248 SPTP: Introduction to Volcanism

The course is designed to present the basic principles of volcanic eruptions, the various styles of eruption, and the impact of eruptions on the global environment and human activity. We will also investigate the hazards associated with various styles of volcanic activity. Students will gain an understanding of the fundamental scientific principles behind the relationship between the Earth’s volcanic activity and interactions with the biosphere, hydrosphere, and atmosphere. The laboratory portion of the course involves both theoretical and practical assessments of volcanic phenomena.
