    Astronomers Attend ASNY Fall Meeting

    Simon Kouka and Doukta Visited Our Campus!

    Associate Professor and Co-Chair World Languages, Cultures, and Media Department Eloise Brezault hosted two renowned Senegalese artists whose work has been nourished by political and social activism to keep democracy alive in Senegal. The artists spent two days on campus, visiting classes and speaking with students about the importance of art and activism in their work.

    - Hepburn 128 The Public Speaking Contest is an opportunity for students to show off their verbal communication abilities with the possibility of earning a cash prize. Participants will give extemporaneous speeches from any class on any topic, demonstrating that communication skills are essential across disciplines.

    - Pickens Hall, Heuvelton, NY and Gunnison Memoral Chapel The Laurentian Singers presents two performances of their "Winter Concert." Saturday, December 2, 7 p.m. in Pickens Hall, Heuvelton, NY Sunday, December 3, 7 p.m. on Campus in Gunnison Memoral Chapel Their program will include music by Hyo-Won Woo, B.E. Boykin, Jake Runestad, Sarah Quartet and others.

    Scholar-Athlete Classroom Wins!

    This past week the Saints have been excelling beyond the soccer field. Grace Bridge ’24, Mia Cence ’25, Natalie Schock ’25, and Keely Snode ’24 from the women's soccer team have earned a place on the Academic All-District team, recognized by the College Sports Communicators (CSC). In the men's soccer division, Owen Lillis ’25 and Ben Woelfinger ’23 have also secured spots on the CSC Academic All-District team. These scholar-athletes hold a minimum cumulative grade-point average of 3.5, a sophomore academic standing or higher, and have actively contributed to at least 50% of the teams contests.

    The Laurentian Network In Action!

    During the mid-semester break, students explored possible career paths, peered into cutting-edge fields, and got to experience the nearby, vibrant city of Burlington, Vermont through SLU Connect Burlington!  Students engaged in expert panels that provided industry insights from aerospace manufacturing, athletic nutrition, non-profit, healthcare, and other sectors! They even got to step behind the scenes during company site tours of companies including Beta Technologies, UnTapped: All Natural Athletic Fuel, Hula, and Weird Window Brewing.     In recognition of their exemplary accomplishments and steadfast commitment to St. Lawrence University and the North Country community Gina Kingsbury ’04 and Andrew Williams will be honored during this year’s commencement ceremony on Sunday, May 21.     St. Lawrence Named a 2023 Best Value College by The Princeton Review

    Students seeking a great education with excellent career preparation and return on investment will find St. Lawrence University among a select group named to The Princeton Review’s list of “Best Value Colleges” for 2023. The popular rankings publication narrowed down the list to 209 institutions from a total of over 650 surveyed.

    Saints Wrap Spring Seasons, Head to Liberty Leagues

    It was a great weekend to rep the Scarlet and Brown! Saints men's and women's track and field teams each won the Intercollegiate Athletics Twilight Meet on Saturday to wrap up the regular season before heading to the league championships. The victories for the Saints continued with women's tennis heading to the semi-finals after beating Ithaca 5-4,  and women's lacrosse set to compete in the first round of the Liberty League tournament after defeating RIT 11-10  after dominating Nazareth 21-8 last week. Softball defeated Union 5-4  while baseball topped Clarkson 13-11 and 2-0 after defeating SUNY Plattsburgh 9-1 last week. For up-to-date schedules, news, and scores visit SaintsAthletics.com.

    St. Lawrence Students Contribute to U.S. Foreign Policy through Diplomacy Lab

    This fall, six students partnered with senior leadership of the Europe and Eurasian Affairs program at the Foreign Service Institute of the U.S. State Department. Under the guidance of Dr. Mert Kartal, political science students investigated the impact of immigration on the rise of far-right populism in European Union member countries.

    Taming Trash: Students Learn About Waste Management

    This semester, students in the Taming Trash course, taught by Dr. Lori Clark explored waste management through hands-on experiences. The class visited the St. Lawrence compost site, the Cornell Cooperative Extension Anaerobic Digester, and the Development Authority of the North Country Materials Management Facility.

    Saints Earn All-Region Accolades

    • Football: Senior captain and tight-end Oskar Baldwin earned Division 3, Third-Team All-Region honors for Region II. Baldwin, who also earned First-Team All-Liberty League accolades, played in all nine games for the Saints this season and led the team in receptions with 40 catches for 491 yards, averaging 47.89 yards per game.
    • Men’s Soccer: Seniors George Charalambous and Max Mogul, along with sophomore Henry Brown, earned All-Region III Second Team honors for their play this season. Brown, who was named the Liberty League Player of the Year, and earned First Team All-League, emerged as the league's top player this season.
    • Women’s Soccer: Senior captain defender Mia Cence earned All-Region III Third Team honors for her play this season. Cence is the first Saint to be named All-Region since Julia Mulhern '20 and Hannah Arment '20, who earned First Team nods in 2019. Cence, who was a Second Team All-Liberty League selection, played in 15 games this past season and started in 14 of them. The defender was a difference maker on the backline helping the team to a 1.18 team goals against average and five clean sheets.

    Saints Earn Liberty League Titles, Head to Championships

    During the Liberty League Championships in Ithaca, men’s track and field’s Erik Geier ’23 won the 60-meter hurdle to secure the Liberty League title while women's track and field's Kathleen Merchant '22 won the shot putAlpine skiing’s Ava Mattsson ’22 is headed to the NCAAs in Park City, Utah following her performance at the UNH Carnival and the men’s ice hockey team is set to compete in the opening round of the conference playoffs after concluding their regular season with a 3-1 win over Yale 3-1 and a 1-1 tie with Brown. During the ECAC Quarterfinals, women’s ice hockey defeated Yale 4-2 but ultimately fell to the No. 7 ranked team. The riding team won its 12th straight Regional Championship Title by finishing the season with the highest point total from the regular season and women’s tennis opened conference play with a 6-3 win over Union.  Women’s squash dominated Wesleyan 9-0 at the CSA Team Nationals but fell to Middlebury College in the final round. During the Liberty League Semifinals, women’s basketball defeated Skidmore (64-60) and Vassar(80-63) but fell to Ithaca in the championship game on Sunday. For up-to-date schedules, news, and scores.     Wind Ensemble Live and In-Person Crossing Barriers Concert

    - Peterson-Kermani Performance Hall The St. Lawrence Wind Ensemble, directed by Theresa Witmer, will perform a variety of music from the southern shores of New Zealand, the Caribbean, Argentina, the British Isles, and more. This in-person event is free, open to the public, and available via live stream.

    100th Candlelight Service

    - Gunnison Memorial Chapel For the last century, the Candlelight Service has been a cornerstone of the St. Lawrence experience and the holiday season in the North Country. The service offers a pause for reflection before final exams and marks the end of the fall semester and the approaching turn of the calendar year. The theme for this year's event is "Comfort and Joy."

    Wenger '24 Shatters Swim Record; Winter Sports Continue

    Maggie Wenger ’24 broke a 1978 St. Lawrence program record when she won the 200-yard freestyle (1:55.92) during the six-team Don Richards Swimming and Diving Invitational at RIT on Saturday. Over the weekend, Men’s Squash swept Colgate, Hamilton, and Wesleyan 9-0 while Women’s Squash defeated Colgate 8-1 and Hamilton 6-3. Men’s Hockey defeated Colgate 4-3 at Appleton Arena while Women's Track and Field opened their season by taking home the team title at the Holiday Relays and Men's Track and Field secured five event wins at the five-team meet. After defeating Union 62-58 in their conference opener, Women’s Basketball defeated Skidmore 73-62 while Men’s Basketball edged Skidmore 58-57 in a close Liberty League contest.
