Campbell Brothers Kick Off Inaugural Ken Okoth '01 Black American Music Project The Campbell Brothers got the campus swinging last week during a live concert and two master classes with students for an inaugural celebration of the Ken Okoth '01 Black American Music Project.

The Princeton Review Recognizes St. Lawrence for Stellar Student Government, Science Facilities, and Leadership St. Lawrence University was named to The Princeton Review’s “Best 388 Colleges” list for 2023. Based on results from student surveys, the popular rankings publication also recognized several stand-out aspects of co-curricular and academic life.

Supporting Community Care as a United Helpers Intern After spending his first semester of college abroad with St. Lawrence's First-Year Program in London, Blake Bittorf '25 arrived on campus ready to immerse himself in the North Country community.

Inspiring Tomorrow's Climate Leaders as a Wild Center Fellow Elise Pierson '24 discovered her passion for climate justice right in her hometown over six years ago. In the time since, she's attended multiple climate summits across New York State and served as a youth ambassador to the United Nations global climate conference.

Saints Dominate Weekend Competitions This weekend, Saints football dominated Castelton 42-6 while women's ice hockey defeated Providence 5-2 on the road. The wins continued with men's soccer securing a 2-1 win over SUNY Cortland while women's soccer topped Union 1-0 and the field hockey team secured a 4-0 win over Utica. Saints volleyball started their Liberty League Campaign with a 3-1 win over Union while Saints men's track and field won their home Ronald C. Hoffmann Invitational. Celebrating United World Colleges Day Last week members of the St. Lawrence community came together in celebration of United World Colleges (UWC) Day. The annual global event highlights the strength and diversity of the UWC movement and its mission for a more peaceful and sustainable future and coincides with the United Nations’ International Day of Peace. St. Lawrence UWC scholars spent the evening attending events that speak to this year’s theme of “Peace Begins With Us” and reflected on what being effective changemakers looks like. Photo credit: Nancy Glennon ’23. COVID-19 Update: Campus Operating Status, Campus Arrival, and Spring 2022 Semester Academic Affairs and Student Life sent a message to the community on Monday, January 10, announcing the campus operating status is now Yellow-A (moderate risk), and sharing updates on campus arrivals, in-person classes, testing plans for the semester, booster shot requirement information, and a reminder of the University’s masking policy. In Memory President Morris shared messages with the community about three retired Laurentians who recently passed away: Joan Larsen, Donald Auster, and Sharon Ober.

What’s at Stake: Alumni, Faculty Publish Research on Climate Change and Winter Sports in the North Country Winter in the North Country is synonymous with outdoor activities like pond hockey and cross country skiing. In a collaborative research article recently published in The Adirondack Journal of Environmental Studies, two faculty members and three St. Lawrence alumni explore how carbon emissions and climate change could affect these cold-weather traditions.

St. Lawrence in the News - Jan. 10, 2022 Faculty members and their research were featured in regional and national media as expert sources for better sleep tips and for using their expertise to weigh in on current events, student mental health, and astronomical events.

Richard F. Brush Art Gallery to Present Exhibitions The St. Lawrence University Richard F. Brush Art Gallery will present two exhibitions showcasing artwork beginning Wednesday, Jan. 19, through Saturday, Feb. 26.

Women's Basketball Continues Unbeaten Streak In a battle of the last two teams undefeated in Liberty League conference play, Saints Women's Basketball defeated Vassar 99-81 on the road on Saturday to improve to 10-0. Five Alumni to Receive 2022 Awards from Alumni Executive Council St. Lawrence University’s Alumni Executive Council has announced that Dr. William A. Van Wie '67, Barbarajean "BJ" Schaefer Blodgett '72, Jeffrey P. Spafford '88, and Dr. Wambui Mutoru '06 will receive Alumni Citations for their dedication and service to the Laurentian Community, while Dr. Edward “Ted” F. Higgins '71 will receive the Sol Feinstone Award for Humanitarian Service.

Lost and Found: A&AH Senior Year Exhibition Fri, Apr 29 - All day Richard F. Brush Art Gallery Celebrate members of the Class of 2022 during the final week of the "Lost and Found" is a Senior Year Experience exhibition. This collection of artwork focuses on self-discovery and self-reflection and that was created at the edge of the precipice before true adulthood and a transitory state that can be simultaneously confusing, frightening, and exciting.

Spring Student Recital Fri, Apr 29 at 4:30pm - 1 hour Peterson-Kermani Performance Hall Students who have been studying privately this semester will be performing solos or in small ensembles.  The Recital will feature students in voice, violin, and clarinet.

Spring Dance Concert Fri, Apr 29 at 8pm - 1 hour Gulick Theatre, Noble Center Join University Theatre for the Spring Dance Concert featuring work choreographed by Faculty, Students, and the SLU Dance Ensemble. Tickets and masks are required for this free, in person event.

Rural Feminism Exhibit Sun, May 1 at 1pm - 2 hours Traditional Arts in Upstate New York Center St. Lawrence students will present their year-long public history project exploring feminism in the North Country during the 1970s and 1980s as part of a photo-narrative exhibit at the Traditional Arts in Upstate New York Center.

Saints Secure First Place Finishes; Spring Sports Continue The Saints track and field teams secured several first-place wins at the Cortland Classic over the weekend. Lambert ’22 won the decathlon while Mike Skutt ’24 won the 10k to lead the men’s track and field team and Oliva Watson ’23 won the 5k while Olivia Bernier ’24 won the 10k to lead the women’s team. The wins continued with Saints Softball defeating RIT 6-4 on the road after dominating SUNY Potsdam 10-2 and 7-3 while baseball secured a 13-6 win over Clarkson in a Route 11matchup. Men’s lacrosse defeated RPI 11-7 after beating Clarkson 17-6 while women’s lacrosse dominated Vassar 16-8 after topping Clarkson 18-16. Saints Football’s Kyle Frimel ’22 was selected as a National Football Foundation Scholar-Athlete and several members of the football team were named to the NFF Hampshire Honor Society, recognizing student-athlete academic excellence. Scarlet, Brown, and Green for Sustainability Last weekend St. Lawrence hosted the North Country Sustainability Day and Green Living Fair in collaboration with The Associated Colleges of the St. Lawrence Valley, Paul Smith’s College, Cornell Cooperative Extension of St. Lawrence County, the municipalities of Canton and Potsdam, and the Local Living Venture. The event, which aimed to inspire and empower attendees to fostering a culture of sustainability across the North Country and beyond, combined gallery exhibits with discussions and welcomed author of  the book"Braiding Sweetgrass" Robin Wall-Kimmerer as the keynote speaker.  View photos from the event on the St. Lawrence Instagram account.

St. Lawrence Announces $500,000 Gift to Fund the Ken Okoth Black American Music Project Thanks to the generosity of an anonymous donor, St. Lawrence will honor the life and impact of a beloved Laurentian with the Ken Okoth ’01 Black American Music Project, which celebrates Black music history through visual displays, lectures, seminars, and live performances.

Laurentian Makes a Sweet Donation After learning about the Chocolate Passport Project, Priscilla (Penny) Wightman ’74 was inspired to donate three boxes of books and resources about chocolate and sustainability to the St. Lawrence University Libraries.

Athletics

Saints Dominate in Florida; Conclude Winter Seasons Several Saints are dominating the competition in on-the-road matchups in Florida. Women’s tennis defeated Coe College 6-3 as softball beat Macalester 1-0 and New Paltz 8-3, and baseball swept Colby-Sawyer 2-1 and 8-3. Women’s lacrosse is on a winning streak after defeating Oswego 18-7 at home and Saint Michael’s 13-6 on the road while men’s lacrosse dominated SUNY Geneseo 20-6 and Nazareth 16-7. Timmy Boyce ’25 set a programmatic indoor record in the 800m at the NCAA DIII Track and Field Championships and the Women’s Hockey Commissioners Association announced that Lucy Morgan ’23 is a finalist for the Women’s Hockey Goalie of the Year Award. The Liberty League named squash players Lewis Anderson '25 Performer of the Year and Anannya Morey '25 Co-Rookie of the Year while tapping several squash players for the All-Liberty League Team and naming Scott Denne and Jamie Oakley Coaching Staff of the Year. The Skating Saints concluded its season after falling to Quinnipiac in the ECAC Quarterfinals while Alpine skiing’s Ava Mattson ’22 and Nordic skiing’s Brian Beyerbach '23 and Emma Strack '25 wrapped up their seasons at the NCAA Championships in Utah. Peterson '24, Team USA Win Gold in Mixed Relay Race Sydney Peterson '24 and Team U.S.A. won its first-ever mixed relay gold medal to close out the cross-country competition at the Paralympic Winter Games Beijing 2022. This is the third Paralympic medal for Sydney, who claimed bronze in women's free technique standing and silver in women's long-distance classical technique during her Paralympic Winter Games debut. Students Visit Alumnus at Embassy of Latvia in London St. Lawrence students participating in the London study abroad program visited the Embassy of Latvia to meet Artūrs Saburovs '10, who is currently serving on the diplomatic staff as Third Secretary responsible for Communications and Diaspora Affairs.

Students Present at Northeast Central Meeting of the Geologic Society of America Geology majors Eli Idec, Dan Schuckers, and Banner Cole recently presented their research projects at the Northeast Central meeting of the Geologic Society of America in Lancaster, PA.

Student Earns "Best Speaker" Award Eduardo Puerta ’22 was awarded a “best speaker” prize for his presentation on his research exploring connections between knot theory and linear algebra at the Mathematics Contest and Competition of Northern New York (MCCNNY) on March 26.

Geology Dept. Replicates Volcanic Explosion Even in the colder months, the Geology Department does not shy away from some hands-on, outdoor activities to illustrate geologic concepts. For her class "Natural Disaster and Climate Change," Dr. Sarah Brehm organized a real-time volcano explosion behind Brown Hall.

SLU Writers Series Presents Viebranz Anniversary Reading with Robin Hemley Thu, Apr 7 at 8pm - 1 hour 30 minutes Peterson-Kermani Performance Hall The St. Lawrence Writers Series welcomes Robin Hemley, the inaugural Viebranz Visiting Professor of Creative Writing. Registration is required for this in-person event.

Track and Field Teams Secure Ice Broken Open Titles; Spring Sports Continue The Saints track and field teams are continuing a winning streak after securing team titles at Ice Broken Open on Saturday. The women's team won 12 events and the men's team won 9 events during the home meet against Castleton, Clarkson, Herkimer, NVU-Johnson, Plattsburgh, and Potsdam. The weekend wins continued with the men’s and women’s tennis teams each dominating Bard 9-0 while men’s lacrosse defeated Ithaca 14-10 and women’s lacrosse beat Bard 20-8. Baseball defeated Ithaca 6-2 after beating SUNY Poly 2-0 last week while Esports advanced to the Elite 8 in the Teemo Cup after securing a 2-0 win over Milligan University. After winning its 11th-straight Regional Championship,  four members of Saints riding will advance to Zones on April 9. Eleven skiers from the Alpine and Nordic ski teams were honored by the United States Collegiate Ski Coaches Association (USCSCA) for having earned National Collegiate All-Academic Ski Team honors for the 2022 season while six members of the men's and women's track and field teams earned all-region honors for the indoor season, as announced by the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association. For up-to-date schedules, news, and scores visit SaintsAthletics.com.
