Matt McCluskey was appointed as the Director of Disability and Accessibility Services in the Summer of 2015 after serving as St. Lawrence’s Coordinator of Academic Support for the previous seven years. An alumnus of St. Lawrence, Matt has enjoyed working with hundreds of students in each of these roles at his alma mater, on topics ranging from academic skill building to critical reading to ensuring equal access to all of the college's programs and activities. Matt has taught 20 classes at SLU, on topics ranging from land use planning to political theory, and has served in supportive roles within the First-Year Program, Center for Civic Engagement, Higher Education Opportunity Program, and Athletics. He has intentionally worked broadly and closely with people across campus throughout his time at St. Lawrence, in addition to studying diligently to remain current in his fields---always in the interest of promoting the best possible student experiences.
His commitment to serving students with disabilities stretches back well over a decade, beginning with his training as an Orton-Gillingham language tutor for dyslexic students in the late 90’s. Matt has subsequently taught students with dyslexia, ADHD, and other specific learning disabilities in New York, Tennessee, North Carolina, and Maryland, and his academic support work at St. Lawrence regularly extended to the provision of services for people with disabilities. Matt earned a master’s degree from Duke University and has served in professional roles over the years ranging from legislative director, to high school soccer coach, to political researcher. He aims to continue the same levels of conscientious and effective service, along with fostering commitments to broad access, inclusiveness, and positive student experiences, that have been hallmarks of the Disability and Accessibility Services Office for many years. He is committed to maintaining the office's dedication to robust advising, advocacy, and research. Both his office door and a listening ear are open to all, and he looks forward to building new relationships and continuing many existing ones in this role.
Matt is married to Jennifer McCluskey, a photographer and business developer in the North Country. They have a 5-year-old son, Sean, and many close family members in the Poughkeepsie and Nashville areas, who they try to see whenever they can. When he’s not at work, Matt enjoys being outside, playing with his family, traveling, kayaking, and cheering on the St. Lawrence Saints and Montreal Impact soccer teams.
