Weekend Victories for the Saints

Over the weekend, Saints women's tennis wrapped its regular season with a 7-2 win over William Smith after dominating Ithaca 7-2. The wins for the Scarlet and Brown continued with men's tennis defeating Ithaca 8-1 on the road while men's rowing Varsity 8 placed first at the Skidmore Sprints. During the University of Rochester Alumni Meet, Nicholas Lyndaker '26 won the 1500m, Michael Skutt '24 won the 5000m, George Gowdy '23 won the 10,000m, and Eric Geier '23 won the 110m hurdles for the men's track and field team while Haylei Coolican '23 won the 5000m for the women's team. Last week, the Saints secured local rival wins as women's lacrosse topped Clarkson 15-12 and softball beat Potsdam 6-4. For up-to-date schedules, news, and scores visit SaintsAthletics.com.

Kaleidoscope 2023

The St. Lawrence community filled Eben Holden last week in celebration of Kaleidoscope, the annual showcase of international fare, from traditional foods, music, and dancing to spoken word, and other presentations by our talented students—closing out an eventful World Languages Week! This Month in Athletics!

Twelve Laurentians entered the St. Lawrence Athletics Hall of Fame Friday evening at the 2024 Robert J. Sheldon Induction Ceremony. Congratulations to inductees Manny Brito ’97, Andre White ’97, Greg Sutton ’99, Ali Montacer ’01, Jamal Ballantyne ’02, Ryan Carruth ’02, James Brush ’77, Danielle Giannone ’96, Rachel Barrie McKay ’03, Eric Jones ’10, Wendy Pavlus ’11, and Scott Woodburn. 

St. Lawrence Athletics and Recreation also announced the retirement of Senior Associate Vice President for Athletics Bob Durocher. A member of the athletics department for 35 years, the Canton, New York native has left an indelible mark on the department. He joined as assistant men's and women's soccer coach in 1989 and head men's coach in 1990 before becoming an assistant athletic director in 2000. He was then selected to lead athletics in 2015, and has served in the role ever since. The highlights of his tenure as head of the athletic department include two phases of renovation at Appleton Arena. The first phase included a multi-million dollar renovation of the arena, with the completely donor-funded project resulting in totally renovated player lounges and locker rooms, as well as an updated ice rink and production facilities. Durocher will remain in the position until a successor is selected. A nationwide search will begin immediately. 

Seven members of the men's lacrosse team earned United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (USILA) All-America honors, as announced by the association on Thursday morning. Judge Murphy '24 and Tripp Clark '24 garnered First-Team honors, while Paddy Condon '25 earned Second-Team honors and Caleb Torres '25 earned Third-Team honors. Ben Hutchinson '24, Bobby Wells '25 and Michael Marinello '25 were all selected as Honorable Mention All-Americans.

Saints rowing teams received some accolades from the Liberty League following their season’s culmination. Sophomore Angie Vertullo '26 was awarded First-Team All-Liberty League accolades, while senior Sasha Henderson '24 earned Second-Team honors for the women's rowing team, as announced by the league office on Thursday afternoon. Seniors John Norrgard '24 and Jack Whamond '24 earned First-Team All-Liberty League honors for men’s rowing, while Robert Fusting '24 and Annabella Kennedy '24 earned Second-Team All-Liberty League honors.

Saints tennis programs also saw multiple athletes honored at the conference level. On the men’s side, senior Adam Heilbronner '24 was named a Second Team singles selection, and earned Second Team doubles honors alongside Broderick Pinto '25. Sophomore standouts Angelica Aksdal-Jansen '26 and Molly Jespersen '26 were each honored as All-Liberty League selections for women’s tennis

Reunion Weekend 2024: One for the History Books! ❤️🤎

Reunion Weekend 2024 was one for the history books! We celebrated the 50th anniversary of the Kenya Semester Program. We welcomed the "Great 8" back to campus (the classes of 1978 through 1985) for their 40th and 45th Reunion milestones. We sipped Scarlet & Brown Ale and 1856 Lager courtesy of Weird Window Brewing, honored our recent Athletic Hall of Famers, and made new memories with our favorite people in our favorite place.

World Languages Week

Each November, St. Lawrence joins the U.S. Department of State and U.S. Department of Education in celebrating international education and exchange. This includes celebrating the contributions and impact of international students to St. Lawrence's campus and promoting awareness about opportunities to study off-campus. Now through November 21, student clubs and organizations, offices on-campus and other campus community members will offer a robust range of activities that are open to all. Saints Earn Academic Honors and Break Athletic Records

• Men’s Squash: It was a historic day for the squash program Sunday. Senior Lewis Anderson secured his record-breaking 63rd career win in the Saints' 7-2 loss at the No. 17-ranked Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland–the most victories by a single athlete in Saints men’s squash program history. Anderson, who entered the matchup tied with Moustafa Bayoumy '18 for career wins, took on Matthew Wang in the number one spot for the Scarlet and Brown. The senior wasted little time breaking the record, defeating his opponent 11-4, 11-3, 11-7. Anderson now holds a 63-8 career record, with the full season ahead to expand his record.  
• Men’s Cross-Country: After a strong performance at the Mideast Regional, junior Nick Lyndaker will represent men's cross country at the NCAA championship for the third year in a row. Lyndaker punched his ticket to the event with an eighth-place finish at the Mideast Regional on Saturday at Connecticut College. He earned Mideast all-Region honors in the process. 
• Women’s Cross-Country:  Senior McKenna Allardi and first-year Avery Blanchard qualified for the NCAA women's championship as individual runners, and will now head to Terre Haute, Indiana for the event next weekend. Allardi heads to nationals in her first season as a member of the cross country team. She qualified as an individual after placing 39th overall in the Mideast Regional on Saturday, posting a time of 22:41.8 in the event. Blanchard crossed the line in 47th place with a time of 22:49.2.  
• Riding: Saints Riding was named the High Point Team in back-to-back days, claiming their fifth and sixth wins of the year at the St. Lawrence University Shows on Nov. 16-17. On Saturday, the Scarlet and Brown earned 39 points to outpace Syracuse University, where junior Harper Eskey earned High Point Rider honors with wins in Open Fences and Open Flat. The team scored three class wins on the day, as well as three second-place finishes. On Sunday, the Saints posted 44 points –12 points ahead of Ottawa, who was the Reserve High Point team for the second day. First-year Dalton Pace was named the High Point Rider, while junior Annie Kammer was awarded Reserve High Point Rider honors. 
• Volleyball: Sophomore Araiza Acum-Santos received a Liberty League honorable mention as part of the conference's end of season all-league awards. Acum-Santos finished the season with improvements in nearly all her stat lines over her first-year season. She had 2.92 kills per set, 260 kills total, adding 14 assists and 11 service aces to those totals. She was also recently named to the Liberty League all-academic team. 
• Football: Senior tight-end Oskar Baldwin earned First-Team All-Liberty League honors, while senior Liam Perkins and junior Ryan Surhoff earned a spot on the Second Team. Seniors Daniel Lawther and Daniel George, as well as junior Clayton Fogler, picked up Honorable Mention honors, the conference office announced Tuesday afternoon. Baldwin played in all nine games for the Saints this season and led the team in receptions with 40 catches for 491 yards, averaging 47.89 yards per game. 
• Saints Athletes: 99 St. Lawrence fall sport student-athletes earned Liberty League All-Academic honors in their respective sports, the Liberty League Commissioner Tracy King announced Thursday morning. In total, 755 fall sport student-athletes have qualified for the league's All-Academic Teams in their respective sports. 
• Men’s Hockey: Tickets are now available to purchase here for the best rivalry in college hockey on January 24, when St. Lawrence faces off against the Clarkson Golden Knights in Appleton Arena.

Local Students Pack Appleton for Route 11 Rivalry 

On Wednesday, over 3,000 students from local schools packed the stands at Appleton Arena for the Route 11 Rivalry matchup between St. Lawrence and Clarkson. The energy was electric as the crowd cheered on our Saints in this thrilling North Country tradition!! Thanks to everyone for bringing the scarlet and brown spirit and  helping us shatter the women’s hockey attendance record! Watch a video of the matchup on the new St. Lawrence TikTok account. 

On November 15, President Morris sent a message to the St. Lawrence community about the passing of Clara Simmons, who dedicated 40 years of service to our Facilities Operations team before her retirement in 2009. Read the Message. 

COVID-19 Campus Masking Update

Academic Affairs and Student Life sent a message to the community on Monday, Feb. 14 announcing that the University has removed masking requirements for vaccinated students in residence halls effectively immediately. The University continues to require masks in all other campus locations, including classrooms and indoor public spaces. Read the Message. 

Leading with Love: Spirituals and Civil Rights Movement Songs

During this virtual program, President Kathryn Morris invites all Laurentians to participate in this week’s “Leading with Love: MLK in Black History Month” virtual events. Her statements in this year’s virtual recorded celebration of  Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. are featured alongside spirituals and civil rights songs played on the pipe organ by Musician-in-Residence Sondra Goldsmith Proctor, and commentary from University Chaplain the Rev. Top Liberty League Times for Men's Track and Field; WInter Sports Continue

During the Fasttrack National Invite, Saints men’s track and field’s Timothy Boyce ’25 won the 800 meters, securing the top time in the Liberty League, and one of the top times in the country for a first-year student-athlete, while women’s track and fields’ Alli Sibold ’25, Katherine Sheehy ’23,  Emma Palumbo ’25 were the top Division III finishers in their respective events. Over the weekend, women’s basketball defeated RPI 64-59 while women’s ice hockey skated to a 1-1 tie with Brown, and men’s basketball beat Ithaca 80-79 in a close contest. During the Dartmouth College Carnival on Saturday, Tommy Kenosh '23 and Ava Mattsson '22 each won a slalom run for the Saints Alpine ski team, and last week, men’s tennis topped Saint Michael’s College 5-4 at home. Skating Saints Claire Dudley '22 was recently nominated for the 2022 Mandi Schwartz Student-Athlete of the Year award which recognizes leaders on athletic teams, in the classroom, and in the community. For up-to-date schedules, news, and scores. Spectator Policy Update

St. Lawrence Athletics shared their commitment to adhering to CDC, St. Lawrence County, NCAA SSI, and St. Lawrence University COVID-19 recommendations and protocols. Face coverings are required for all spectators at indoor athletic facilities including home Saints athletic events. Read the policy. 

Understanding Barriers to Outdoor Recreation

Students in Sociology 101: Principles of Sociology left the traditional classroom behind to try the winter sports they were least familiar with to gain a better understanding of the barriers to outdoor recreation that many face. Under the guidance of Assistant Professor of Sociology Alanna Gillis, and with the support of the Outdoor Program, the hands-on experience of grappling with an unfamiliar activity inspired follow-up conversations and sociological analyses. View the photo on the St. Lawrence Instagram account.

Saints Dominate Spring Matchups

Saints men’s lacrosse defeated Vassarr 19-7 after beating Middlebury 18-11 in an on-the-road matchup that landed Mark Mahoney ’22 a number six spot on ESPN’s Sports Center Top 10 Sports Plays in April. Women’s lacrosse dominated RPI 17-3 to move into second place in the Liberty Leagues standings while women’s tennis secured a 7-2 win over RIT and men’s tennis beat Union 5-4. Softball defeated Clarkson 8-6 while several members of the men's and women's track and field teams secured top performances during the Upstate Alternative Meet in Cortland and the Smashing Saints Esports team ended their season in the Sweet 16 of the ECAC playoffs. For up-to-date schedules, news, and scores visit SaintsAthletics.com.
