Saints are Ramping Up!

With playoff positioning on the line, the women’s hockey team delivered, winning two games against highly ranked opponents. First, they beat No. 6 Cornell 2-1, then followed it up by winning against No. 3 Colgate in overtime. The home game victories put the Saints in the driver’s seat as they now attempt to secure a first-round bye Friday against Princeton.

The women’s basketball team won on a buzzer-beating lay-up at RIT, then followed it up with a victory at William Smith to cement themselves into fourth place overall in the Liberty League standings. 

Men’s and women’s squash both had victories at home in their senior day games – they beat Hamilton to finish their regular seasons ranked 24th and 25th in the College Squash Association.

The United States Track & Field and Cross-Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) announced their all-academic athletes and teams from the 2023 cross country season. Charlotte Blake ’27, Emma Palumbo ’25, Matthew Serrano ’26 and Alli Sibold ’24 were named all-academic athletes, while both the men’s and women’s teams were named all-academic teams. 

A Glimpse of Black History Month!

In Honor of Black History Month, we're celebrating Black Laurentians who have made a difference and left their mark on St. Lawrence.

Rev. Jeffrey Worthington Campbell was the first African-American graduate of St. Lawrence in 1933 and the first Black Laurentian to be ordained as a Universalist minister bt the St. Lawrence School of Theology.

Trustee Sharee Freeman '76 is an alumni mentor and passionate civil rights activist who dedicated much of her distinguished career as a public servant to the indigenous people of the United States.

Brian Uceta '23 was named the Joan Donovan Speech Contest winner for 2023. Uceta is a first-generation student, proud HEOP alum, actor, and member of the ESports team. After graduation he returned to New York City to begin teaching theater at a school in the Bronx.

Saints Back in Action

The athletic season is ramping up for the Scarlet and Brown! Women’s soccer started off strong with a 2-1 win over DeSales. An impressive race by both the men's and women’s cross country team resulted in both teams bringing home first place in their season-opening events. The women’s field hockey team defeated Oneonta taking a 3-2 lead in the first half, bringing home the win for the Saints! Women’s Tennis duo, Angelica Aksdal-Jansen and Molly Jespersen, claimed the A Flight Doubles while Ariane Karera won the B Flight Singles Final to highlight the team at the Mary Hosking Invitational. Saints Show Out at Invitationals 

Men’s Cross Country: Senior Nick Lyndaker won the Hoffmann Invitational for the first time, pulling away in the final 400 meters to finish in 25:14.8—five seconds ahead of the runner-up. After placing third in 2023, this marked his best result at the meet and helped SLU take third in the team standings. He was named Liberty League Performer of the Week.

Volleyball: The volleyball team earned two 3-1 wins over VTSU Castleton and SUNY Potsdam at the SLU Triad, playing in front of large Laurentian Weekend crowds.

Women’s Golf: Sophomore Sadie Cumming led SLU at the Union Invitational, finishing second with a two-round score of 158. She shot 81 on Saturday and improved to 77 Sunday, while all five Saints lowered their scores in the final round.

Women’s Cross Country: St. Lawrence placed third at the 33^rd annual Ronald C. Hoffmann Invitational, kicking off a busy home season with a strong team showing on familiar campus trails during Laurentian Weekend.

Men’s Tennis: Sophomores Sebastían Boada and Ryan Tingley won the B doubles title at the Garnet Charger Invitational. They beat Christian Chowder and Daniel Saxe 8-6 to reach the final, where they topped teammates senior Aidan Baracao and first-year Bennett Stout 8-5 in an all-SLU championship match.

Women’s Hockey: Junior Kassidy Lawrence made 48 saves and first-year Rylan Haslam scored the lone goal to lift SLU to a 1-0 exhibition win over No. 5 Colgate on Friday in Hamilton.

Laurentian Weekend Was a Movie 🍿🎥

This weekend, more than 1,500 alumni reveled in all Laurentian Weekend had to offer. From musical performances to morning yoga, to athletic contests and even a custom drone show, campus buzzed with joy and nostalgia all weekend long as St. Lawrence welcomed everyone back to their forever home. On November 1, President Morris sent a message to the Laurentian community about the passing of Frederick "Fred" Wright, Jr. who displayed a quiet heroism in his everyday life and worked at St. Lawrence for 23 years. Read the message. 

Saints Shatter Records and Secure Wins 

Men’s Cross-Country: Junior Nick Lyndaker broke a 13-year-old course record as he ran for a time of 24:35.3 on Saturday and earned an individual championship for men’s cross country. As a team, the Saints finished second overall. Lyndaker's record is the fastest since Lee Berube of SUNY Geneseo ran a 24:39.4 in 2011, breaking a 13-year-old record. His individual championship is the first by a St. Lawrence runner since Joseph Smith in 2019. Lyndaker also set the fastest winning eight-kilometer time in Liberty League history. He earned all-Liberty League first-team honors with the win.  

Women’s Cross-Country: First-years Avery Blanchard and Charlotte Blake were both awarded all-Liberty League second team honors for their performances in the women’s six-kilometer race. 

Riding: The riding team resumed their winning ways for the second weekend of the season with a win at SUNY Geneseo on Saturday as well as a home-win Sunday at Elsa Gunnison Appleton Riding Hall. On Saturday, the Scarlet and Brown claimed their third win of the season at the final SUNY Geneseo show, as junior Annie Kammer was named the High Point Rider and the Saints recorded six class wins. Senior Sydney Curley took second place in Novice Equitation. On Sunday, the Saints recorded their fourth win as the High Point Team with 47 points besting the reserve team's 42 points. 

Men’s Soccer: Sophomore striker Henry Brown scored his 11th goal of the season, and the Saints got an own-goal to go their way late as the men's soccer team extended their unbeaten streak to 14 games in a 2-2 tie with Hobart Saturday. St. Lawrence moved to 8-2-6 on the year with the draw and finished the regular season unbeaten in Liberty league play with a 5-0-4 record and 19 points. Despite this, the Saints will settle for second place in the regular season standings after Vassar earned their 20th league point with their win over RIT. The Saints now host the winner of Skidmore and Ithaca in the conference semifinals, with the winner heading to the Liberty League championship game. 

Women’s Swimming: The St. Lawrence women's swimming and diving team recorded their first win of the season Friday, taking a 160-127 victory on the back of a big performance from sophomore Amelia Stacy. Stacy won four races on the day, taking first in every event she appeared in over the course of the dual meet. She took first place in the 200 Fly with a time of 2:21.59, the 100 Fly with a time of 1:05.01, the 200 IM touching the wall in 2:19.27, and, as a member of the 200 medley relay, the Saints took first place in that event as well.

Make a Difference Day

Over 400 Saints stepped up on Make a Difference Day, spreading out across seven North Country towns to volunteer with 23 local homes and 18 community partners. From raking leaves to lending a hand wherever needed, our students showed what it means to support our community. Thank you to everyone who made this day a success! “Digital Storytelling for the Environment” Grant Awarded

The Digital Scholarship team at St. Lawrence University has been awarded a $12K grant from the Northern New York Library Network (NNLYN) to leverage digital storytelling tools and techniques to help students and faculty construct powerful environmental narratives with real-world impacts. The grant supports the purchase of professional production equipment intended for outdoor use, such as light-shaping tools, field-recording microphones, and macro lenses, as well as the creation of new training workshops and related web resources on the fundamentals of environmental storytelling. 

• Women’s Hockey—On the heels of two wins over No. 15 Mercyhurst, graduate student Anna Segedi was named the ECAC Hockey Forward of the Week, presented by Bluebird Hotels, while junior goaltender Emma-Sofie Nordström was awarded MAC Goaltending Goalie of the Week honors. Segedi tallied a goal and an assist, and her goal on Saturday was the game-winner and her 100th career point in Scarlet and Brown. Nordström completed the weekend sweep in goal for the Saints, including a shutout 3-0 win on Friday, as she made 45 saves on the weekend.
• Rowing—A pair of Saints’ first-place finishes highlighted the weekend at the Head of the Geneseo for the men’s and women’s rowing teams, with the men’s Novice 8 cruising to first with a time of 19:47.300. The women's Novice 8 coxed by first-year Eden Keeney took first place, besting St. John Fisher, with a time of 21:48.932.
• Men’s Golf—Senior Ben Scholes shot one under par and claimed the individual title, leading men’s golf to a first-place finish at the Skidmore Fall Invitational at the Saratoga Spa State Park Golf Course this weekend. Scholes shot a 71 at the par-72 course to come away with the individual title.
• Men’s Hockey—Senior captain Mason Waite scored with 12.6 seconds in regulation and senior Tomáš Mazura put on the finishing touches scoring in overtime to lift men’s hockey to a 4-3 win over Niagara on Friday night, leading the Saints to a split of their weekend. They are now 3-1-0 on the season.
• Men’s Soccer—Sophomore Baker Diaz scored his second goal in as many games to send men's soccer to a 1-0 win over RIT Saturday. Diaz earned Liberty League Defensive Performer of the Week as a result of his outing. St. Lawrence improved to 5-2-3 overall and 2-0-2 in Liberty League play.
• Men’s Cross Country—First-year Kyle Gaffney was men’s cross country’s Liberty League rookie of the week, after performing as the top-performing first-year for St. Lawrence at their dual meet against Clarkson. Sophomore Henry Hagen took first in the event for the Scarlet and Brown.

Saints Earn Accolades and Secure Shutout Wins

Men’s Cross Country—Junior Nick Lyndaker was named USTFCCCA National Athlete of the Week and Liberty League Performer of the Week following running to a first-place finish at the Hamilton Short Course Invitational. He had a personal best time in the 5k run, winning the race by 21 seconds.

Football—The Saints took home the Hoffman Cup with a victory over Norwich Friday, bringing the Cup back to the North Country by a 20-9 final score. The win marked the fourth-straight Hoffman Cup win for the Saints and improved their record to 1-1 for the season.

Women’s Soccer—Darcie McDonough was named Liberty League Co-Defensive Performer of the Week after leading the Saints to a 2-0 record. The senior netminder stopped two shots in a 1-0 victory at SUNY Geneseo on Wednesday, then on Saturday did the same, stopping both shots she faced in a 4-0 win over Oswego State.

Women’s Cross Country—First-year Avery Blanchard was named Liberty League Rookie of the Week for her performance at Hamilton, running for a time of 14:59 and a fifth-place finish in the 4k race. 

Women’s Hockey—Senior forward and alternate captain Abby Hustler was named a Preseason All-ECAC Hockey selection, as announced by the league office on Monday morning. Hustler led the Scarlet and Brown with 24 goals and 31 assists for 55 points on the season. She tallied 12 power-play goals and five game-winners.

Here We Go, Saints Challenge Success

Thanks to the generosity of the Laurentian community,  Saints Athletics more than doubled its goal of 1,000 donors and together with the Laurentian community, raised over $550,000 in support of St. Lawrence student-athletes. 

Top Flights for the Saints, Fall Sports Continue

Saints men's and women's tennis teams dominated the competition this weekend. The tandem of Catherine Gamble '23 and Molly Jespersen '23 won the flight A Championship over Union at the St. Lawrence Invitational while Edvin Strandberg '25 came away with the B flight, and Broderick Pinto '25 won the C flight over Union to lead the men's tennis team at the Dutchmen Invitational. The wins continued with Saints women's rowing opening its season with a first-place win over Mount Holyoke while first-year Matthew Serrano won the Kangaroo Invitational 8k to lead the men's cross country team to the title. Saints Secure Wins to Kick Off the Fall Season

Saints Men’s Golf secured its first win of the season with a combined score of 602 at the Oliver D. Appleton Golf Course, marking the first victory for first-year Head Coach Dave Clausen at St. Lawrence. Gabe Ward ’27 finished as the tournament runner-up with a combined score of 147, earning him the Saints Athlete of the Week honors. Mary Grace McCann ’25 led the women’s golf team to a fourth-place finish at the St. Lawrence Invitational, placing third individually with a combined score of 157 (77, 80). Sadie Cumming ’28 also performed well, finishing 11th with a score of 169 (84, 85) in her collegiate debut. The winning streak for the Scarlet and Brown continued as Nick Lyndaker '26 secured a first-place finish at the Plattsburgh 5K, with a time of 16:11.4, propelling the Saints Men’s Cross Country team to the top of the leaderboard. Avery Blanchard ’28 led the women’s cross country team to a first-place finish with a time of 19:28.0 while Charlotte Blake ’27 and Adriana Cecchetelli ’26 followed closely, finishing in second (19:50.8) and third (20:02.1), respectively.  At the Mary Hosking Invitational, Molly Jespersen ’26 advanced to the A draw final for Saints Women’s Tennis. She defeated RIT 8-6 in the semifinal match before falling to the University of Rochester.  Saints Field Hockey will celebrate its 50th anniversary with alumni and friends during the home opener on Saturday, September 7, at 7 p.m. against SUNY Oswego.

Campus is buzzing with excitement and vibrant with scarlet and brown. From pre-orientation trips, move-in, and matriculation, to the FYP Cup, the Adirondack dinner, and the first day of classes, the Fall 2024 semester is officially underway at St. Lawrence. Saints Fall Sports Continue
Several varsity teams continued their fall seasons this weekend. In their first home game, Football defeated Norwich 37-7 in the Hoffman Cup contest on Saturday at Leckonby Stadium. The weekend wins continued with field hockey defeating Lebanon Valley and Manhattanville at the William Smith Tournament. Volleyball emerged from a 4-0 weekend celebrating wins against SUNY Canton, SUNY Oneonta, SUNY Oswego, and SUNY Plattsburgh at the North Country Classic. Men's Tennis hosted the St. Lawrence University Fall Classic while Women's Golf hit the links at the Hamilton College Invitational on Sunday. Both the men's and women's cross country teams participated in the Hamilton College Short Course Invitational while the men's and women's soccer teams competed against Nazareth College and SUNY Oneonta.

St. Lawrence Athletics shared their commitment to adhering to CDC, St. Lawrence County, NCAA SSI, and St. Lawrence University COVID-19 recommendations and protocols. On Saturday, we honored all Sept. 11 victims and their families, especially Laurentians Robert J. “Bobby” Coll ’88, Catherine Gorayeb ’82, Christopher Morrison ’89, Michel A. “Mike” Pelletier ’88, and Richard H. “Richie” Stewart Jr. ’89. In addition to the hundreds of American flags displayed on the Brush Quad, this year’s campus flag installation also included flags from the more than 90 countries that also lost people 20 years ago. Thank you to the SLU Democrats and International House coordinators for organizing the tribute and to the many students, faculty, and staff who played a role in making it happen again this year. Saints Shine: Athletes Excel Across Sports!

Women's hockey qualified for the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) tournament via an at-large bid after making the ECAC tournament and playing in the semifinal game against Clarkson. The Scarlet and Brown is matched up against Pennsylvania State in its first game of the tournament scheduled for Thursday in Madison, Wisconsin. If the Saints win, the team will face off against Wisconsin.

The Saints women's hockey players were also recognized both nationally and at the conference level. Mae Batherson M'25, Emma-Sofie Nordström '26 and head coach Chris Wells were named finalists for the ECAC Defenseman of the Year, Goaltender of the Year, and Coach of the Year awards, respectively, while junior forward Abby Hustler '26 was named a top-10 finalist for the Patty Kazmaier Award, as announced by the USA Hockey Foundation. The Patty Kazmaier Award is bestowed annually to the top player in NCAA Division I women's ice hockey.

Alli Sibold '24 became the national runner-up in the mile at the NCAA indoor track and field championships in Virginia Beach, Virginia over the weekend. She set a new program record after turning in a time of 4:50.97 to eclipse the personal-best and program record marks she set earlier this season. The win also gave her All-America honors in the mile event. Earlier in the week, Alli took home US Track Field and Cross Country Coaches' Association (USTFCCCA) regional track athlete of the year award, receiving all-region honors for the 3000m, mile and 800m. Nick Lyndaker '26 also received men's USTFCCCA all-region honors in the mile.

Lewis Anderson '25 tied a St. Lawrence record for program wins at the College Squash Association (CSA) Individual Nationals in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania over the weekend. With the win, the junior from Birmingham, U.K. reached 62 for his career, tying him for the program record alongside Moustafa Bayoumy '18.

Emma Strack '25 competed for the Saints at the NCAA skiing championships, posting a 16th-place finish in the 7.5k freestyle followed by a posting a top-20 finish in the 20k classic by finishing 19th.

The Green House is one of 17 total theme houses on campus! If you’re lucky enough to sit down to one of their delicious home-cooked dinners, you’ll taste local ingredients from across the North Country, thoughtfully prepared by the resident “Green Beans” with sustainability in mind.  
 
In addition to nourishing our community, members of the Green House host workshops and events for the campus community and volunteer with nearby Birdsfoot Farm.
