Dr Mario Tumen

Dr. Mario Tumen comes to St. Lawrence University as a Visiting Instructor in Caribbean & Latin American History. He received his BA in History from Augusta University, an MA in History from Georgia College & State University, and a PhD from the University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB), in Latin American History. At UCSB, he served as an instructor for the Latin American & Iberian Studies Program, the Writing Program, and the History Department. He has taught survey courses in Latin America, Colonial Latin America, and Modern Latin America, and led seminars in political history, sports, and the Cold War in Latin America. His research focuses on political culture in nineteenth-century Peru, with a focus on the relationship between race, ethnicity, and indigenous mobilizations in the Andes. His current project traces the impact of socialism in nineteenth-century Latin America, moving beyond narratives that define the politics of the region as an affair primarily dominated by liberals and conservatives.
