The Wind Ensemble, directed by Theresa Witmer, invites you to their concert, Live Long and Prosper, music from our backyard, worldwide, and out into deep space.
Our 42-member Wind Ensemble performs a variety of music that invites you to:
- the sunny Mediterranean and the Island of Cyprus in music by Carol Barnett
- a celebration of iconic composer John Williams' recent 90th birthday with a medley of his music, including Darth Vader's Theme (Imperial March), the Cantina Band, themes from Jaws, E.T., and more
- Continue discussions about race that composer Chandler Wilson says "are needed for society to progressively move forward" in Conversations, his recent composition that weaves parts of America, the Beautiful, and the Black National Anthem, Lift Every Voice and Sing, into this music.
- Revel in the exceptional (maybe unprecedented?) sounds created by one of America's most valuable treasures, the great composer Leonard Bernstein, in his music from West Side Story.
- Imagine being a traveler on the 17th century "Takaido Highway" in Japan, a historical road of over three hundred miles. You might rest for the night on your journey at one of the fifty-three post stations. Julie Giroux's Evening Snow at Kambara conjures one of those post stations with the harp, the alto flute, and the rest of the haunting and gorgeous sounds created within the Wind Ensemble.
- Head into space with music from Star Trek. The show's creator, Gene Roddenberry, told us that "Star Trek was an attempt to say that humanity will reach maturity and wisdom on the day that it begins not just to tolerate, but to take a special delight in differences in ideas and differences in life forms."
The event is free, open to the public, and in-person, with livestreaming.
