Board of Trustees Elects New Members

St. Lawrence University’s Board of Trustees has elected Jeffrey Killeen ’75, Mark Klett ’74, Stephanie Birrell Luedke ’94, Kathleen Welch ’81, and Will Wilson ’88 as new term members. The trustees will serve for a period of six years beginning on June 1.

Students Increase Mental Health Resources On Campus Through Peer Health Network The SLU Peer Health Network promotes wellness campus-wide by combining events, resources, and peer support. An idea formed in a community-based learning class, this student-run initiative will benefit the St. Lawrence community for years to come.

Empowering Students in Global Classrooms: Caroline Fleischauer ’15 Awarded Fulbright to Teach in Thailand Though it was practically predestined, Caroline Fleischauer ’15 didn’t come to St. Lawrence expecting to discover her passion for teaching. Education was always an important value in her family, but Fleischauer was uncertain if it was her calling, too.

Taking Care of Business: Experiential Course Connects Students & Alumni Since its inception in 2014, St. Lawrence’s Business Case Study course has provided students with the tools needed to analyze real-world industry problems while developing thoughtful solutions. The best part? The alumni network and local business owners are there to offer expert insight.

Faculty Focus–July 11, 2022 Faculty members put their knowledge into action so students and others are able to benefit from it. Recently, faculty weighed in on current events as podcast guests, published journal articles with alumni, presented papers at international conferences, and shared their passion for poetry in published works.

First Person: Unearthing My Passion for Architecture At first glance, an art and art history major and a geology minor may not seem like the most obvious combination. For Michael Yirenkyi ’22, they’re a perfect match. In his geology classes, he learned how to ask critical questions. In art and art history, he imagined creative answers. Four years of exploring, creating, and embracing new perspectives lead him to his greatest passion yet–architecture.

The Barista: Making Space for 'Safe Saturdays' and More During their first year on campus, Cheyenne McQuain ’20 and Brady Terry ’20 were inspired to create a substance-free space for students. Today, The Barista, a sober theme house, continues their work by providing games, movies, and lifelong friendships.

May College 2022: Reconnect, Reset, Rekindle After a two-year hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic, over 80 faculty and staff reconnected during May College on May 24 and 25.

Womxn Faculty Take Part in Academic Writing Retreat St. Lawrence University womxn faculty participated in a two-day academic writing retreat on June 16 and 17.

SLU Students Awarded Scholarships for Off-Campus Study in Denmark The Center for International and Intercultural Studies is pleased to congratulate several SLU students who were awarded scholarship funds by DIS to support their off-campus study plans in Copenhagen, Denmark for the fall 2022 semester. DIS Scholarship funds can assist with costs associated with off-campus study including flights, visas, and passports, as well as other on-site opportunities.

Dr. Sue Willson Leads Summer Course in Ecuador Each summer, St. Lawrence University offers a dynamic array of courses taught around the world. Associate Professor of Biology Susan Willson led Laurentians in Ecuador through her Summer 2022 Course where they visited three distinct tropical ecosystems: the high-elevation Andean grasslands, the humid montane cloud forest, and the Galapagos Islands.

Faculty, Staff Receive Awards, Promotions at Annual Convocation St. Lawrence University honored several employees with awards for their outstanding service and recognized a number of faculty who earned tenure and promotions during their annual Convocation event, which was held outside in the Herring-Cole Grove on Wednesday, August 25.

St. Lawrence Faculty Earn Tenure, Receive Promotions St. Lawrence University announced the promotion of several faculty members at the start of the 2021-22 academic year. The promotions were celebrated during the University’s annual Convocation, which was held Wednesday, August 25. All promotions are effective September 1, 2021.

President Morris, Higher Education Leaders Pen Op-Ed in Support of Increased Pell Grant Funding St. Lawrence University President Kathryn A. Morris joined together with two local college presidents and the president of the Commission on Independent Colleges and Universities to pen an opinion piece calling upon the U.S. Congress to support doubling the Pell Grant for qualified students.

St. Lawrence University to Host Virtual Event with Federal Reserve Bank of New York President Sept. 8 As part of a series of meetings to hear about and discuss regional economic issues, the Federal Reserve Bank of New York’s President and CEO, John C. Williams, will give prepared remarks and take part in a moderated discussion at an event hosted by St. Lawrence University on Wednesday, September 8. The event is free and open to students, faculty, and staff at St. Lawrence and area colleges, as well as local business leaders and the general public.

Brush Art Gallery received a 2021 Strategic Planning Assistance award from Documentary Heritage & Preservation Services for New York (DHPSNY) to develop a three-year strategic plan regarding its exhibitions, permanent collection of art objects and cultural artifacts, educational programs and activities, staff training, and facilities.
