On Ice and Court: Victories Propel Teams Forward!

Women’s hockey swept both games in the final regular season weekend of the year, registering a 4-2 win over Harvard University and a 5-0 shutout of Dartmouth College. This earns them a bye to the "ECAC Quarterfinal." The team’s record going into the playoffs is 25-9-0, the program’s highest win total since the 2016-17 season.

Men’s basketball wrapped up their regular season with two wins, downing Skidmore College and Rochester Polytechnic Institute. These wins give the team a second place finish in the "Liberty League" and a first round bye. They face an opponent to be determined Friday evening at Burkman Gymnasium.

Women’s basketball split their last weekend of the season, but a win over Rochester Polytechnic Institute Saturday was enough to secure a first round home game. They finish the season as the four-seed and host No. 5 Union College on Tuesday.

Pedro Yupa and St. Lawrence's Top Ranked Alumni Network!

Pedro Yupa ’25 recognizes the power of St. Lawrence’s top-ranked alumni network, but says he saw a need for networking events that better served Laurentians of color. He was inspired to change that and found a perfect opportunity over mid-semester break. He and fellow members of St. Lawrence University's Men in Color organization worked with Laurentian Engagement to organize a student-alumni meet-up on Saturday, February 17, in Astoria, Queens. 

Yupa Shared, “It wasn’t just a meeting; it was a necessary bridge connecting current students with alumni of color who have successfully navigated the complexities of life at St. Lawrence. It was about building a supportive community where we could openly share experiences, challenges, and achievements.  
 
The importance of this event cannot be overstated. It provided a sense of belonging and inspiration, showing students that success is attainable and that they are supported by a community that understands their unique challenges. It reminded me that there are diverse paths to success and showed me the collective strength of our community.”

This Week in Athletics!

Emma-Sofie Nordström '26 made 72 saves over two games and the women's hockey team qualified for the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) semifinals with a 2-0 series victory over Yale University this past weekend. The Saints will play in the semifinal for the first time since  COVID-19 shortened 2021 playoffs, when they beat Clarkson University in overtime. They'll have a chance for a repeat performance as they play the Golden Knights at Colgate Friday evening with a berth in the ECAC Championship on the line. 

Nick Lyndaker '26 achieved the long-sought goal of breaking the St. Lawrence program record in the mile run during his trot at the All-Atlantic Region Track and Field Conference (AARTFC) indoor championships in Rochester, New York. Lyndaker's time of 4:11.99 edged the Saints' previous program record of 4:12.02 in the mile, which was set by Erik Donohoe in 2008. His time was the fastest in the event out of any competitor from the Liberty League, and gave him a second place overall finish at regionals.

Both tennis teams recorded victories over Ithaca College on the weekend, with the men earning a 6-3 win and the women's team downing the Bombers 7-2. The men's team had two wins at the number one and three spots, while Ariane '27 and Yvette Karera '27 went unbeaten on the day to lead the women's team to victory.

After a season of program record and historic personal-bests, Alli Sibold '24 will have another chance to take the track for the women's track and field team at the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) indoor championships at the Virginia Beach Sports Center in Virginia Beach, Virginia, beginning Friday morning. She enters the event as the second-highest seed in the mile, and the fourth-highest in the 3000m. 

Elizabeth Flynn '27 was named Liberty League Rookie of the Year last Tuesday.  The freshman forward from Brentwood, Tennessee led the Liberty League in rebounds per game with 12.3 and was the only player in the conference to average a double double. Additionally, her 14 double doubles ranked tied for 26th across DIII, and her 12.4 boards per game were the 13th-highest in the NCAA.

27 St. Lawrence winter sport student-athletes earned Liberty League All-Academic honors in their respective sports, as announced by the Liberty League Commissioner Tracy King last week. In total, 383 winter sport student-athletes have qualified for the league's All-Academic teams. To be recognized as a member of the All-Academic team a student-athlete must be a sophomore or higher in class standing with a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.30. Groundbreaking DEI Efforts!

Margaret Kent Bass is one of three honorees included in the interactive exhibition, “Portraying St. Lawrence,” at our Richard F. Brush Art Gallery. The exhibition draws attention to how portraits act as a form of public memory for an institution or community, and how we can expand both who we remember and how we remember those important to our community.  

Bass is recognized for the indelible mark she left on St. Lawrence through her groundbreaking DEI efforts. Bass joined the University as director of multicultural affairs in 1993 and became a member of the English department in 2000. She was appointed associate dean for faculty in 2004 and interim VP and dean of students in 2005-06. Bass received the Owen D. Young Outstanding Faculty Award and the Emily Eaton Hepburn Award for Creative Leadership.

Saints Baseball Sweeps Competition, Saints Spring Sports Continue

Saints baseball swung into the spring season with a sweep–defeating Old Westbury 1-0 and 13-9 during the Russmatt Invitational in Florida. The wins for the Scarlet and Brown continued with Saints men's lacrosse dominating Bates 16-7 and the University of Lynchburg 14-5 at the Mustang Classic in Maryland, as the women's team secured a 14-11 win over University of Rochester at home. Saints esports shut out Bellarmine University 2-0 after defeating Brewton-Parker College 2-0 and Marist College 4-2  last week.  Skating Saints defenseman Luc Salem '24 was named a Second-Team All-ECAC Hockey selection and Abhisheka David '26 and Nick Lynadker '26 were named 2022-23 Liberty League rookies of the year in women's squash and men's indoor track and field. Saints Hit a Winning Streak and Secure First Place Victories

Field Hockey—Junior Caroline Hamilton scored two goals, including a dramatic go-ahead goal in the dying seconds of the game, and senior Cara Vredenburg made 16 saves as field hockey earned a conference victory in the Liberty League opener, 2-1 over Skidmore. The win is St. Lawrence’s third straight victory.

Men’s Rowing—The 2024-25 fall portion of the schedule opened at the Mohawk Fall Classic Regatta in Scotia, N.Y. on Sunday. With five boats in the men's 2V race, St. Lawrence's 'B' boat with first-year Luke Rucolas and senior Sam Sternhagen placed first with a time of 15:00.62.

Women’s Rowing—The 2024-25 fall portion of the schedule opened at the Mohawk Fall Classic Regatta in Scotia, N.Y. on Sunday. The Saints 'A' Varsity 8 rowed to a first-place finish, recording a time of 15:29. 67.

Women’s Hockey—Three different Saints scored, including a first-career goal for first-year Alexia Côté, as eighth-ranked women's hockey opened the 2024-25 season with a 3-0 win over Merrimack in a Friday morning game at Lawler Rink. St. Lawrence moved to 1-0-0 on the season, while Merrimack fell to 0-1-0. Côté took ECAC Hockey Bitcoin Rookie of the Week honors for the performance. 

Men’s Tennis—Senior Edvin Strandberg was the lone Saint to represent men’s tennis at the ITA Northeast Regionals on the campus of Drew University, and advanced to the Round of 16 yesterday with a pair of wins. This morning, Strandberg went to a tiebreak in the opening game losing 6-7 (3) and fell 0-6 in the final game to end his run. The team will be back in action in February.

Math and Everything at St. Lawrence

Last Friday’s Math and Everything event brought together 250 young women from North Country high schools, along with students, faculty, and alumni, for a day of learning and exploration. From career panels to interactive sessions on AI, neuroscience, and more, there was so much to explore. Saints Basketball Dominates Home Court Matchups; Seasons Continue

It was a winning weekend for the Saints! Women's basketball secured a 68-57 win over RIT on Saturday after defeating William Smith 82-59 on Friday and dominating Clarkson 74-47 at home last week while Saints men's basketball beat RIT 88-71 on Saturday after securing a 73-67 win over Hobart on Friday.  The wins for the Scarlet and Brown continued with men's hockey shutting out Brown 6-0 on the road while women's hockey skated to a 3-2 overtime win over Cornell at home. Saints squash wrapped up its 2023 Liberty League Championships on home court this weekend after the women's team secured three sets of 8-0 wins over Vassar, Bard, and Denison before falling to William Smith in the championship match on Sunday while the men's team topped Bard 8-1 and Hobart 5-4  before falling to Rochester on Sunday. For up-to-date schedules, news, and scores visit SaintsAthletics.com.

The International House (I-House) and Asian Students Intercultural Association (A.S.I.A) celebrated Lunar New Year with a teatime spent sharing dumplings and laughs, crafting origami rabbits, and enjoying music with friends to ring in a prosperous year ahead. Saints Head to Divisional Championships!

Men’s Cross Country: Seniors Nick Lyndaker and Patrick Russell earned individual bids to the NCAA Division III Championship after Lyndaker placed second and Russell 25th at the Mideast Regional on their home course in Canton, N.Y. The NCAA announced the qualifiers Sunday afternoon, sending both Saints to South Carolina next weekend.

Women’s Cross Country: Sophomore Avery Blanchard qualified for the NCAA Division III Championship with a 21st-place finish in 22:37.1 at the Mideast Regional, the best regional result of her career. She stayed steady through a crowded field to secure one of the region’s individual spots.

Football: Eight Saints earned All-Liberty League honors. Senior Nicholas Huhtala, junior Ryan Donovan, senior Ryan Surhoff, and senior Clayton Fogler were named Second Team, while senior Will Lederman, sophomore Aidan Hays, junior Brennan Twombly, and sophomore Sam Arbaugh earned Honorable Mention. Huhtala led SLU with 45 receptions for 567 yards and six touchdowns, highlighted by a career-best 176-yard performance against Rochester on Saturday, where the Saints ended their season with a big win over the Yellowjackets.

Riding: St. Lawrence closed the fall with two home shows at the Appleton Riding Hall. The Saints were Reserve High Point Team on Saturday with five blue ribbons, then claimed High Point Team honors Sunday. Senior Lauren Trexler earned High Point Rider with wins in Intermediate Fences and Limit Flat, and senior Harper Eskey was Reserve High Point Rider after a four-person ride off.

Men’s Hockey: The St. Lawrence University men's program, in partnership with the Hockey Alumni Association, inducted Tom O'Connor '75, P'12, and the late Ray Shero '84 into the Legends of Appleton. The program also celebrated with the Ray Shero '84 Memorial Alumni Game in front of the Appleton Arena faithful. Before the contest, O'Connor and his family dropped the ceremonial first puck, and both O'Connor and Shero were honored during the first intermission in front of a packed Appleton Arena.

100 Years of Men's Hockey 💯

Saints Upset Rivals and Display Dominance

• Women’s Hockey: No. 7 ranked Saints took down No. 9 Clarkson Friday night in a high-scoring 6-5 conference game. Graduate student Anna Segedi led the way with two goals, while graduate student Claire Tyo netted three assists in the effort. Junior Emma-Sofie Nordstrum had 33 saves in the first game of the Route 11 rivalry, as the Saints split the weekend with Clarkson.
• Men’s Hockey: In the Route 11 Rivalry this weekend, juniors Isack Bandu and Jan Lasak each scored a goal to upset No. 20 Clarkson 2-1 Saturday night in conference play. Sophomore Mason Kucenski stopped 26 shots as the Saints split the weekend with their regional foes. 
• Nordic Skiing: Senior Emma Strack is participating in the 2025 FIS Nordic Junior/U23 Cross-Country World Ski Championships in Schilpario, Italy. She will go through a short training camp In Seefeld, Austria before taking part in the championships. Strack will be competing in the classic sprint on February 4, and the classic mass-start 20k on February 6, where she will look to become a world champion.
• Men’s Basketball: The Saints swept this weekend on the road going 2-0. First, they took on Hobart Friday Night, winning 58-52 with four players reaching double digits in points. In front was sophomore Troy McPherson, who had 13 points off the bench. Saturday afternoon the Saints beat RIT 91-76, which is the highest team total of points since the 2018-2019 season.
• Women’s Basketball: The Saints dominated Willam Smith 64-46 Friday night on the road in Geneva. Junior Caelan McHarney put up a career-high of 16 points in just 19 minutes, while sophomore Elizabeth Flynn also put up 12 points.
• Track-and-Field: Both the men’s and women’s teams put on strong performances at the St. Lawrence Invitational on Saturday afternoon. The men’s team grabbed first place in a dominant performance as their total team score was 67.5 points ahead of second-place Utica. On the women’s side, the Saints placed second overall thanks to multiple strong outings, including freshman Avery Blanchard placing first in the mile event, and sophomore Quinn Sirgany placing first in the 800-meter. The relay team of junior Cameran Stone, junior Adriana Cecchetelli, first-year Avery Blanchard, and sophomore Quinn Sirgany placed first in the distance medley with a time of 13:05.70, which allows them to go to regionals.
• Squash: First-year Gregory Malsang won his quarterfinal match of the Molloy East to set the tone for both the men’s and women’s squash teams at the CSA Individual Nationals at Open Squash in New York, N.Y. He faced Bates’ Alec Spiro, where he swept the match 11-6, 11-2, and 11-6 and made it to the semifinals where he unfortunately lost to Huzaifa Ibrahim from Trinity. On the women’s side, first-year Angel Otshabeng made her debut against Georgetown’s Rachel Mashek in the quarterfinal of the Holleran West Bracket. She put up a fight but ultimately lost 11-4, 11-8, and 11-7.

Both the women’s and men’s teams skated away with a win at Clarkson’s Cheel Arena, and Saints Nation showed up loud and proud as per usual in the Marsh Pit. On Thursday, January 23, President Morris sent a message to the St. Lawrence community about the passing of Professor Emeritus of History Jonathan Rossie. Jonathan was a beloved member of the faculty for 32 years, during which he inspired generations of students and left an enduring legacy at St. Lawrence University. Read the message.

Celebrating 19 Years of Kaleidoscope! 🎉

Last week, the St. Lawrence community came together to celebrate 19 years of Kaleidoscope! Started in 2006 by Victor Kai-Rogers '08 from Freetown, Sierra Leone, the annual tradition celebrates the many cultures represented in our community through performance and art. Hosted by the I-House and International Student Services, the event wrapped up World Languages Week with an exciting showcase of global music, dance, fashion, and food. 

A heartfelt thank you to all who made this celebration possible, but especially to those who took the stage to share their customs and traditions with us. ❤️🤎

Saints Reach Milestones and Sweep Opponents

• Men’s Lacrosse: Head coach Mike Mahoney captured his 300^th career victory by downing Vassar 10-5 over the weekend. The Saints are now on a three-game winning streak.
• Softball: The Saints picked up a 10-0 win in game two of the doubleheader with Clarkson on Friday. Sophomore Maeve Thompson led the charge for both games, recording four hits on five at-bats and three RBIs on the day. They split the DH and are 8-6 in the season. 
• Baseball: The Saints took down Rochester in both games of a doubleheader on Saturday. The Saints took game one 2-1 and game two 6-1. Graduate student Brett Federico, sophomore Matt Davis, and junior John Gannon led the way on offense. Sophomores David Zuhlsdorf and Boden Driscoll gave SLU 14 solid innings on the mound.
• Women’s Tennis: The Saints swept the weekend, taking down RIT 6-1 and Ithaca 5-2. Junior Angelica Aksdal-Jansen and first-year Elisa Luri led the way as they went undefeated in all their matches in both singles and doubles.
• Men’s Track and Field: Junior Nick Lyndaker picked up a pair of major end-of-season awards. He was named the USTFCCCA Mideast Region Runner of the Year and the Liberty League Indoor Track Athlete of the Year. At Hamilton this week, first-year Trystan Biller highlighted the men’s team with a win in the 400-meter hurdles and a second-place finish in the 110-meter hurdles. Senior Jack Simack won the javelin.  
• Women’s Track and Field: Sophomore Quinn Sirgany headlined the Saints’ trip to Hamilton, placing first in the 1500-meter run. Junior Amelia Berthold broke two personal records, placing second in the 100-meter hurdles and fourth in the 400-meter hurdles.
