  1. Q-Club Meeting

    Speaker: Dr. Gabriel Dorfsman-Hopkins Title: Art of Mathematics and Mathematics of Art Abstract: Mathematical understanding is built in many ways, and among these, illustration has been a companion and tool since the very beginning. Conversely, mathematical ideas have shined light on new avenues of artistic exploration for over a thousand years! In the modern era, there has been an explosion of tools for computer graphics, animation, digital fabrication, 3D printing and more, opening new doors and techniques for anyone trying to explore the intersection of mathematical and artistic ideas. In this talk I want to share my own walk along the boundary of the mathematical and the artistic, showcasing projects which give physical form to the abstract. Some of these create interactive installations to communicate mathematical ideas broadly, while others gave sparks of inspiration to prove new theorems—and often both! This talk should serve as an invitation for students who would like to explore this area with me—including through summer research—as well as a plug for the forthcoming makerspace I am co-founding with Dr. Angstadt. This talk includes joint work with students (Daniel Rostamloo and Shuchang Xu), artists (Merle Maynard and Afroditi Psarra), and folks in industry (Bernat Espigule).

  2. NSF Grant to Fund Study of Ancient South Asian Trade

    Shinu Abraham, associate professor of anthropology, was part of an intercollegiate team of scholars who were awarded a National Science Foundation grant to conduct research into ancient trade and exchange in South Asia and around the Indian Ocean and its relationship to the development of social complexity in the region.

  3. Peace Corps Ranks SLU Second Among Small Schools

    Peace Corps has announced that St. Lawrence University ranked No. 2 among small schools on the agency’s list of 2018 Top Volunteer-Producing Colleges and Universities. This is the fourth consecutive year that St. Lawrence has ranked among the top 25 small schools.

    Capitalizing on St. Lawrence’s Connection to Cornell Law School: Phil Duggan '15

    Phil Duggan ’15 earned his J.D. from Cornell Law School in 2021, thanks to the St. Lawrence University-Cornell Law School Scholarship. While interviewing for his first jobs in the legal field, he found himself returning to his multifaceted St. Lawrence experiences as evidence of his ability to embrace challenges, adapt to new environments, and learn on the fly.

    Members of the Chocolate Passport Project brought the St. Lawrence community together during a hot chocolate tasting to raise awareness about the history, injustice, and sustainability of the chocolate industry related to cocoa.

    Saints Dominate Spring Matchups

    Saints men’s lacrosse defeated Vassarr 19-7 after beating Middlebury 18-11 in an on-the-road matchup that landed Mark Mahoney ’22 a number six spot on ESPN’s Sports Center Top 10 Sports Plays in April. Women’s lacrosse dominated RPI 17-3 to move into second place in the Liberty Leagues standings while women’s tennis secured a 7-2 win over RIT and men’s tennis beat Union 5-4. Softball defeated Clarkson 8-6 while several members of the men's and women's track and field teams secured top performances during the Upstate Alternative Meet in Cortland and the Smashing Saints Esports team ended their season in the Sweet 16 of the ECAC playoffs. For up-to-date schedules, news, and scores visit SaintsAthletics.com.
