Saints Secure Wins to Kick Off the Fall Season

Saints Men’s Golf secured its first win of the season with a combined score of 602 at the Oliver D. Appleton Golf Course, marking the first victory for first-year Head Coach Dave Clausen at St. Lawrence. Gabe Ward ’27 finished as the tournament runner-up with a combined score of 147, earning him the Saints Athlete of the Week honors. Mary Grace McCann ’25 led the women’s golf team to a fourth-place finish at the St. Lawrence Invitational, placing third individually with a combined score of 157 (77, 80). Sadie Cumming ’28 also performed well, finishing 11th with a score of 169 (84, 85) in her collegiate debut. The winning streak for the Scarlet and Brown continued as Nick Lyndaker '26 secured a first-place finish at the Plattsburgh 5K, with a time of 16:11.4, propelling the Saints Men’s Cross Country team to the top of the leaderboard. Avery Blanchard ’28 led the women’s cross country team to a first-place finish with a time of 19:28.0 while Charlotte Blake ’27 and Adriana Cecchetelli ’26 followed closely, finishing in second (19:50.8) and third (20:02.1), respectively.  At the Mary Hosking Invitational, Molly Jespersen ’26 advanced to the A draw final for Saints Women’s Tennis. She defeated RIT 8-6 in the semifinal match before falling to the University of Rochester.  Saints Field Hockey will celebrate its 50th anniversary with alumni and friends during the home opener on Saturday, September 7, at 7 p.m. against SUNY Oswego.

Campus is buzzing with excitement and vibrant with scarlet and brown. From pre-orientation trips, move-in, and matriculation, to the FYP Cup, the Adirondack dinner, and the first day of classes, the Fall 2024 semester is officially underway at St. Lawrence. On November 1, President Morris sent a message to the Laurentian community about the passing of Frederick "Fred" Wright, Jr. who displayed a quiet heroism in his everyday life and worked at St. Lawrence for 23 years. Read the message. 

Saints Shatter Records and Secure Wins 

Men’s Cross-Country: Junior Nick Lyndaker broke a 13-year-old course record as he ran for a time of 24:35.3 on Saturday and earned an individual championship for men’s cross country. As a team, the Saints finished second overall. Lyndaker's record is the fastest since Lee Berube of SUNY Geneseo ran a 24:39.4 in 2011, breaking a 13-year-old record. His individual championship is the first by a St. Lawrence runner since Joseph Smith in 2019. Lyndaker also set the fastest winning eight-kilometer time in Liberty League history. He earned all-Liberty League first-team honors with the win.  

Women’s Cross-Country: First-years Avery Blanchard and Charlotte Blake were both awarded all-Liberty League second team honors for their performances in the women’s six-kilometer race. 

Riding: The riding team resumed their winning ways for the second weekend of the season with a win at SUNY Geneseo on Saturday as well as a home-win Sunday at Elsa Gunnison Appleton Riding Hall. On Saturday, the Scarlet and Brown claimed their third win of the season at the final SUNY Geneseo show, as junior Annie Kammer was named the High Point Rider and the Saints recorded six class wins. Senior Sydney Curley took second place in Novice Equitation. On Sunday, the Saints recorded their fourth win as the High Point Team with 47 points besting the reserve team's 42 points. 

Men’s Soccer: Sophomore striker Henry Brown scored his 11th goal of the season, and the Saints got an own-goal to go their way late as the men's soccer team extended their unbeaten streak to 14 games in a 2-2 tie with Hobart Saturday. St. Lawrence moved to 8-2-6 on the year with the draw and finished the regular season unbeaten in Liberty league play with a 5-0-4 record and 19 points. Despite this, the Saints will settle for second place in the regular season standings after Vassar earned their 20th league point with their win over RIT. The Saints now host the winner of Skidmore and Ithaca in the conference semifinals, with the winner heading to the Liberty League championship game. 

Women’s Swimming: The St. Lawrence women's swimming and diving team recorded their first win of the season Friday, taking a 160-127 victory on the back of a big performance from sophomore Amelia Stacy. Stacy won four races on the day, taking first in every event she appeared in over the course of the dual meet. She took first place in the 200 Fly with a time of 2:21.59, the 100 Fly with a time of 1:05.01, the 200 IM touching the wall in 2:19.27, and, as a member of the 200 medley relay, the Saints took first place in that event as well.

Make a Difference Day

Over 400 Saints stepped up on Make a Difference Day, spreading out across seven North Country towns to volunteer with 23 local homes and 18 community partners. From raking leaves to lending a hand wherever needed, our students showed what it means to support our community. Thank you to everyone who made this day a success! Men's Soccer Claims Liberty League Title

After defeating RPI 2-1 on Saturday, the No. 5 Saints men’s soccer team toppled Ithaca College 3-1, claiming the Liberty League title and securing the ninth title for the program since 2004 when the conference was formed. The Scarlet and Brown will head to Montclair, N.J., to take on Washington College in the NCAA Tournament, their 23rd NCAA appearance in program history, and fourth time under head coach Mike Toshack. 

Volleyball celebrated a come-from-behind 3-2 win over RIT on Friday to earn a spot in the Liberty League finals, where they fell to Clarkson 3-0 in the championship match on Saturday. Women’s Swimming and Diving defeated Bard College 91-48 while the men’s team topped Bard 61-51 at home on Saturday. Grace Jackson '22 earned Champion High Point Rider honors this weekend as Saints Riding rose to the top as the High Point Team at both the Cazenovia Horse Show and the St. Lawrence Horse Show. Men's Hockey defeated RPI 4-3 as they opened their ECAC slate on the road on Friday.

Fall Student-Athletes Earn Liberty League All-Academic Honors

A total of 78 St. Lawrence fall sport student-athletes earned Liberty League All-Academic honors in their respective sports. To be recognized as a member of the All-Academic team, a student-athlete must be a sophomore or higher in class standing and enrolled full time with a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.30.

Celebrating Diwali with Hands-on Learning

Interdisciplinary hands-on learning opportunities define the St. Lawrence liberal arts experience and our students wouldn’t have it any other way! Students recently made diya (small lamps) for Diwali in a collaboration between students in our Religions of South Asia course and students in this semester’s Ceramics class. These courses are being taught by Assistant Professor of Religious Studies Arun Brahmbhatt and Visiting Assistant Professor of Art and Art History Rachael Jones. Tis' The Season of Softball, Baseball, Golf, and Lacrosse!

Jimmy King '26 was named the Individual Champion at the Liberty League Championships, leading Saints men’s golf to a second-place finish at the par-72 Shenendoah Golf Club at Turning Stone on Sunday. There was a playoff to determine the individual champion and Jimmy won on the second playoff hole. Jimmy finished with par on the first hole. Jimmy's opponent hit an errant drive on the second hole, leaving Jimmy with the win and a par.

Judge Murphy '24 tallied six goals and an assist for seven points to lead the third-ranked Saints men's lacrosse team to a 15-10 upset win over fourth-ranked RPI on Saturday afternoon in Troy, New York. With the win, the Saints clinched the second seed in the upcoming Liberty League Tournament and earned regular season co-championship honors, with three teams finishing league play at 6-1. Second to Judge, Daniel Mahoney '27 recorded four goals and two ground balls, while Ted Wilson '26 scored twice.

Two goals each from Liz Evans '24 and Jessica LaPlaca '27 were unfortunately not enough, as the seventh-seeded Saints women's lacrosse team fell 19-6 in the first round of the Liberty League Tournament to William Smith Tuesday.

Both Saints baseball and softball wrapped up their regular seasons with two wins over the weekend. Baseball took two of three games against Clarkson, while softball swept Skidmore. Softball heads to RPI this weekend, hoping to lock down a playoff spot, while baseball engages Clarkson once more in the end-of-season series.

Festival of Science, Scholarship, and Creativity! ❤️🤎

On Friday, we forego regularly scheduled classes to celebrate our students’ academic accomplishments during the Festival of Science, Scholarship, and Creativity. This year, we learned how stress affects metamorphosis in frogs, how students think about sustainability on campus, how retinol has changed our relationship with aging, and how math can help us make better decisions in games like Monopoly or Dungeons and Dragons (among many other fascinating topics). During our annual Dance Showcase, we watch 16 students perform contemporary, jazz, Irish step, and classical pointe numbers. In the Brush Art Gallery, our gallery exhibition focused on “what we hold.” The 12 senior artists featured used a variety of mediums to consider the things in their lives that are hard to let go of—for better or worse.

50th Anniversary of Title IX

In honor of the 50th anniversary of Title IX, Saints Athletics took a look back on the history of what is likely St. Lawrence’s first women’s athletic team. The determination of early basketball teams, nearly 80 years before the passage of Title IX, set in motion a rich and resilient tradition of women’s sports on campus.  Learn more about Saints Athletics history and Title IX.

Global Classrooms 

St. Lawrence students are eager to expand their understanding of people, places, and perspectives—especially through our off-campus study programs. During the 2021-2022 academic year, Laurentians called places like the United Kingdom, Denmark, Kenya, or Spain their home for a semester, immersing themselves in local culture, traditions, and even workplaces. Saints Sweep Opponents and Enter Post-Season

• Women’s Hockey: The Saints earned an at-large bid to the 2025 NCAA Tournament, and will face Penn State in the first round on Thursday, March 13. This is the team’s 11^th at-large bid in program history, and the third since 2017, as the team advanced to the ECAC semifinals this past weekend against Colgate.
• Men’s Track and Field: Junior Nick Lyndaker finished third-place in the 800-meter to wrap up the AARTFC Championships, and has qualified for the NCAA Indoor Championships on March 14-15. He will take part in the 3000-meter and the mile event, for which he is ranked number two in the country.
• Women’s Tennis: With a pair of sweeps this past weekend, the Saints now move to 5-0 on the season and 1-0 in conference play. On Saturday they took down Daemen 7-0 and on Sunday they cruised past Bard 7-0.
• Men’s Tennis: The Scarlet and Brown won both of its games this past weekend, securing a win over Daemen on Saturday before sweeping Bard 7-0 on Sunday.
• Women’s Lacrosse: St. Lawrence picked up their first win of the season, taking down SUNY Canton 13-10 this past Tuesday. Sophomore Jessica LaPlaca led the team with four goals and an assist, while sophomore Kelsey Roth and senior Neve Ley both put up three goals in the win.
• Men’s Lacrosse: The No. 11 Saints breezed past Nazareth on Saturday at SUNY Canton, winning the match 17-5. They improve to 3-1 on the season. Senior Bobby Wells led his team with four goals, as 10 players scored a goal or more in the game.
• Nordic Skiing: Senior Emma Strack finished her skiing career at St. Lawrence placing 18^th in the women’s 20k freestyle at the 2025 NCAA Skiing Championships. This was her fourth consecutive post-season, as she has qualified every single year of her career, and this wraps up the 2025 season for the Saints.
• Alpine Skiing: Senior Kobe Villeneuve placed 19^th in the men’s giant slalom in the NCAA 2025 skiing championships. He recorded a time of 54.90 in the first run, and 1:00.15 in the second run for a total time of 1:55.65 to wrap up his skiing career and the Saints 2025 season.
• Women’s Basketball: Sophomore Elizabeth Flynn was named to the All Liberty League Second Team due to her performance in the 2024-2025 season. She averaged a double-double, averaging 11.7 points a game and being second in the conference in rebounds with her average of 10.2 rebounds a game. She led her team to an overall record of 16-10 and to the first round of the Liberty League playoffs.
• Men’s Basketball: Junior Adam Dudzinski was named to the All Liberty League Second Team while his teammate junior Dan Anderson was named to the All Liberty League Third this past season. Dudzinski led his team in points and rebounds with 14.1 and 6.7 per game, and Anderson averaged 11.0 points a game while also leading the team in three-point field goals made per game with 1.9 and steals with 1.5 per game. Together they led the Saints to a 16-10 record and to the semi-finals in the Liberty League Tournament

Laurentians Welcome Class of 2029 🎉

The Class of 2029 got a glimpse into their future at St. Lawrence during our first admitted students’ open house! The future Laurentians connected with Admissions ambassadors about student life, explored the residence halls they might soon call home, heard first-hand from young alums who found their dream jobs after St. Lawrence, and met professors who could become their mentors. This Month in Athletics!

Twelve Laurentians entered the St. Lawrence Athletics Hall of Fame Friday evening at the 2024 Robert J. Sheldon Induction Ceremony. Congratulations to inductees Manny Brito ’97, Andre White ’97, Greg Sutton ’99, Ali Montacer ’01, Jamal Ballantyne ’02, Ryan Carruth ’02, James Brush ’77, Danielle Giannone ’96, Rachel Barrie McKay ’03, Eric Jones ’10, Wendy Pavlus ’11, and Scott Woodburn. 

St. Lawrence Athletics and Recreation also announced the retirement of Senior Associate Vice President for Athletics Bob Durocher. A member of the athletics department for 35 years, the Canton, New York native has left an indelible mark on the department. He joined as assistant men's and women's soccer coach in 1989 and head men's coach in 1990 before becoming an assistant athletic director in 2000. He was then selected to lead athletics in 2015, and has served in the role ever since. The highlights of his tenure as head of the athletic department include two phases of renovation at Appleton Arena. The first phase included a multi-million dollar renovation of the arena, with the completely donor-funded project resulting in totally renovated player lounges and locker rooms, as well as an updated ice rink and production facilities. Durocher will remain in the position until a successor is selected. A nationwide search will begin immediately. 

Seven members of the men's lacrosse team earned United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (USILA) All-America honors, as announced by the association on Thursday morning. Judge Murphy '24 and Tripp Clark '24 garnered First-Team honors, while Paddy Condon '25 earned Second-Team honors and Caleb Torres '25 earned Third-Team honors. Ben Hutchinson '24, Bobby Wells '25 and Michael Marinello '25 were all selected as Honorable Mention All-Americans.

Saints rowing teams received some accolades from the Liberty League following their season’s culmination. Sophomore Angie Vertullo '26 was awarded First-Team All-Liberty League accolades, while senior Sasha Henderson '24 earned Second-Team honors for the women's rowing team, as announced by the league office on Thursday afternoon. Seniors John Norrgard '24 and Jack Whamond '24 earned First-Team All-Liberty League honors for men’s rowing, while Robert Fusting '24 and Annabella Kennedy '24 earned Second-Team All-Liberty League honors.

Saints tennis programs also saw multiple athletes honored at the conference level. On the men’s side, senior Adam Heilbronner '24 was named a Second Team singles selection, and earned Second Team doubles honors alongside Broderick Pinto '25. Sophomore standouts Angelica Aksdal-Jansen '26 and Molly Jespersen '26 were each honored as All-Liberty League selections for women’s tennis

Reunion Weekend 2024: One for the History Books! ❤️🤎

Reunion Weekend 2024 was one for the history books! We celebrated the 50th anniversary of the Kenya Semester Program. We welcomed the "Great 8" back to campus (the classes of 1978 through 1985) for their 40th and 45th Reunion milestones. We sipped Scarlet & Brown Ale and 1856 Lager courtesy of Weird Window Brewing, honored our recent Athletic Hall of Famers, and made new memories with our favorite people in our favorite place.

This Week in Athletics!

Men’s lacrosse qualified for the NCAA tournament via an at-large bid after completing their season as Liberty League semifinalists. The Saints had their best start in program history at 11-0 and finished the season 14-2 with a share of the regular season title with a 6-1 league record. They will make their way back to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2022 and the third time since 2017, and are headed to Wesleyan to face Plymouth State on Saturday. 

For men’s lacrosse major awards, Judge Murphy '24 was named the Liberty League Offensive Player of the Year, while Daniel Mahoney '27 was named the Rookie of the Year. 7 Saints earned All-League accolades and head coach Mike Mahoney '93 earned Coach of the Year honors.

Women’s lacrosse defender Haley Sundstrom '25 earned Second-Team All-Liberty League honors, while midfielder Neve Ley '25 earned Honorable Mention accolades for the women's lacrosse team, as announced by the league office on Tuesday morning.

After earning their 14th straight Intercollegic Horse Shows Competition (IHSA) Regional title, the riding team advanced to nationals as a team this past week, finishing fourth overall. After earning Reserve Champion honors at Zones, the Saints competed against the 16 best programs, representing the 353 competing schools.

In the men’s outdoor track and field season, Zach Jaworski '25, Nick Lyndaker '26 and Patrick Russell '26 had all-conference performances at the outdoor track and field championships this past weekend. St. Lawrence finished fifth overall. The Saints now head to regionals with many athletes qualified.

Women’s track and field saw Emma Palumbo '25 and Alli Sibold '24 earn all-Liberty League honors at the outdoor track and field championship, with Alli getting an honorable mention in the 1500 meter race and Emma taking second-team honors in the 3000 meter steeplechase. The Saints will also head to regionals beginning next week.
