On May 16, President Morris informed the Laurentian community about the passing of Melinda Goss, a former assistant manager of the Brewer Bookstore. Known for her wide-ranging knowledge and thoughtful recommendations, Goss brought a genuine passion for books to her work and was a helpful, collegial presence to both staff and customers. On May 19, President Morris informed the Laurentian community about the passing of Joyce Hogle, who worked for 32 years in Dining and Catering. Remembered by colleagues as steady, capable, and skilled at her craft, she was known for her baked goods and for supporting the day-to-day operations that kept our community running smoothly. Commencement 2023

Saints Dominate Weekend Competitions

This weekend, Saints football dominated Castelton 42-6 while women's ice hockey defeated Providence 5-2 on the road. The wins continued with men's soccer securing a 2-1 win over SUNY Cortland while women's soccer topped Union 1-0 and the field hockey team secured a 4-0 win over Utica. Saints volleyball started their Liberty League Campaign with a 3-1 win over Union while Saints men's track and field won their home Ronald C. Hoffmann Invitational. Celebrating United World Colleges Day

Last week members of the St. Lawrence community came together in celebration of United World Colleges (UWC) Day. The annual global event highlights the strength and diversity of the UWC movement and its mission for a more peaceful and sustainable future and coincides with the United Nations’ International Day of Peace. St. Lawrence UWC scholars spent the evening attending events that speak to this year’s theme of “Peace Begins With Us” and reflected on what being effective changemakers looks like. Photo credit: Nancy Glennon ’23. The Class of 2024’s Commencement was an extra special occasion—for many, it was their first “real” graduation after their high school ceremony was cancelled due to the global pandemic.

You've left your mark on our campus with your creativity, resilience, and profound care for one another. You've built a community of scholars, athletes, artists, and activists that will continue to support and inspire you for the rest of your life. It's been an honor to watch you grow and it’s an honor to celebrate your commencement.

In Memory

SLU Connect Goes Coast to Coast

During the spring semester, students attended SLU Connect programs in San Francisco and Boston where they connected with alumni industry experts in a variety of fields, including ocean exploration, energy solutions, commercial real estate, investment banking, transportation, and e-commerce. Over the span of four days, students were immersed in roundtable discussions, guided company tours, networking receptions, and so much more! Student Research Investigates Ways to Save Lives 

Alice Khalil ’27, a neuroscience major and chemistry minor from Baniyas, Syria, spent her summer working on a faster, more sensitive way to detect heart attacks in their earliest stages. In the lab with Professor of Chemistry Samantha Glazier, she conducted research aimed at detecting even the smallest traces of troponin more accurately and earlier than current methods allow.

Vice President of the University and Dean of Academic Affairs Karl Schonberg and Vice President and Dean of Student Life Hagi Bradley sent a message to the community on Wednesday, August 30 announcing that the Campus Operating Status is yellow (moderate risk) and providing updates to the campus mask policy. 20 Years After 9/11: Faculty, Staff, Alumni to Host Event Series

Join St. Lawrence University faculty, staff, and alumni guests for a full week of activities (Sept. 3-11) as our community reflects on the many ways both our national and global communities have been impacted. Check out the schedule of events. 

Several members of the Saints men's and women's hockey teams were named Krampade All-American Scholars by the American Hockey Coaches Association for their academic success during the 2020-21 season. Saints Dominate Spring Matchups

Saints men’s lacrosse defeated Vassarr 19-7 after beating Middlebury 18-11 in an on-the-road matchup that landed Mark Mahoney ’22 a number six spot on ESPN’s Sports Center Top 10 Sports Plays in April. Women’s lacrosse dominated RPI 17-3 to move into second place in the Liberty Leagues standings while women’s tennis secured a 7-2 win over RIT and men’s tennis beat Union 5-4. Softball defeated Clarkson 8-6 while several members of the men's and women's track and field teams secured top performances during the Upstate Alternative Meet in Cortland and the Smashing Saints Esports team ended their season in the Sweet 16 of the ECAC playoffs. For up-to-date schedules, news, and scores visit SaintsAthletics.com.

Making Every Minute Count, 1856 Challenge is a Success

In 1,856 minutes, over 2,000 donors helped transform our students’ passions into world-changing abilities. Thanks to the support of Laurentians around the globe, a generous $100,000 challenge gift towards student scholarship was unlocked and together, our community raised over $479,000 to empower student research, community engagement, career prep, and so many other experiences that make St. Lawrence such an incredible place to live and learn. Tis' The Season of Softball, Baseball, Golf, and Lacrosse!

Jimmy King '26 was named the Individual Champion at the Liberty League Championships, leading Saints men’s golf to a second-place finish at the par-72 Shenendoah Golf Club at Turning Stone on Sunday. There was a playoff to determine the individual champion and Jimmy won on the second playoff hole. Jimmy finished with par on the first hole. Jimmy's opponent hit an errant drive on the second hole, leaving Jimmy with the win and a par.

Judge Murphy '24 tallied six goals and an assist for seven points to lead the third-ranked Saints men's lacrosse team to a 15-10 upset win over fourth-ranked RPI on Saturday afternoon in Troy, New York. With the win, the Saints clinched the second seed in the upcoming Liberty League Tournament and earned regular season co-championship honors, with three teams finishing league play at 6-1. Second to Judge, Daniel Mahoney '27 recorded four goals and two ground balls, while Ted Wilson '26 scored twice.

Two goals each from Liz Evans '24 and Jessica LaPlaca '27 were unfortunately not enough, as the seventh-seeded Saints women's lacrosse team fell 19-6 in the first round of the Liberty League Tournament to William Smith Tuesday.

Both Saints baseball and softball wrapped up their regular seasons with two wins over the weekend. Baseball took two of three games against Clarkson, while softball swept Skidmore. Softball heads to RPI this weekend, hoping to lock down a playoff spot, while baseball engages Clarkson once more in the end-of-season series.

Festival of Science, Scholarship, and Creativity! ❤️🤎

On Friday, we forego regularly scheduled classes to celebrate our students’ academic accomplishments during the Festival of Science, Scholarship, and Creativity. This year, we learned how stress affects metamorphosis in frogs, how students think about sustainability on campus, how retinol has changed our relationship with aging, and how math can help us make better decisions in games like Monopoly or Dungeons and Dragons (among many other fascinating topics). During our annual Dance Showcase, we watch 16 students perform contemporary, jazz, Irish step, and classical pointe numbers. In the Brush Art Gallery, our gallery exhibition focused on “what we hold.” The 12 senior artists featured used a variety of mediums to consider the things in their lives that are hard to let go of—for better or worse.

The President's Office, Academic Affairs, and Student Life sent a message to the community on Monday, Oct. 25, providing  updates on test results, announcing the University's operating status has changed to Green (low risk), sharing information about local and regional public health conditions, and providing guidance on when proof of vaccination is required for public indoor events. While studying remotely during the 2020-21 academic year, Hannah Rutkowski '22 found herself imagining what it would be like to reside in one of St. Lawrence's historic buildings as the notorious ghost of Herring-Cole Hall. 

Saints Teams Secure Liberty League Playoff Spots; Fall Sports Continue

Saints Field Hockey defeated Union College 6-2 on Sunday, securing a spot in the Liberty League playoffs while Saints Volleyball swept Union College 3-0 on Saturday to qualify for the Liberty League Tournament for the second straight season. The wins continued with Women's Soccer defeating Skidmore College 2-1 on the road while Men’s Soccer defeated Skidmore College 3-2 at home on Saturday. On Friday, Women's Hockey swept RIT 3-0 at home while Volleyball beat Skidmore College 3-0 on the road. Throughout the weekend, several members of the men's and women's swimming and diving teams emerged victorious in their individual races during their respective season openers against Skidmore College. Last week, Esports beat Moravian University 2 - 0 and Concord University 3-0 while women’s soccer defeated SUNY Canton 6-0.

Purple Week

As part of this year's Purple Week, The Advocates and other student advocacy groups organized powerful events on campus to raise awareness and show support for domestic and sexual violence survivors. On Tuesday Oct. 19, students came together for a candlelight vigil on the Brush Family Quad after listening to survivors courageously speak as part of “Take Back the Night.”
