On Monday August 28, President Morris sent a message to the community sharing that Piskor Professor Emeritus of Sociology Stuart Lee Hills GP’16 died on August 2 at the age of 90. For more than two decades at St. Lawrence, he served as a devoted teacher and mentor, and was a prolific researcher in his discipline. Read the Message.

On Tuesday, Oct. 25, President Morris sent a message to the community about the passing of Jim Shuman, associate professor emeritus of education at St. Lawrence, who across his nearly 50-year career, shared his love for teaching with students who became teachers and leaders who extend his legacy. Saints Skate to ECAC Sweep

It was a great weekend to be a Saint as women's ice hockey dominated the competition during ECAC conference play at Appleton. The Scarlet and Brown skated to a 1-0 win over Union on Saturday after securing a 3-0 win over RPI on Friday. The wins continued with women's swimming and diving dominating Clarkson 135-95, field hockey topping Morrisville 3-0 to conclude its season, Saints football securing a 35-21 win over Rochester, and men's soccer defeating Hobart 1-0 after shutting out Plattsburgh 3-0 earlier in the week. For up-to-date schedules, news, and scores visit SaintsAthletics.com.

Saints Net Highlight-Reel Performances 

Volleyball: The Saints won six of seven sets Saturday at the SUNY Potsdam Triad, earning wins over the Bears and Oswego State. They’re now 12-7 heading into a crucial conference weekend.

Women’s Hockey: The Saints took Vermont to a shootout Friday after a 1-1 tie, highlighted by junior Abby Hehl’s viral between-the-legs goal that ranked No. 2 on SportsCenter’s Top 10. SLU sits No. 14 nationally after a 0-1-1 weekend vs. the Catamounts.

Men’s Rowing: The Novice 8 led the Saints at the Head of the Genesee in Rochester, finishing second in 18:37.505 to top RIT (21:59.323).

Men’s Hockey: Seniors Tyler Cristall, Isack Bandu, and Frankie Carogioiello scored to give SLU a 3-2 lead, and junior Gunnar Thoreson added two empty-netters in a 5-2 home-opening win over Vermont. Junior Mason Kucenski made 59 saves on the weekend and earned MAC Goaltending Goalie of the Week honors.

Women’s Tennis: Seniors Angelica Aksdal-Jansen and Molly Jespersen swept the top singles and doubles flights at the Hamilton Invitational. Aksdal-Jansen defeated William Smith’s Haley Levine 6-0, 6-2 and teamed with Jespersen for a 6-1 doubles win. The senior also notched her 100th career victory on day one.

A Peek at Peak Weekend 🌄

For 43 years, Peak Weekend has been one of St. Lawrence’s most unique and meaningful traditions, connecting students with the Adirondacks and with each other. This past weekend, students hiked across the High Peaks region, and together, they summited all 46 Adirondack High Peaks. More than just a weekend outdoors, Peak Weekend represents a deep sense of community, shared challenge, and a longstanding tradition rooted in adventure and place. On October 9, President Morris informed the Laurentian community about the passing of Ronald Waske '69, a beloved alumnus and longtime Head Athletic Trainer at St. Lawrence University. During his time here, Ron cared for and mentored generations of student-athletes, and shaped countless careers and lives. Ron is remembered for his deep knowledge, his generosity, and his commitment to others. Read the full message here. 

Academic Affairs and Student Life sent a campus health message to the community on Friday, Dec. 10, sharing a campus health update on recent test results and clinic information. Read the message. 

Prepare for the Unexpected: Stormy Skies, Claustrophobia, and the Art of Pinhole Cameras

Using cardboard boxes, tape, and aluminum foil, students built cameras to create small aperture to allow for exposure of chemically treated paper housed in the chamber of the box. Their unique results included a 32-pinhole lens camera used to make self-portraits; a 360-view multi-lens camera, and a floss container repurposed as a pinhole camera held in the student’s mouth during the exposure.

Saints Basketball Teams Top Clarkson; Winter Sports Return Dec. 29

Women's Basketball ended the semester undefeated after dominating Clarkson, 62-38, to improve to 8-0 on the season, while Men's Basketball improved to 6-1 with a 65-59 win over the Golden Knights. Saints Athletics will continue their winter schedules on Wednesday, December 29, with Men's Hockey facing off against UMass Lowell at Appleton Arena.

The President's Office, Academic Affairs, and Student Life sent a message to the community on Friday, Oct. 1 providing an update on last week’s test results, a  change to the Campus Operating Status (Yellow-A), adjustments to testing protocols, information about Mid-Semester Break, and key public health reminders. Saints Take Advantage of Summer Semester 
St. Lawrence student athletes made the most of their summer in Canton. Between practice sessions and a demanding compressed academic schedule, they took advantage of opportunities to help them stay on track for the fall sports season. 

12-Hour Shift: Combating COVID-19 One Shot at a Time
For Curtis Amory '23, working for St. Lawrence Emergency Medical Services (EMS) in fall 2020, was difficult but rewarding.  After experiencing firsthand the damage COVID-19 can do, he remained committed to helping the North Country by working at a vaccination clinic.

Skating Saints Defeat Clarkson in Exhibition Contest; Fall Sports Continue 

In their first game since the ECAC Championship, the men's ice hockey team defeated 19th ranked Clarkson 3 - 0 in an exhibition contest on Saturday at Cheel Arena. The Saturday wins continued with the field hockey team securing its first Liberty League win of the season by defeating RPI 2-1 at home.

On Friday, the Esports Overwatch team topped Lackawanna 3-0 for their first win of the season while women's ice hockey defeated Syracuse  4-1 at Appleton.  Last week, Lillian Sullivan '23 and Caitlyn Avery '23 won their doubles and singles matches to lead women's tennis to a 7-2 win over SUNY Oneonta at home.

A Nose for Conservation

As part of a six-week summer research project, Visiting Assistant Professor of Biology Kristine Hoffman, Julia Sirois ’23, and Newt, a labrador trained to detect several species of turtles, are scouring the Rhode Island landscape to find out how many of less common species of turtles are living there. Learn more about Newt on the St. Lawrence Twitter account. 

On November 1, President Morris sent a message to the Laurentian community about the passing of Frederick "Fred" Wright, Jr. who displayed a quiet heroism in his everyday life and worked at St. Lawrence for 23 years. Read the message. 

Saints Shatter Records and Secure Wins 

Men’s Cross-Country: Junior Nick Lyndaker broke a 13-year-old course record as he ran for a time of 24:35.3 on Saturday and earned an individual championship for men’s cross country. As a team, the Saints finished second overall. Lyndaker's record is the fastest since Lee Berube of SUNY Geneseo ran a 24:39.4 in 2011, breaking a 13-year-old record. His individual championship is the first by a St. Lawrence runner since Joseph Smith in 2019. Lyndaker also set the fastest winning eight-kilometer time in Liberty League history. He earned all-Liberty League first-team honors with the win.  

Women’s Cross-Country: First-years Avery Blanchard and Charlotte Blake were both awarded all-Liberty League second team honors for their performances in the women’s six-kilometer race. 

Riding: The riding team resumed their winning ways for the second weekend of the season with a win at SUNY Geneseo on Saturday as well as a home-win Sunday at Elsa Gunnison Appleton Riding Hall. On Saturday, the Scarlet and Brown claimed their third win of the season at the final SUNY Geneseo show, as junior Annie Kammer was named the High Point Rider and the Saints recorded six class wins. Senior Sydney Curley took second place in Novice Equitation. On Sunday, the Saints recorded their fourth win as the High Point Team with 47 points besting the reserve team's 42 points. 

Men’s Soccer: Sophomore striker Henry Brown scored his 11th goal of the season, and the Saints got an own-goal to go their way late as the men's soccer team extended their unbeaten streak to 14 games in a 2-2 tie with Hobart Saturday. St. Lawrence moved to 8-2-6 on the year with the draw and finished the regular season unbeaten in Liberty league play with a 5-0-4 record and 19 points. Despite this, the Saints will settle for second place in the regular season standings after Vassar earned their 20th league point with their win over RIT. The Saints now host the winner of Skidmore and Ithaca in the conference semifinals, with the winner heading to the Liberty League championship game. 

Women’s Swimming: The St. Lawrence women's swimming and diving team recorded their first win of the season Friday, taking a 160-127 victory on the back of a big performance from sophomore Amelia Stacy. Stacy won four races on the day, taking first in every event she appeared in over the course of the dual meet. She took first place in the 200 Fly with a time of 2:21.59, the 100 Fly with a time of 1:05.01, the 200 IM touching the wall in 2:19.27, and, as a member of the 200 medley relay, the Saints took first place in that event as well.

Make a Difference Day

Over 400 Saints stepped up on Make a Difference Day, spreading out across seven North Country towns to volunteer with 23 local homes and 18 community partners. From raking leaves to lending a hand wherever needed, our students showed what it means to support our community. Thank you to everyone who made this day a success!
