Kayaking for ~Summer Research~ 🛶 🌱

Research isn’t always done in a lab. For University Fellow Peyton Robbins ’26, it’s done in a kayak. He’s working with Professor of Biology Brad Baldwin this summer to explore how invasive water chestnuts affect North Country ecosystems. The work may be serious, but the commentary? Not so much. Student Research Investigates Ways to Save Lives 

Alice Khalil ’27, a neuroscience major and chemistry minor from Baniyas, Syria, spent her summer working on a faster, more sensitive way to detect heart attacks in their earliest stages. In the lab with Professor of Chemistry Samantha Glazier, she conducted research aimed at detecting even the smallest traces of troponin more accurately and earlier than current methods allow.

Saints Earn ECAC Accolades and Net Wins

Women’s Hockey: Senior captain Abby Hustler was named the ECAC Hockey Forward of the Week, presented by Bluebird Hotels, the league office announced Tuesday morning. Hustler notched a goal and three assists, as the team recorded a sweep over Harvard and Dartmouth at Appleton Arena over the weekend. Hustler leads the Saints with six goals and 16 assists for 22 points this season. Hustler's 22 points ties for eighth in the ECAC. 

Men’s Hockey: Sophomore Mason Kucenski was named MAC Goaltending Goalie of the Week for the third time this season, as announced by the ECAC league office on Monday morning. Kucenski started both games this past weekend for the Saints going 1-0-1 and playing 125 minutes between the pipes. The netminder stopped 29 shots in the Scarlet and Brown's 3-2 win over No. 13/14 Dartmouth on Friday and made 26 in a shutout against Harvard on Saturday to complete his weekend. 

Men’s Squash: First-year Grégory Malsang took Rookie of the Week honors at the conference level after earning his first career win this past Sunday against the University of Rochester. At number two, Malsang faced Rochester’s Omar Zakaria and, following a nail-biting 11-9 win, Malsang won the second game 11-2 to take a commanding lead. The newcomer closed the set with an 11-6 result to pick up the victory. 

Track and Field: Both men’s and women’s track and field had first place finishes on home turf this weekend. They competed in the Saints Holiday Relays and finished at the top of the team score table in the competition that featured six other schools. First-years Isla Bougard Duncan and Erik Marelli each set personal records as they opened their collegiate careers on a high note–and Marelli won the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.98. Sophomore Quinn Sirgany also took first place in the women’s mile run.

Celebrating 19 Years of Kaleidoscope! 🎉

Last week, the St. Lawrence community came together to celebrate 19 years of Kaleidoscope! Started in 2006 by Victor Kai-Rogers '08 from Freetown, Sierra Leone, the annual tradition celebrates the many cultures represented in our community through performance and art. Hosted by the I-House and International Student Services, the event wrapped up World Languages Week with an exciting showcase of global music, dance, fashion, and food. 

A heartfelt thank you to all who made this celebration possible, but especially to those who took the stage to share their customs and traditions with us. ❤️🤎

Saints Reach Milestones and Sweep Opponents

• Men’s Lacrosse: Head coach Mike Mahoney captured his 300^th career victory by downing Vassar 10-5 over the weekend. The Saints are now on a three-game winning streak.
• Softball: The Saints picked up a 10-0 win in game two of the doubleheader with Clarkson on Friday. Sophomore Maeve Thompson led the charge for both games, recording four hits on five at-bats and three RBIs on the day. They split the DH and are 8-6 in the season. 
• Baseball: The Saints took down Rochester in both games of a doubleheader on Saturday. The Saints took game one 2-1 and game two 6-1. Graduate student Brett Federico, sophomore Matt Davis, and junior John Gannon led the way on offense. Sophomores David Zuhlsdorf and Boden Driscoll gave SLU 14 solid innings on the mound.
• Women’s Tennis: The Saints swept the weekend, taking down RIT 6-1 and Ithaca 5-2. Junior Angelica Aksdal-Jansen and first-year Elisa Luri led the way as they went undefeated in all their matches in both singles and doubles.
• Men’s Track and Field: Junior Nick Lyndaker picked up a pair of major end-of-season awards. He was named the USTFCCCA Mideast Region Runner of the Year and the Liberty League Indoor Track Athlete of the Year. At Hamilton this week, first-year Trystan Biller highlighted the men’s team with a win in the 400-meter hurdles and a second-place finish in the 110-meter hurdles. Senior Jack Simack won the javelin.  
• Women’s Track and Field: Sophomore Quinn Sirgany headlined the Saints’ trip to Hamilton, placing first in the 1500-meter run. Junior Amelia Berthold broke two personal records, placing second in the 100-meter hurdles and fourth in the 400-meter hurdles.

On Friday, February 3, President Morris sent a message to the community about the passing of  former St. Lawrence University President Walter Lawrence (Lawry) Gulick, GP’13 who sought and laid the groundwork for a more inclusive and diverse Laurentian community—served by the rigorous liberal arts education he championed. Saints Basketball Dominates Home Court Matchups; Seasons Continue

It was a winning weekend for the Saints! Women's basketball secured a 68-57 win over RIT on Saturday after defeating William Smith 82-59 on Friday and dominating Clarkson 74-47 at home last week while Saints men's basketball beat RIT 88-71 on Saturday after securing a 73-67 win over Hobart on Friday.  The wins for the Scarlet and Brown continued with men's hockey shutting out Brown 6-0 on the road while women's hockey skated to a 3-2 overtime win over Cornell at home. Saints squash wrapped up its 2023 Liberty League Championships on home court this weekend after the women's team secured three sets of 8-0 wins over Vassar, Bard, and Denison before falling to William Smith in the championship match on Sunday while the men's team topped Bard 8-1 and Hobart 5-4  before falling to Rochester on Sunday. For up-to-date schedules, news, and scores visit SaintsAthletics.com.

Celebrating Lunar New Year

The International House (I-House) and Asian Students Intercultural Association (A.S.I.A) celebrated Lunar New Year with a teatime spent sharing dumplings and laughs, crafting origami rabbits, and enjoying music with friends to ring in a prosperous year ahead. The Class of 2024’s Commencement was an extra special occasion—for many, it was their first “real” graduation after their high school ceremony was cancelled due to the global pandemic.

You've left your mark on our campus with your creativity, resilience, and profound care for one another. You've built a community of scholars, athletes, artists, and activists that will continue to support and inspire you for the rest of your life. It's been an honor to watch you grow and it’s an honor to celebrate your commencement.

Saints Varsity 8 Wins Great ADK Boat Race 

Saints men's rowing continued its undefeated season as the Varsity 8 topped Union at the Great Adirondack Boat Race on Sunday at Long Lake. The weekend wins for the Scarlet and Brown continued at the CNY Fast Chance in Utica where Hayley Castagnier'23 ran a career-best and won the 100-meter dash to lead the women's track and field team while Erik Geier '23 and William Hauf  '25 of the men's team had career-best performances. Unlimited Support for Conservation 

The Ducks Unlimited Chapter at St. Lawrence recently hosted its Spring Sportsman’s Night Out Banquet. Together with students, alumni, local community members, and remote sponsors, the fundraising event raised nearly $19,000 toward direct wetland conservation. Saint to Saint Women's Summit! ❤️🤎

We’re still feeling inspired as we reflect on the Saint to Saint Women's Summit presented by our Center for Career Excellence and University Advancement. The summit brought together 31 students with alumnae and parents representing a range of professional paths for a day focused on leadership, empowerment, and navigating professional and personal journeys.

Keynote speaker and leadership development consultant Kathryn Mayer '82 shared insights from her forthcoming book “The Productive Perfectionist: A Woman’s Guide to Smashing the Shackles of Perfectionism.” Small business owner and doctor of chiropractic Lisa Francey Towle '92 spoke to the group on the importance of wellbeing and self-care. The program also included lots of opportunities for students to network with our amazing alumnae and parents.

Special thanks to Mary Pat Suits '83 and Dan Suits '83 who generously funded the Summit.

On Monday, our celebration of women continued with presentations by Laurentian-in-Residence Dr. Allison Hill-Edgar P’25. A visual artist and MD, she began her visit with a lecture on menopause in Leah Rohlfsen’s Women’s Health and Aging class, shared dinner and conversation with a small group of students, and delivered a campus-wide lecture to a highly engaged crowd, “Dissecting Gender in Medicine: Reassessing Anatomical Representations of the Female Body.”

On May 16, President Morris informed the Laurentian community about the passing of Melinda Goss, a former assistant manager of the Brewer Bookstore. Known for her wide-ranging knowledge and thoughtful recommendations, Goss brought a genuine passion for books to her work and was a helpful, collegial presence to both staff and customers. On May 19, President Morris informed the Laurentian community about the passing of Joyce Hogle, who worked for 32 years in Dining and Catering. Remembered by colleagues as steady, capable, and skilled at her craft, she was known for her baked goods and for supporting the day-to-day operations that kept our community running smoothly. Academic Affairs and Student Life sent a campus health message to the community on Friday, Dec. 10, sharing a campus health update on recent test results and clinic information. Read the message. 

Prepare for the Unexpected: Stormy Skies, Claustrophobia, and the Art of Pinhole Cameras

Using cardboard boxes, tape, and aluminum foil, students built cameras to create small aperture to allow for exposure of chemically treated paper housed in the chamber of the box. Their unique results included a 32-pinhole lens camera used to make self-portraits; a 360-view multi-lens camera, and a floss container repurposed as a pinhole camera held in the student’s mouth during the exposure.

Saints Basketball Teams Top Clarkson; Winter Sports Return Dec. 29

Women's Basketball ended the semester undefeated after dominating Clarkson, 62-38, to improve to 8-0 on the season, while Men's Basketball improved to 6-1 with a 65-59 win over the Golden Knights. Saints Athletics will continue their winter schedules on Wednesday, December 29, with Men's Hockey facing off against UMass Lowell at Appleton Arena.
