    St. Lawrence University Among Top Institutions for Studying Abroad

    With more than 60 percent of students studying off campus for a semester, St. Lawrence University has risen in the ranks among baccalaureate institutions for the number of students studying abroad.

    Alumni in Action - December 2021

    Several St. Lawrence alumni were featured by news outlets for publishing books, being honored as military veterans, excelling in athletic competitions, creating environmentally conscious businesses, and creating a legacy in their medical profession.

    St. Lawrence University Receives $10,000 Grant in Support of North Country Public History Project

    St. Lawrence recently received a $10,000 grant from the Council of Independent Colleges (CIC) in support of a public history project that explores feminism in the North Country during the 1970s and 1980s in partnership with the TAUNY Center.

    Wind Ensemble Live and In-Person Crossing Barriers Concert

    - Peterson-Kermani Performance Hall The St. Lawrence Wind Ensemble, directed by Theresa Witmer, will perform a variety of music from the southern shores of New Zealand, the Caribbean, Argentina, the British Isles, and more. This in-person event is free, open to the public, and available via live stream.

    100th Candlelight Service

    - Gunnison Memorial Chapel For the last century, the Candlelight Service has been a cornerstone of the St. Lawrence experience and the holiday season in the North Country. The service offers a pause for reflection before final exams and marks the end of the fall semester and the approaching turn of the calendar year. The theme for this year's event is "Comfort and Joy."

    Wenger '24 Shatters Swim Record; Winter Sports Continue

    Maggie Wenger ’24 broke a 1978 St. Lawrence program record when she won the 200-yard freestyle (1:55.92) during the six-team Don Richards Swimming and Diving Invitational at RIT on Saturday. Over the weekend, Men’s Squash swept Colgate, Hamilton, and Wesleyan 9-0 while Women’s Squash defeated Colgate 8-1 and Hamilton 6-3. Men’s Hockey defeated Colgate 4-3 at Appleton Arena while Women's Track and Field opened their season by taking home the team title at the Holiday Relays and Men's Track and Field secured five event wins at the five-team meet. After defeating Union 62-58 in their conference opener, Women’s Basketball defeated Skidmore 73-62 while Men’s Basketball edged Skidmore 58-57 in a close Liberty League contest.

    St. Lawrence Scholar Selected for Prestigious U.S. Department of State Fellowship Program

    Following a highly-competitive nationwide contest, Shiru Kimani ’22 has been selected for the U.S. Department of State Thomas Pickering Fellowship Program, an award that fully funds a two-year master’s degree program for students pursuing a degree relevant to the conduct of U.S. foreign policy.

    St. Lawrence University Receives $250,000 Emerson Foundation Grant in Support of Data Science Internships and Research

    St. Lawrence University has received a $250,000 grant from the Fred L. Emerson Foundation in support of the University’s “Building Bright Futures in Data Science” project which will expand summer internship and research opportunities for St. Lawrence students in the rapidly growing field of data science, one of the University’s newest majors.

    St. Lawrence Undergraduate Researchers to Observe Galaxies with Remote Telescope

    St. Lawrence students will observe galaxies using the world’s largest steerable, single-dish telescope in Green Bank, West Virginia, from their labs in Canton, N.Y., thanks to a successful observation proposal by a research team including Henry Priest Professor of Physics Aileen O’Donoghue and Haille Perkins ’22.

    Four members of the St. Lawrence University community recently attended and presented at the 2021 Critical Media Literacy Conference of the Americas (CMLCA), held virtually October 15-17, 2021. All four are involved with Weave News, an independent media outlet founded at St. Lawrence in 2007.

    Faculty members put their knowledge into action so students and others are able to benefit from it. Recently, faculty published journal articles with students and alumni, presented scholarly papers at conferences, showcased artwork with alumni, and shared their career journeys with doctoral students.

    Faculty members, students, and clubs were featured in local, regional, national, and international media outlets using their expertise to weigh in on current events, providing tips for North Country star-gazing, and sharing their local conservation efforts.

    Prepare for the Unexpected: Stormy Skies, Claustrophobia, and the Art of Pinhole Cameras

    Using cardboard boxes, tape, and aluminum foil, students built cameras to create small aperture to allow for exposure of chemically treated paper housed in the chamber of the box. Their unique results included a 32-pinhole lens camera used to make self-portraits; a 360-view multi-lens camera, and a floss container repurposed as a pinhole camera held in the student’s mouth during the exposure.

    Saints Basketball Teams Top Clarkson; Winter Sports Return Dec. 29

    Women's Basketball ended the semester undefeated after dominating Clarkson, 62-38, to improve to 8-0 on the season, while Men's Basketball improved to 6-1 with a 65-59 win over the Golden Knights. Saints Athletics will continue their winter schedules on Wednesday, December 29, with Men's Hockey facing off against UMass Lowell at Appleton Arena.
