Policies and Classroom Contracts

Monday, August 26th, 1-2pm, Frost-Ferguson Room (ODY)

What ground rules do you want to set for your classroom?  What are the best practices for developing agreements between professor and students (and between students) about classroom expectations?  This workshop is aimed at helping faculty develop their classroom policies and design activities for the first week of classes to help build classroom community and set clear expectations for constructive disagreement.

Grant Seeking for Early Career Faculty

Friday, September 6th, 12-1pm (Location TBD)

Join Carol Smith (Senior Officer, Grants Office) to discuss grant-seeking opportunities for early career faculty to support teaching and research.  Open to faculty across all disciplines, this session will help you identify ways in which grant-seeking could support your teaching and scholarship, while also connecting you with resources on campus to help you develop grant applications.  Lunch will be provided!

Productive Disagreement

Friday, September 13th, 1-2pm, Frost-Ferguson Room (ODY)

As professors, we are used to intellectual disagreement, but for most of our students, this is a skill that needs to be learned.  This workshop will focus on how we can teach students to disagree productively, including both how to set classroom expectations ahead of time, and how to manage disagreement and debate as it arises.

Tutorial Programs - TAs for Course Credit

Friday, September 27th, 1-2pm, Frost-Ferguson Room (ODY)

Teaching Assistantships are valuable for faculty and students alike - they provide opportunities for the students to learn through teaching, provide additional support for students in the class, showcase exciting opportunities for students as they continue their studies in a field, and can help with faculty workloads.  This workshop will introduce a model for Teaching Assistantships for course credit, extending opportunities to be a TA to departments that are not able to hire TAs.

Reacting to Disruption and Disagreement

Friday, October 11th, 1-2pm, Frost-Ferguson Room (ODY)

Election season is in full swing, and many of our students (like ourselves!) care deeply about their political convictions.  Such convictions can come into our classroom in productive and in various disruptive ways.  This workshop and discussion will focus on best practices for responding to such disruptions and give faculty a chance to 'check-in' on their classroom policies and environments ahead of the election.

Advising as Teaching

Friday, October 25th, 1-2pm, Frost-Ferguson Room (ODY)

In talking about advising, we often focus on what we need to know to be a good advisor, such as departmental curricula, distribution requirements, campus resources, and career options.  Advising, however, is another venue for teaching.  This workshop will help faculty think through their goals in advising, and how to achieve those goals with an advising pedagogy grounded in their own style for interacting with students.

Preparing for the Day After

Monday, November 4th, 3-4pm, Frost-Ferguson Room (ODY)

In this informal discussion, we will look ahead to class on the day(s) after the election.  How might students be feeling and responding in the classroom?  How should we approach the range of responses our students might have?  What kinds of scenarios do we think are likely, and how can we be prepared to respond?

Celebrating and Looking Ahead

Friday, December 6th, 1-2pm, Frost-Ferguson Room (ODY)

The semester is just about at its end!  Join CITA for a celebration of our teaching successes and a brief workshop on lessons learned in our own teaching this semester.
