Roy Caldwell

After studying mathematics and European history at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Dr. Roy Caldwell, Professor of French and Film Studies, completed an MA and a PhD in Comparative Literature at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. At St. Lawrence he has given courses at all levels of French and in Film Studies; he has also directed SLU’s Program in France on six occasions. His nomadic scholarly path has resulted in articles on the American writers Robert Coover and Paul Auster, on Flaubert, Diderot, Robbe-Grillet, Vargas-Llosa, Sterne, Kafka, Zola, and several more on the Martinicans Chamoiseau and Confiant. He has written a monograph on Louis Feuillade’s classic of early cinema, Les Vampires, several novels, and a memoir of the year he spent playing basketball for a French university team. His most recent book, Chante, rossignol, chante, explores strategies for incorporating French song texts into courses of advanced French.
