NSF Grant Supports St. Lawrence Climate Research
St. Lawrence received three NSF grants this year. A professor and student will use a $78,872 grant to travel—twice—to the Arctic’s Bering Sea Region and study the traditional ecological knowledge of the Siberian Yupik tribe.
New York Six Receives $1.5 Million Mellon Foundation Grant
The New York Six Liberal Arts Consortium, which includes St. Lawrence University, has been awarded a $1.5 million grant by the Mellon Foundation to create the NY6 Mellon Academic Leadership Fellows Program, a three-year program to provide an intensive leadership experience for faculty in the humanities who aspire to academic leadership roles.
The Support and Care of Carefree Black Girls
Sealina Marryshow ’22, president of Carefree Black Girls, wants students to know the club is a welcoming and supportive space for women of color and allies. This spring, they utilized campus resources to help address the mental health needs of their peers.

A Nose for Conservation
As part of a six-week summer research project, Visiting Assistant Professor of Biology Kristine Hoffman, Julia Sirois ’23, and Newt, a labrador trained to detect several species of turtles, are scouring the Rhode Island landscape to find out how many of less common species of turtles are living there. St. Lawrence Celebrates the 50th Anniversary of Title IX
Dotty Hall, an influential coach, administrator, and teacher from 1968 until 2000, was on the vanguard of advancing women’s athletics at St. Lawrence before the enactment of Title IX, the watershed legislation that recognized gender equity in education as a civil right. On the 50th anniversary of Title IX, we’re celebrating Hall and her fellow coaches, athletes, and advocates who blazed the trail for women’s athletics at St. Lawrence.
World Languages Professor Publishes New Book on Ming Dynasty Tales
Professor of World Languages, Cultures, and Media and Coordinator of Asian Studies Zhenjun Zhang recently collaborated with Professor Victor H. Mair of the University of Pennsylvania to publish a book that presents for the first time in English, 10 stories from China’s Ming Dynasty era.

Smooth. Sweet. Soaring. Sorrowful. Ntsieng Botsane ’23 discovered new sensory dimensions of music while exploring New Orleans with her Rhetorical Traditions of the African World class. Throughout their experience, she and her classmates learned about the history of slavery and the influence of Black Americans on the rich music traditions for which the Birthplace of Jazz celebrated.
