Matt McCluskey became St. Lawrence’s Coordinator of Academic Engagement in February 2018 after nearly a decade in the University’s Academic Support and Disability Services Offices. Matt sees this new position as a wonderful opportunity to teach, mentor, and advise students, to lead our peer tutors, and to help students--- especially sophomores---develop momentum in their academic and co-curricular endeavors. He hopes to use his skills, experience, and many good relationships to connect students with engaged learning opportunities, teach good academic strategies, and help students imagine, develop, and implement a positive vision for their time here. He is energized by the idea of building linkages between lessons learned in athletics and the classroom along with supporting peer mentorship efforts on campus.
An alumnus of St. Lawrence, Matt has worked with hundreds of students on topics ranging from time management to active reading to thoughtfully approaching the writing process since returning to campus in 2008. He holds a master's degree from Duke University and served in such roles as legislative director, high school history teacher, and political researcher before returning to SLU. Matt is married to Jennifer McCluskey, a photographer and business developer in the North Country. They have a 7-year-old son, Sean; a goofy cat, Lovebug; and family in the Hudson Valley and Middle Tennessee, whom they enjoy seeing whenever they can. Matt is a member of the county planning board, a youth soccer coach, and the mentor for SLU's alpine ski and men's soccer teams. When he’s not at work, Matt enjoys kayaking, Nordic skiing, being a hockey dad, cooking, and doing battle with his 118-year-old house.
