In partnership with the Alumni Executive Council, the University continues "Laurentians Learn," a series of webinars aimed at expanding learning opportunities from faculty, staff, students, alumni, and parents on important and interesting topics. Just us this month for:

Corruption and Populism in Europe: Insights from SLU’s Partnership with the U.S. Department of State with Dr. Mert Kartal, Associate Professor of Political Science

What drives persistent corruption and the growing support for far-right populism in Europe, and how can collaboration between universities and government agencies deepen our understanding of these challenges?  This session brings together faculty and student researchers involved in St. Lawrence’s Diplomacy Lab partnership with the U.S. Department of State in Fall 2023 and Fall 2024. Dr. Mert Kartal (Department of Political Science) will be joined by SLU alumna Emma Birkitt ’24  (currently a JD candidate at Cornell Law School) and SLU senior Emma Cross ’26. They will present key findings from their research on recent trends in democratic governance in Europe. Their discussion will focus on the causes behind rising corruption and public support for far-right populist movements across the continent. The panelists will also share their experiences working with the State Department and reflect on how applied research opportunities in political science prepare Laurentians for careers in international affairs, law, and public service.
