Tis' The Season of Softball, Baseball, Golf, and Lacrosse!

Jimmy King '26 was named the Individual Champion at the Liberty League Championships, leading Saints men’s golf to a second-place finish at the par-72 Shenendoah Golf Club at Turning Stone on Sunday. There was a playoff to determine the individual champion and Jimmy won on the second playoff hole. Jimmy finished with par on the first hole. Jimmy's opponent hit an errant drive on the second hole, leaving Jimmy with the win and a par.

Judge Murphy '24 tallied six goals and an assist for seven points to lead the third-ranked Saints men's lacrosse team to a 15-10 upset win over fourth-ranked RPI on Saturday afternoon in Troy, New York. With the win, the Saints clinched the second seed in the upcoming Liberty League Tournament and earned regular season co-championship honors, with three teams finishing league play at 6-1. Second to Judge, Daniel Mahoney '27 recorded four goals and two ground balls, while Ted Wilson '26 scored twice.

Two goals each from Liz Evans '24 and Jessica LaPlaca '27 were unfortunately not enough, as the seventh-seeded Saints women's lacrosse team fell 19-6 in the first round of the Liberty League Tournament to William Smith Tuesday.

Both Saints baseball and softball wrapped up their regular seasons with two wins over the weekend. Baseball took two of three games against Clarkson, while softball swept Skidmore. Softball heads to RPI this weekend, hoping to lock down a playoff spot, while baseball engages Clarkson once more in the end-of-season series.

Festival of Science, Scholarship, and Creativity! ❤️🤎

On Friday, we forego regularly scheduled classes to celebrate our students’ academic accomplishments during the Festival of Science, Scholarship, and Creativity. This year, we learned how stress affects metamorphosis in frogs, how students think about sustainability on campus, how retinol has changed our relationship with aging, and how math can help us make better decisions in games like Monopoly or Dungeons and Dragons (among many other fascinating topics). During our annual Dance Showcase, we watch 16 students perform contemporary, jazz, Irish step, and classical pointe numbers. In the Brush Art Gallery, our gallery exhibition focused on “what we hold.” The 12 senior artists featured used a variety of mediums to consider the things in their lives that are hard to let go of—for better or worse.

“Digital Storytelling for the Environment” Grant Awarded

The Digital Scholarship team at St. Lawrence University has been awarded a $12K grant from the Northern New York Library Network (NNLYN) to leverage digital storytelling tools and techniques to help students and faculty construct powerful environmental narratives with real-world impacts. The grant supports the purchase of professional production equipment intended for outdoor use, such as light-shaping tools, field-recording microphones, and macro lenses, as well as the creation of new training workshops and related web resources on the fundamentals of environmental storytelling. 

• Women’s Hockey—On the heels of two wins over No. 15 Mercyhurst, graduate student Anna Segedi was named the ECAC Hockey Forward of the Week, presented by Bluebird Hotels, while junior goaltender Emma-Sofie Nordström was awarded MAC Goaltending Goalie of the Week honors. Segedi tallied a goal and an assist, and her goal on Saturday was the game-winner and her 100th career point in Scarlet and Brown. Nordström completed the weekend sweep in goal for the Saints, including a shutout 3-0 win on Friday, as she made 45 saves on the weekend.
• Rowing—A pair of Saints’ first-place finishes highlighted the weekend at the Head of the Geneseo for the men’s and women’s rowing teams, with the men’s Novice 8 cruising to first with a time of 19:47.300. The women's Novice 8 coxed by first-year Eden Keeney took first place, besting St. John Fisher, with a time of 21:48.932.
• Men’s Golf—Senior Ben Scholes shot one under par and claimed the individual title, leading men’s golf to a first-place finish at the Skidmore Fall Invitational at the Saratoga Spa State Park Golf Course this weekend. Scholes shot a 71 at the par-72 course to come away with the individual title.
• Men’s Hockey—Senior captain Mason Waite scored with 12.6 seconds in regulation and senior Tomáš Mazura put on the finishing touches scoring in overtime to lift men’s hockey to a 4-3 win over Niagara on Friday night, leading the Saints to a split of their weekend. They are now 3-1-0 on the season.
• Men’s Soccer—Sophomore Baker Diaz scored his second goal in as many games to send men's soccer to a 1-0 win over RIT Saturday. Diaz earned Liberty League Defensive Performer of the Week as a result of his outing. St. Lawrence improved to 5-2-3 overall and 2-0-2 in Liberty League play.
• Men’s Cross Country—First-year Kyle Gaffney was men’s cross country’s Liberty League rookie of the week, after performing as the top-performing first-year for St. Lawrence at their dual meet against Clarkson. Sophomore Henry Hagen took first in the event for the Scarlet and Brown.

Northern Lights Shine on St. Lawrence

When Sophie Margola '21 opens the front doors to the Elsa Gunnison Appleton Riding Hall, she is welcomed by the smell of hay, fresh shavings, and arena footing–inspiring a unique nickname and some of her fondest memories. 

CIIS Launches Travel Grant Map

The Center for International and Intercultural Studies (CIIS) partnered with the Digital Scholarship team to  create an interactive map that features personal essays written by travel grant recipients. Users can select countries around the globe to read about St. Lawrence students' funded research experiences.

Volleyball Player Hits Career Milestone; Field Hockey Coach Fran Grembowicz Celebrates 200th Career Win

Last week, Natalie Piper '22 recorded her 1,000th kill for Saints Volleyball as the team beat SUNY Potsdam 3-0 at home. Piper is the quickest to 1,000 in the program's 41-year history. The week's wins continued with Saints Esports securing their second straight win in the ECAC season against Nazareth College 2-0 and defeating New England College 3-0. On Thursday, the volleyball team defeated SUNY Plattsburgh 3-1 on the road.
On Friday, the field hockey team toppled William Smith 2 -1, earning Head Coach Fran Grembowicz her 200th career win, while both the women's and men's soccer teams defeated Bard College 2-1.  On Saturday, Volleyball defeated Hamilton College 3-1 while the Esports team beat Long Island University 2-1. On Sunday, the field hockey team secured a 2-1 win over the University of Rochester at home.

Laying the Groundwork for Plastic Degradation Research 

Rae Dunbar '23, a combined environmental studies and biology major, wanted answers to the global problem of plastic pollution. After receiving a stipend to spend eight weeks on campus this past summer as a University Fellow,  she laid that groundwork for future researchers interested in plastic degradation.

Saints Lacrosse End Seasons at NCAAs; Scarlet and Brown Earn All-League Honors

After a record-breaking season and first NCAA appearance in over three decades, Saints Women’s Lacrosse concluded its spring season during a second-round matchup against Tufts. The No. 10 Saints Men’s Lacrosse defeated Cortland 15-14 in the second round of the NCAA tournament but fell to Bowdin in the third round. This week, the men’s and women’s track and field teams will head to Pennsylvania to compete in the All-Atlantic Region Track and Field Conference. In recognition of their stellar spring sports performances, several members of the Scarlet and Brown earned All-League Honors. For up-to-date schedules, news, and scores visit SaintsAthletics.com.

Spring Student-Athletes Earn Liberty League All-Academic Honors

A total of 109 St. Lawrence spring sport student-athletes earned Liberty League All-Academic honors, recognizing their all-star performances in the classroom. To be recognized as a member of the All-Academic Team a student-athlete must be a sophomore or higher in class standing with a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.30.
