African Security, Peace and Reconciliation: The Role of International Actors

Tuesday October 21st---Carnegie 10 (7:30pm)

Peace and reconciliation efforts across the world’s second largest continent are diverse and complex, but often involve international actors in mediating conflict. From global and western institutions like the UN, EU and western donor nations, to African based organizations such as the African Union, this roundtable discussion addresses the broad question on how does the presence of international actors shape local peace and security efforts across the continent?

Please join us as we host distinguished scholars from the Brookings Institution and local institutions who work at the intersection of these academic and policy debates in Washington D.C. and around the world. Celebrating 10 years of partnership through the African Security Initiative, scholars Mike O’Hanlon and Vanda Felbab-Brown have hosted 13 students for paid internships in Washington D.C. leading to prestigious opportunities to engage in important international and foreign policy debates. Emmanuel Balogun from Skidmore colleges joins the panel with an expertise in African regional organizations and governance.

For students attending this debate we will also have an opportunity to network and learn important tips on how to prepare for a career in international relations, research and policy work.

Sponsored by the African Studies Program, CIIS and the joint African Security Initiative Grant with the Brookings Institution

We hope to see you and your students there.
