    Brenda Papineau Named St. Lawrence University's Director of Native American Affairs

    St. Lawrence University has named Brenda Papineau director of Native American Affairs. Papineau, a member of the St. Regis Mohawk Tribe, graduated from St. Lawrence with a bachelor’s degree in sociology in 2002, a master’s in counseling and human development in 2006, and a master’s in educational leadership in 2015.

    Each One Inspired: Haudenosaunee Art Across the Homelands from the New York State Museum

    - Richard F. Brush Art Gallery The St. Lawrence University Richard F. Brush Art Gallery will present an exhibition showcasing the artwork of 53 contemporary artworks by Haudenosaunee artists from all six Haudenosaunee Nations beginning Monday, Oct. 17 through Saturday, Dec. 10.

    Weekend Victories for the Saints

    Over the weekend, Skating Saints forward Greg Lapointe '25 scored a hat trick for a four-goal weekend as three other Saints tallied double-digit points during a 5-4 victory over Princeton University. The wins continued with Maggie Wenger winning 100 and 200 freestyles in a loaded Don Richards Swim Invite at RIT.  During the Saints Track and Field Holiday Relays, the women's team won the distance medley relay while the men's team won six events to capture the team title in the season opener. Women's basketball secured a 58-50 victory over Union and  men's basketball defeated Union 74-69 as women's ice hockey skated to a 4-2 victory over Dartmouth.     Saints Earn Accolades and Secure Shutout Wins

    Men’s Cross Country—Junior Nick Lyndaker was named USTFCCCA National Athlete of the Week and Liberty League Performer of the Week following running to a first-place finish at the Hamilton Short Course Invitational. He had a personal best time in the 5k run, winning the race by 21 seconds.

    Football—The Saints took home the Hoffman Cup with a victory over Norwich Friday, bringing the Cup back to the North Country by a 20-9 final score. The win marked the fourth-straight Hoffman Cup win for the Saints and improved their record to 1-1 for the season.

    Women’s Soccer—Darcie McDonough was named Liberty League Co-Defensive Performer of the Week after leading the Saints to a 2-0 record. The senior netminder stopped two shots in a 1-0 victory at SUNY Geneseo on Wednesday, then on Saturday did the same, stopping both shots she faced in a 4-0 win over Oswego State.

    Women’s Cross Country—First-year Avery Blanchard was named Liberty League Rookie of the Week for her performance at Hamilton, running for a time of 14:59 and a fifth-place finish in the 4k race. 

    Women’s Hockey—Senior forward and alternate captain Abby Hustler was named a Preseason All-ECAC Hockey selection, as announced by the league office on Monday morning. Hustler led the Scarlet and Brown with 24 goals and 31 assists for 55 points on the season. She tallied 12 power-play goals and five game-winners.

    Making a Difference One Plate at a Time

    Every week, nearly two dozen St. Lawrence students come together to prep, cook, deliver, and serve food to local community members in need. These volunteers are part of one of the University’s most unique and impactful student organizations, Campus Kitchens, whose mission is twofold: reduce food insecurity as well as food waste on campus and in the greater Canton community.

    Exhibition: Mulyana-Fragile Ecologies

    - Richard F. Brush Art Gallery Explore the final week of the "Fragile Ecologies," exhibition featuring two life-size, hand-knit and crocheted costumes, several Mogus (monster) creatures, and a series of sumptuously knit coral islands.

    Letter-Writing Event: “Dear North Country”

    - Ireland Lounge, Noble Center The Richard F. Brush Art Gallery and the English department are hosting “Dear North Country,” an in-person letter-writing event. The event is part of an international project called "Make Visible"–an ongoing, community-led project developed by New Zealand artist, curator, and activist Shannon Novak.

    Saints Clinch Liberty League Playoffs 

    • Men’s Basketball: The Saints secured a Liberty League playoff berth with a Friday night victory over Skidmore. Junior Adam Dudzinski led the team with 18 points, while junior Dan Anderson added 10. St. Lawrence now turns its focus to tonight’s first-round matchup against third-seeded Vassar on the road.
    • Women’s Basketball: St. Lawrence closed out the regular season with a commanding 62-40 win over RPI, clinching the fifth seed in the Liberty League playoffs. Junior Jackie Malley drained five three-pointers en route to 17 points, while sophomore Elizabeth Flynn contributed 10 rebounds and nine points. The Saints will travel to RIT on Tuesday night for a win-or-go-home first-round game.
    • Women’s Tennis: The Saints extended their winning streak to three with a 5-2 home victory over Rochester on Sunday afternoon. A sweep in doubles play and strong singles performances from junior Molly Jesperson and first-year Eleanor McDermed led the way in a complete team effort.
    • Men’s Hockey: Senior captain Mason Waite has been nominated for the 2025 ECAC Hockey Scholar-Athlete of the Year Award, as announced by the conference on Thursday. The award recognizes the male ECAC student-athlete who best exemplifies leadership, academic excellence, and community involvement. Waite, a three-time ECAC All-Academic Teamselection, is set to earn the honor for a fourth time when the 2025 recipients are announced.

    St. Lawrence student athletes made the most of their summer in Canton. Between practice sessions and a demanding compressed academic schedule, they took advantage of opportunities to help them stay on track for the fall sports season. 

    12-Hour Shift: Combating COVID-19 One Shot at a Time
    For Curtis Amory '23, working for St. Lawrence Emergency Medical Services (EMS) in fall 2020, was difficult but rewarding.  After experiencing firsthand the damage COVID-19 can do, he remained committed to helping the North Country by working at a vaccination clinic.

    Skating Saints Defeat Clarkson in Exhibition Contest; Fall Sports Continue 

    In their first game since the ECAC Championship, the men's ice hockey team defeated 19th ranked Clarkson 3 - 0 in an exhibition contest on Saturday at Cheel Arena. The Saturday wins continued with the field hockey team securing its first Liberty League win of the season by defeating RPI 2-1 at home.

    On Friday, the Esports Overwatch team topped Lackawanna 3-0 for their first win of the season while women's ice hockey defeated Syracuse  4-1 at Appleton.  Last week, Lillian Sullivan '23 and Caitlyn Avery '23 won their doubles and singles matches to lead women's tennis to a 7-2 win over SUNY Oneonta at home.

    Wind Ensemble Live and In-Person Crossing Barriers Concert

    - Peterson-Kermani Performance Hall The St. Lawrence Wind Ensemble, directed by Theresa Witmer, will perform a variety of music from the southern shores of New Zealand, the Caribbean, Argentina, the British Isles, and more. This in-person event is free, open to the public, and available via live stream.

    100th Candlelight Service

    - Gunnison Memorial Chapel For the last century, the Candlelight Service has been a cornerstone of the St. Lawrence experience and the holiday season in the North Country. The service offers a pause for reflection before final exams and marks the end of the fall semester and the approaching turn of the calendar year. The theme for this year's event is "Comfort and Joy."

    Wenger '24 Shatters Swim Record; Winter Sports Continue

    Maggie Wenger ’24 broke a 1978 St. Lawrence program record when she won the 200-yard freestyle (1:55.92) during the six-team Don Richards Swimming and Diving Invitational at RIT on Saturday. Over the weekend, Men’s Squash swept Colgate, Hamilton, and Wesleyan 9-0 while Women’s Squash defeated Colgate 8-1 and Hamilton 6-3. Men’s Hockey defeated Colgate 4-3 at Appleton Arena while Women's Track and Field opened their season by taking home the team title at the Holiday Relays and Men's Track and Field secured five event wins at the five-team meet. After defeating Union 62-58 in their conference opener, Women’s Basketball defeated Skidmore 73-62 while Men’s Basketball edged Skidmore 58-57 in a close Liberty League contest.
