    On May 16, President Morris informed the Laurentian community about the passing of Melinda Goss, a former assistant manager of the Brewer Bookstore. Known for her wide-ranging knowledge and thoughtful recommendations, Goss brought a genuine passion for books to her work and was a helpful, collegial presence to both staff and customers.     On May 19, President Morris informed the Laurentian community about the passing of Joyce Hogle, who worked for 32 years in Dining and Catering. Remembered by colleagues as steady, capable, and skilled at her craft, she was known for her baked goods and for supporting the day-to-day operations that kept our community running smoothly. It is one of the reasons St. Lawrence’s New York City Semester—not limited to finance—can be transformational for those getting a foot in the door.     Physics Majors Present Posters and Demonstrations

    Earlier this semester, Dr. Munir Pirbhai gave the students in his Phys-317 Instrumentation Lab a list of experiments to explore and gave them two minutes to choose one that sounded interesting, without looking up any details. They recently shared their findings.

    Annual Community Physician Reception

    Dr. Cynthia Mondesir, Dr. Heather Jones, Dr. Jillian Bartling, and Dr. Tim Atkinson served as panelists for Foundations of Medicine and pre-health students at the annual Community Physician Reception.

    Multi-Language Major Presents Paper at International Middle Eastern Studies Conference

    Billie McClosky '24 presented her paper “Reclaiming the Image of the Arab Women: Feminism and Empowerment through Photography and Social Advocacy” at the Middle Eastern Studies Association Conference in Denver, Colorado, on December 1st.

    - Online voting event It’s that time of the year again! Voting is now open for the images presented by my students in biology 392, Research Methods in Fluorescence and Confocal Microscopy. Voting will close on the 14th at noon.

    Skating Saints Sweep Weekend 

    It was a great weekend to be a Saint! Men's ice hockey swept the competition with a 4-0 win over Brown University on Saturday after skating to a 2-1 win over Yale University on Friday. The wins for the Scarlet and Brown continued with men's basketball defeating Geneseo 85-70 on the road while women's basketball topped Clarkson 64-54 at home last week. For up-to-date schedules, news, and scores visit SaintsAthletics.com.

    Weekend Wins and Broken Records for the Saints, Spring Sports Continue

    Over the weekend, both the men's and women's tennis teams celebrated a Senior Day sweep by shutting out Bard College 9-0. The wins for the Saints continued with baseball defeating Bard 16-6, softball shutting out Skidmore 3-0, men's lacrosse defeating Vassar 17-12, and women's lacrosse beating RPI 13-12. Men's golf topped Clarkson 303-312 in a single round while Mary Grace McCann '25 claimed the top spot for the women's golf team at the Martin and Wallace Invite in Cortland. During the Bucknell Bison Outdoor Classic, Matt Abell '23 broke the 3,000-meter steeplechase record that has stood since 1987 to lead the men's track and field team. For up-to-date schedules, news, and scores visit SaintsAthletics.com.

    Weekend of Winning!

    This week, the Saints women’s hockey team started off strong with a 2-1 win over the University of  Ottawa on Tuesday. The Scarlet and Brown later won 5-1 against Mercyhurst in the first of two games over the weekend. Their second match turned into a close game as the Saints were down by three points with only 1 minute and 17 seconds left in the game. Women's hockey scored three goals to tie the game and ultimately won in overtime, 6-5. The men's golf team also prevailed this weekend with a first-place win at the Oswego State Invitational. Sophomore Jimmy King ’26 took home the Liberty League Athletics Performer of the Week award.

    Research Topics That Fascinated Our Summer Fellows

    This summer, our research fellows asked a lot of questions. Like, “What can glacial striations in the North Country tell us about climate change?” Or, “How do you build an enigma machine?” While searching for answers and testing solutions alongside their faculty mentors, they gained hands-on experience and sharpened their skills as scientists and mathematicians.     Associate Professor and Co-Chair World Languages, Cultures, and Media Department Eloise Brezault hosted two renowned Senegalese artists whose work has been nourished by political and social activism to keep democracy alive in Senegal. The artists spent two days on campus, visiting classes and speaking with students about the importance of art and activism in their work.

    Scholar-Athlete Classroom Wins!

    This past week the Saints have been excelling beyond the soccer field. Grace Bridge ’24, Mia Cence ’25, Natalie Schock ’25, and Keely Snode ’24 from the women's soccer team have earned a place on the Academic All-District team, recognized by the College Sports Communicators (CSC). In the men's soccer division, Owen Lillis ’25 and Ben Woelfinger ’23 have also secured spots on the CSC Academic All-District team. These scholar-athletes hold a minimum cumulative grade-point average of 3.5, a sophomore academic standing or higher, and have actively contributed to at least 50% of the teams contests.

    The Laurentian Network In Action!

    During the mid-semester break, students explored possible career paths, peered into cutting-edge fields, and got to experience the nearby, vibrant city of Burlington, Vermont through SLU Connect Burlington!  Students engaged in expert panels that provided industry insights from aerospace manufacturing, athletic nutrition, non-profit, healthcare, and other sectors! They even got to step behind the scenes during company site tours of companies including Beta Technologies, UnTapped: All Natural Athletic Fuel, Hula, and Weird Window Brewing.     Ultramarathoner Jeff Mogavero ’16 Found His Stride While Running Trails at St. Lawrence

    St. Lawrence alumnus Jeff Mogavero ’16 recorded the fastest debut in race history at the 52nd annual Western States Endurance Run held June 28-29—the oldest and most prestigious 100-mile ultramarathon in the United States—where he finished in fourth place with a time of 14 hours, 30 minutes, and 11 seconds.

    Spafford Family Gives $1 Million to Expand Access at St. Lawrence University

    St. Lawrence University has received a $1 million gift from alumnus Jeff Spafford ’88 and his wife, Amy, to establish the Spafford Family Endowed Scholarship Fund. The fund will provide financial support for students, ensuring access to the life-shaping experiences that define a St. Lawrence education.

    Douglas Foundation Makes $1 Million Gift to Support Kirk Douglas Hall

    St. Lawrence University has received a $1 million gift from the Douglas Foundation to support the long-term maintenance and care of Kirk Douglas Hall, the residence and community hub named for the legendary actor and philanthropist, Class of 1939.

    Ella Martel '27, a junior biomedical sciences major, recently participated in the Research and Posters Showcase at nearby Clarkson University and won best undergraduate oral presentation in the Biomedical and Health Sciences category.

    Religious Studies Department gains access to Gale Special Collections

    St. Lawrence University faculty, students, and staff now have access to a special collection of six resources from Gale, a global provider of research and learning resources. The collection includes FBI files on political organizations, activism, and domestic surveillance in the 20th century.

    Student Research Investigates Ways to Save Lives 

    Alice Khalil ’27, a neuroscience major and chemistry minor from Baniyas, Syria, spent her summer working on a faster, more sensitive way to detect heart attacks in their earliest stages. In the lab with Professor of Chemistry Samantha Glazier, she conducted research aimed at detecting even the smallest traces of troponin more accurately and earlier than current methods allow.
