Peterson '24 Secures Bronze at 2023 Para Nordic World Championships; Skating Saints Sweep Route 11 Rival

It was a great weekend to be a Saint! During the 2023 Para Nordic World Championships Saints Nordic skier Sydney Peterson ’24 secured two bronze medals in the women’s standing 10km and the standing sprint. This marks the second high-stakes competition appearance for Sydney who secured bronze, silver, and gold medals at the 2022 Beijing Paralympic Games. Over the weekend, the Skating Saints dominated Clarkson University in back-to-back matchups with a 4-2 win over the Knights at Cheel Arena on Saturday and a 4-2 home ice win on Friday as women's ice hockey defeated Brown 6-1 on the road. The wins for the Scarlet and Brown continued with men's basketball beating Bard 60-55 after defeating Vassar 57-49 while women's basketball beat Bard 79-34, and men's squash defeated Colby 6-3. Saints women's swimming and diving team dominated Utica 194-60 while the men's team beat Utica 95-71 in their final meet before the Liberty League Championships. The women's track and field team won eight events to defend its Saints Indoor Invitational while Zachary Jaworski '25 won both throwing events, and Nick Lyndaker '26 won the 800 meters and the mile to lead the men's team. For up-to-date schedules, news, and scores visit SaintsAthletics.com.

Honoring Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

Students and community members recently gathered in Gunnison Memorial Chapel to celebrate Dr. King’s legacy during the annual Martin Luther King Jr. service. Leading with the theme, “It starts with me—the call to transform,” Rev. Dr. Shaun Whitehead was joined by President Kate Morris, University choirs, and members of the Black Laurentian Initiative, as they took the stage through spiritual songs, words of reflection, and moving performances. Trio of Wins

St. Lawrence University athletics had a strong week with wins in men's basketball, football, and men's hockey. On Wednesday, the men's basketball team started their season with an impressive 87-53 victory over SUNY Potsdam on the road. On Saturday, the football team traveled to Buffalo State and earned a 30-7 win. Also on Saturday, the men's hockey team hosted RPI and overcame an early 3-0 deficit to rally for a 6-3 win at home.

We’d like to highlight a new collection featured in ODY Library containing photographs, letters, and other objects gathered by former university registrar and World War II Communications Officer Helen “Tommie” Whalen. In this role, Tommie corresponded on behalf of the University with Laurentians serving in the war, and later compiled a scrapbook. She also published “Tommie’s Newsletter” to share the location, status, and general news of those serving abroad – a sort of “Class Notes” for our military Laurentians. Reliving Memories at Reunion 2025 ❤️🤎

Reunion Weekend brings back more than just memories; it brings you home. Last weekend, more than 800 alumni revisited familiar spaces on campus and connected with old friends and new. Reunion Weekend is a good reminder that while time passes, some connections never fade. Relive those memories on the St. Lawrence Instagram account.

On May 30, President Morris informed the Laurentian community about the passing of Janet Collins '63, a St. Lawrence alumna and former member of the University Advancement staff. Remembered for her exacting attention to detail and her ability to make friends wherever she went, Janet embodied the values of service and community. Read the President's full message here. 

Wins Across The Board!

On the slopes, it was a monumental day for Emma Strack '25 and the Saints Nordic ski program, as she podiumed in the women’s 20-kilometer classic. The third-place finish is the first for the Saints since 2010, as Strack skied the course with with a final time of 1:03:54.2, finishing only 37.6 seconds behind first-place.

St. Lawrence hockey teams went 4-0 on the weekend, with both men's and women's teams scoring victories over Yale and Brown respectively. Abby Hustler '25 had two goals and four assists for the women’s team, earning ECAC Forward of the Week honors. Justin Paul '24 was the top scorer for the Men in a series of wins which included balanced scoring across the lineup.

Men’s and women’s basketball both had successful weekends, with the Saints women splitting with William Smith and RIT. Elizabeth Flynn '27, a first-year from Brentwood, Tennessee, had a career high in points and two double-doubles. The men saw two victories vaulting themselves into first place in the Liberty League standings. Adam Dudzinski '27 was the Liberty League performer of the week.

Annual Martin Luther King Jr. Service

The theme ‘Give Hope A Chance’ echoed through soulful songs and readings during an uplifting evening in Gunnison Memorial Chapel where our community gathered for the annual Martin Luther King Jr. service led by Rev. Dr. Shaun Whitehead. Together, we honored and celebrated Dr. King’s legacy with performances by the St. Lawrence Choral Society, Community Gospel Choir & Gospel Band, Laurentian Singers, Singing Saints, Singing Sinners, and The Upbeats. Unitedly, we reflect on Dr. King’s words that inspire us to pursue a community rooted in love.

Saints Earn ECAC Accolades and Net Wins

Women’s Hockey: Senior captain Abby Hustler was named the ECAC Hockey Forward of the Week, presented by Bluebird Hotels, the league office announced Tuesday morning. Hustler notched a goal and three assists, as the team recorded a sweep over Harvard and Dartmouth at Appleton Arena over the weekend. Hustler leads the Saints with six goals and 16 assists for 22 points this season. Hustler's 22 points ties for eighth in the ECAC. 

Men’s Hockey: Sophomore Mason Kucenski was named MAC Goaltending Goalie of the Week for the third time this season, as announced by the ECAC league office on Monday morning. Kucenski started both games this past weekend for the Saints going 1-0-1 and playing 125 minutes between the pipes. The netminder stopped 29 shots in the Scarlet and Brown's 3-2 win over No. 13/14 Dartmouth on Friday and made 26 in a shutout against Harvard on Saturday to complete his weekend. 

Men’s Squash: First-year Grégory Malsang took Rookie of the Week honors at the conference level after earning his first career win this past Sunday against the University of Rochester. At number two, Malsang faced Rochester’s Omar Zakaria and, following a nail-biting 11-9 win, Malsang won the second game 11-2 to take a commanding lead. The newcomer closed the set with an 11-6 result to pick up the victory. 

Track and Field: Both men’s and women’s track and field had first place finishes on home turf this weekend. They competed in the Saints Holiday Relays and finished at the top of the team score table in the competition that featured six other schools. First-years Isla Bougard Duncan and Erik Marelli each set personal records as they opened their collegiate careers on a high note–and Marelli won the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.98. Sophomore Quinn Sirgany also took first place in the women’s mile run.

Weekend Winnings!

St. Lawrence men’s hockey took home two victories in what was the first weekend sweep of the season, on Friday evening against Dartmouth 3-1, and Saturday night against Harvard 2-0. Graduate student Ben Kraws was named MAC Goaltending Goaltender of the Week in the ECAC, allowing just one goal on 57 shots. Saints women’s hockey came up with a 6-5 win against Dartmouth on Saturday, with Julia Gosling ’23 registering her 50^th goal as a Saint. Abby Hustler ’25 notched a hat trick, earning Saint of the Week honors. Men’s basketball and women’s basketball each went 1-1 on their weekend, with women’s basketball beating RPI and men’s basketball triumphing over Skidmore. First-year forward Elizabeth Flynn ’27 registered 31 rebounds, a league high, as she vaulted into first overall in the Liberty Leage in rebounds per game.

SLU Wins All Weekend Long

Women’s Track and Field: St. Lawrence opened the Holiday Relays with multiple wins. Junior Carly Zack won the 3000 in 11:03.29, junior Quinn Sirgany took the mile in 5:27.09, junior Charlotte Blake won the 1000 in 3:21.10, and senior Amelia Berthold claimed the 60-meter hurdles in 9.82.

Men’s Track and Field: The Saints posted several victories at the Holiday Relays. Junior Riley Cushman won the 600, first-year Luke Calvin captured the mile, and sophomore Erik Marelli won the 60 hurdles. St. Lawrence swept the relays and added field wins from junior Brendan O’Horo in the pole vault (3.95m) and junior John Mahoney in the long jump at 6.31 meters.

Women’s Basketball: Senior Jackie Malley scored 21 points and senior Hannah Van Dyke grabbed 12 rebounds to spark a fourth-quarter comeback in a five-point win at Rensselaer. The Saints move to 5-2 overall and 1-1 in league play heading into Wednesday’s home game vs. Hamilton.

Swimming and Diving: The men’s team advanced on the scoreboard at the Don Richards Invitational to place fourth, while the women’s team placed fifth overall among a crowded field at the large invite in Rochester, N.Y. First-year Sophie Nelson picked up a win for the Saints, securing victory in the 1650-yard freestyle.

Saints Dance the Night Away💃🏻🕺🏽 

This past weekend, the SLU Dance Ensemble performed their annual show—an expression of bold ideas, creative energy, and the spirit of our campus arts community. After a semester of studying different styles of dance and collaborating on choreography, our performers brought three nights of dynamic storytelling to the Gulick Theatre stage. Saints Shatter Records; Head to Liberty League Championships

The Saints track and field teams dominated the Intercollegiate Twilight Meet as Kimberly Merchant ’22 set a program record in the discus and several Saints secured top spots in their competitions as they head into the Liberty League Championships this weekend. Women’s lacrosse is headed to the Liberty Leagues after defeating RIT 21-14 to set a new program record for wins in a season and securing a 16-13 victory over Nazareth while men’s tennis beat Ithaca 6-3 after dominating SUNY Oswego 9-0 on the road. Saints Baseball defeated Skidmore 15-5 and 18-8 in a doubleheader after securing a 22-6 win over SUNY Canton 22-6 earlier in the week. Tapping Into Tradition

A beloved campus tradition returned to our campus during Moving-Up Day. The Omicron Delta Kappa honor society tapping ceremony welcomed several new members in recognition of their scholarship, leadership, service, and creativity.
