SLU Projects for Peace

ST. LAWRENCE UNIVERSITY 2027 PROJECTS FOR PEACE STUDENT GRANT COMPETITION

WHO CAN APPLY? ALL SLU STUDENTS, including seniors, are eligible to submit proposals to the 2027 Projects for Peace (PFP) Program, which provides $10,000 grants for “grassroots” projects to promote peace and address the root causes of conflict. Projects can be located in the US or anywhere around the world, but must be implemented during the summer of 2027. Awardees must also submit a final report in mid-September.

WHAT KIND OF PROJECTS ARE FUNDED?

2026 SLU PROJECT FOR PEACE  Breaking the Cycle: Efficient Stoves for Health, Equality, and Peace in Guatemala

SLU student grantee Jimena Galeano Reyes '28 partnered with StoveTeam International to install 34 efficient cookstoves in rural Guatemalan households. Her project sought to address the interconnected challenges of indoor air pollution, deforestation, economic strain, and gender-based inequality that disproportionately impact women and children. Jimena was involved in every aspect of the project--installing stove, interviewing families, taking photos and videos, and creating educational workshop materials.  According to Jimena, “This project contributes to peace by breaking down one of the most invisible but pervasive forms of suffering in rural Guatemala. In a short period of time, 34 families now breathe cleaner air, face fewer burns, and spend significantly less time collecting firewood. Now, their time can be redirected towards education, income generation, and community participation."

HOW DO I APPLY? Proposals must be emailed to Carol Smith in the Campus Grants Office by Monday, January 11, 2027, and should include a narrative of 2-3 pages that describes the need the project will address, project background, project implementation plan, and anticipated results. A 1-page budget is also required. You can use these templates for the proposal narrative and budget , and these detailed instructions from the Middlebury Projects for Peace Program. Committee members (listed below) are happy to answer any questions, and student OCIP interns in the Grants Office are also available to help interested applicants!

HOW ARE PROPOSALS SELECTED? The SLU PFP Committee will review proposals in January and select two projects to submit to the PFP Program by February 3. The winning SLU proposal will be funded at $10,000, and the alternate proposal will be considered by the Projects for Peace Program. Final awards will be announced in late March 2027.
