Here We Go, Saints Challenge Success

Thanks to the generosity of the Laurentian community,  Saints Athletics more than doubled its goal of 1,000 donors and together with the Laurentian community, raised over $550,000 in support of St. Lawrence student-athletes. 

Top Flights for the Saints, Fall Sports Continue

Saints men's and women's tennis teams dominated the competition this weekend. The tandem of Catherine Gamble '23 and Molly Jespersen '23 won the flight A Championship over Union at the St. Lawrence Invitational while Edvin Strandberg '25 came away with the B flight, and Broderick Pinto '25 won the C flight over Union to lead the men's tennis team at the Dutchmen Invitational. The wins continued with Saints women's rowing opening its season with a first-place win over Mount Holyoke while first-year Matthew Serrano won the Kangaroo Invitational 8k to lead the men's cross country team to the title. The field hockey team secured 1-0 home opener win over Oswego while the volleyball team defeated Medaille College 3-2 after beating Utica 3-2.  For up-to-date schedules, news, and scores visit SaintsAthletics.com.

Saints Celebrate Anniversaries, Wins, and New Captains for the 2024-25 Season

Field Hockey—St. Lawrence field hockey celebrated its 50th anniversary Saturday with a commanding 4-1 victory over Oswego State.

Men’s Soccer—The men’s soccer team claimed the Mayor’s Cup with a 4-0 win over Hartwick after a 1-1 draw with Oneonta earlier in the weekend. The offense surged as the Saints found the back of the net four times to secure the title.

Women’s Tennis— Women’s tennis earned four draw championships on the final day of the Union Invitational in Schenectady. In the B draw, sophomore Yvette Karera secured her title with a comeback win 2-6, 6-1, 10-4. Yvette also teamed up with her sister, sophomore Ariane Karera, to win 8-4 in the A doubles draw, to advance to the final. The Karera sisters claimed another 8-4 victory against teammates junior Molly Jespersen and first-year Eleanor McDermed, giving Yvette her second draw win of the tournament.

Hockey—Saints women’s and men’s hockey announced their captains for the upcoming season. Graduate student Anna Segedi will serve as captain for the women’s team, with graduate student Kristina Bahl, senior Abby Hustler, and graduate student Melissa Jeffries as alternates. For the men’s team, senior Mason Waite, senior Philippe Chapleau, senior Drake Burgin, and senior Ty Naaykens will wear the ‘C’ this season.

New Year, New Opportunities at the Club and Organization Fair 

The Club and Organization Fair brought together over 150 student-led clubs and organizations, offering everything from outdoor adventures to arts, advocacy, and student leadership. Whether students are looking to try something new or dig deeper into their passions, there’s a place for everyone. St. Lawrence's Athletic Excellence!

The accolades continue for women’s hockey in the postseason awards, with head coach Chris Wells being named US College Hockey Organization (USCHO) Coach of the Year. Under his guidance, St. Lawrence finished the 2023-24 season with a 28-11-0 overall record, finishing 18-4-0 in ECAC play. Abby Hustler was also named to the USCHO third team.

The No. 5 nationally ranked men’s lacrosse team took another victory 14-5 over Vassar on the weekend, re-writing the history books in the process. The Saints maintained their perfect record with this victory, adjusting their record to 11-0 and 3-0 in the Liberty League. The 11-0 start is a program record for the Scarlet and Brown and the best start since the 2016 team, who advanced to the Final Four.

Men’s and women’s tennis both came away with victories on the court this week. On the women’s side, it was a dominant performance as all nine Saints took victories in a 9-0 shutout of SUNY Cortland. They also beat RIT 8-1 a day earlier. Molly Jespersen '26, Ariane Karera '27 and Yvette Karera '27 went perfect over the 17-1 weekend for the Scarlet and Brown.

Men’s tennis won their matchup 6-3. At number one, Adam Heilbronner '24 won his first set 6-4 but would be forced to the third set by Grahith Movva. Adam ultimately took the 7-6 (7-2) win over his competition. Much like Adam, Cole Hamilton '24 at three won the first set but lost in a tiebreaker to head to the deciding third set, which Hamilton won 6-1.

The Saints’ Rocket League team bested Utica 4-3 in esports competition Friday, in a best-of-seven series. The win vaults the Saints to the finals of their northeastern division to face East Stroudsburg for the championship title on Friday, April 12. The match will be available on Twitch.

Softball also padded their record with three more wins over four games in the past week, including two extra-inning victories in the process. Their first came 6-5 in eight innings against SUNY Poly, and the second was against Clarkson Sunday. Their record to this point is 11-6, as they enjoy their best start to a season since 2017.

Off the field, the athletic department announced the appointment of Bill DeCoteau as the new Faculty Athletics Representative. DeCoteau joined St. Lawrence in 2005, and currently serves as the Absalom Graves Gaines Professor in the Psychology Department. He brings many years of involvement in local community sports to the role, and is a former student-athlete. Welcome, Bill!

Celebrating Rebert Hall Renovations! ❤️🤎🎉

There was cause for celebration last week when we cut the scarlet ribbon to officially unveil the exciting new renovations to Rebert Hall, one of our first-year residences on campus.  

President Kate Morris and Vice President of Student Life Jon Duraj each said a few words to mark the occasion, and Faith Olusegun ’25 and Brandon Christopher Dickson ’25 teamed up to do the honors.

This Month in Athletics!

Twelve Laurentians entered the St. Lawrence Athletics Hall of Fame Friday evening at the 2024 Robert J. Sheldon Induction Ceremony. Congratulations to inductees Manny Brito ’97, Andre White ’97, Greg Sutton ’99, Ali Montacer ’01, Jamal Ballantyne ’02, Ryan Carruth ’02, James Brush ’77, Danielle Giannone ’96, Rachel Barrie McKay ’03, Eric Jones ’10, Wendy Pavlus ’11, and Scott Woodburn. 

St. Lawrence Athletics and Recreation also announced the retirement of Senior Associate Vice President for Athletics Bob Durocher. A member of the athletics department for 35 years, the Canton, New York native has left an indelible mark on the department. He joined as assistant men's and women's soccer coach in 1989 and head men's coach in 1990 before becoming an assistant athletic director in 2000. He was then selected to lead athletics in 2015, and has served in the role ever since. The highlights of his tenure as head of the athletic department include two phases of renovation at Appleton Arena. The first phase included a multi-million dollar renovation of the arena, with the completely donor-funded project resulting in totally renovated player lounges and locker rooms, as well as an updated ice rink and production facilities. Durocher will remain in the position until a successor is selected. A nationwide search will begin immediately. 

Seven members of the men's lacrosse team earned United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (USILA) All-America honors, as announced by the association on Thursday morning. Judge Murphy '24 and Tripp Clark '24 garnered First-Team honors, while Paddy Condon '25 earned Second-Team honors and Caleb Torres '25 earned Third-Team honors. Ben Hutchinson '24, Bobby Wells '25 and Michael Marinello '25 were all selected as Honorable Mention All-Americans.

Saints rowing teams received some accolades from the Liberty League following their season’s culmination. Sophomore Angie Vertullo '26 was awarded First-Team All-Liberty League accolades, while senior Sasha Henderson '24 earned Second-Team honors for the women's rowing team, as announced by the league office on Thursday afternoon. Seniors John Norrgard '24 and Jack Whamond '24 earned First-Team All-Liberty League honors for men’s rowing, while Robert Fusting '24 and Annabella Kennedy '24 earned Second-Team All-Liberty League honors.

Saints tennis programs also saw multiple athletes honored at the conference level. On the men’s side, senior Adam Heilbronner '24 was named a Second Team singles selection, and earned Second Team doubles honors alongside Broderick Pinto '25. Sophomore standouts Angelica Aksdal-Jansen '26 and Molly Jespersen '26 were each honored as All-Liberty League selections for women’s tennis

Reunion Weekend 2024: One for the History Books! ❤️🤎

Reunion Weekend 2024 was one for the history books! We celebrated the 50th anniversary of the Kenya Semester Program. We welcomed the "Great 8" back to campus (the classes of 1978 through 1985) for their 40th and 45th Reunion milestones. We sipped Scarlet & Brown Ale and 1856 Lager courtesy of Weird Window Brewing, honored our recent Athletic Hall of Famers, and made new memories with our favorite people in our favorite place.

Conversation, Contemplation, and Transformation 

The St. Lawrence community recently came together in recognition of Diversity and Inclusion Week by focusing on fostering conversation, reflecting on identity, and celebrating many aspects of intersectionality and diversity. The week-long celebration featured acclaimed musician and race relations activist Daryl Davis and Buffalo State College Historian Steve Peraza ’06, who has done extensive research into the life and legacy of 1933 St. Lawrence alum Jeffrey Worthington Campbell. Saints Secure Titles, Kick Off Spring Seasons

During the CSA Individual Nationals Saints men's squash player Lewis Anderson '25 secured the Molloy East division title.  The sophomore started the title match strong, winning the opening game 11-7, leveling the second 1-1, and dominating 11-4, 11-5 to secure the title. The wins for the Scarlet and Brown continued with several Saints kicking off the spring season as men's lacrosse beat SUNY Potsdam 19-8 and women's tennis swept SUNY Geneseo 9-0. During the AARTFC Regional meet, Alli Sibold '22 won the mile and several Saints secured personal best times. After a high-stakes matchup, men's basketball concluded its season in the first round of the NCAA Tournament against the University of Mary Washington. Skating Saints Charles W. Appleton II head coach Brent Brekke has been named a finalist for ECAC Hockey's Coach of the Year Award. The winner of the award will be announced on Thursday, March 16. Saints Secure Spring Break Wins

The Scarlet and Brown returned home after dominating Spring Break competitions in Florida and Maryland last week. Saints baseball beat St. Olaf College 6-1 and Union 2-1, 8-5 while men's tennis defeated Goucher College 6-3 and Hope College 7-2 and women's tennis topped Luther College 5-4 and George Fox University 8-1. Over the weekend, Saints softball dominated Keuka College 13-2 as men's lacrosse defeated Western New England University 14-9 and women's lacrosse beat Ithaca 12-14 after defeating Stevenson University 11-10 earlier in the week. For up-to-date schedules, news, and scores visit SaintsAthletics.com.

Saints Skate to ECAC Quarterfinals; Spring Sports Continue

Following a four-game series against Brown, Saints men’s hockey is advancing to the ECAC Quarterfinals where they’ll take on Quinnipiac beginning Friday, March 11 in Connecticut. After defeating Brown 4-1 on Friday, and falling in a 2-1 in an overtime contest, the Skating Saints secured a 4-3 winner-take-all victory on Sunday. The wins for the Scarlet and Brown continued with women’s lacrosse beating SUNY Oneonta 18-8 and men’s lacrosse defeating SUNY Potsdam 16-5 in their season openers while men’s tennis dominated RIT 8-1. ECAC Hockey announced that for the second consecutive season, Lucy Morgan ’23 is the 2022 MAC Women’s Goaltender of the Year and the Liberty League named women's swimming and diving's Maggie Wenger '24 Rookie of the Year. Alpine skiing's Ava Mattsson '22, Nordic skiing's Emma Strack '25 and Brian Beyerbach '23, and men's track and fields' Timothy Boyce '25 will compete in the NCAA Championships this weekend. Peterson '24 Wins Silver at 2022 Winter Paralympic Games

Sydney Peterson'24 , a member of the Saints' Nordic ski team, won a silver medal in the women's long-distance classical technique during her 2022 Winter Paralympic Beijing Games debut in Beijing, China. Read about Sydney's victory.

Updated Spectator Policy

St. Lawrence Athletics remains committed to adhering to CDC, St. Lawrence County, NCAA SSI, and St. Lawrence University recommendations and protocols. Masking is now optional for fully vaccinated individuals attending athletic events and masks are required for unvaccinated individuals when inside athletic facilities. Saints Skate to Victory; Seasons Continue

The Scarlet and Brown dominated the competition on Friday as men's hockey defeated Princeton 6-2 in Appleton Arena and women's hockey secured a 7-3 win over Dartmouth on the road. The weekend wins for the Saints continued with men's basketball securing a 69-65 overtime win over Ithaca on Saturday after defeating RPI 56-53 on Friday while men's squash beat MIT 5-4. Men's tennis defeated Daemen University 7-2 at home as the Saints men's track and field DMR team took first place at the Fastrack Invitational. Saints Back in Action

The athletic season is ramping up for the Scarlet and Brown! Women’s soccer started off strong with a 2-1 win over DeSales. An impressive race by both the men's and women’s cross country team resulted in both teams bringing home first place in their season-opening events. The women’s field hockey team defeated Oneonta taking a 3-2 lead in the first half, bringing home the win for the Saints! Women’s Tennis duo, Angelica Aksdal-Jansen and Molly Jespersen, claimed the A Flight Doubles while Ariane Karera won the B Flight Singles Final to highlight the team at the Mary Hosking Invitational. Weekend Wins for the Scarlet and Brown

It was a great weekend to be a Saint! The football team brought the Hoffman Cup back to Canton after securing a 30-19 win over Norwich on Saturday while men's soccer defeated Hartwick 3-2 after tying its program record with a 9-0 win over SUNY Canton last week. Women's soccer topped Farmingdale 1-0 to remain undefeated while Jackson Hamilton '23 won the Hamilton Short Course Invitational as Saints men's cross country secured the team title and Alli Sibold '24 won the 4k race to take the women's team to a victory. The men's tennis team wrapped up the St. Lawrence Fall Classic with sophomores Broderick Pinto, John Hill-Edgar, and Edvin Strandberg securing individual victories. De-Stress with Pets

St. Lawrence students started off their weekend with furry friends! Every Friday afternoon the Office of Wellness Education hosts ‘Pet De-Stress,’ an event gathering a group of friendly dogs or cats to campus, eager to meet students and give them plenty of love.
