DELTA PHI ALPHA - THE GERMAN NATIONAL HONORARY SOCIETY

St. Lawrence University : Eta Omicron Chapter, chartered in May 1970.   

Requirements for Membership

In order to be eligible for membership in SLU’s Eta Omicron chapter of Delta Phi Alpha, a student must have completed at least four (4) courses in German at the 102 level or above, have a 3.4 grade average in German courses, and have earned a 3.2 cumulative average overall.  It is not necessary to be minor in German Studies to join Delta Phi Alpha.  The student must, however, submit a request to the department to be considered for membership, and if invited to join, the student must attend the induction ceremony.  The one-time initiation fee is $20.00 to be paid by the deadline announced by the Department of World Languages, Cultures and Media before the induction ceremony is held. Students may also choose to purchase honor cords for an additional $10.00. Induction ceremonies are held once per year in the Spring at the Senior Reception held by the Department of World Languages, Cultures and Media.  Members receive a certificate, pin and, if they choose to purchase them, honor cords.  The society declares its purpose as follows:

"The National German Honor Society, Delta Phi Alpha, seeks to recognize excellence in the study of German and to provide an incentive for higher scholarship. The Society aims to promote the study of the German language, literature and civilization and endeavors to emphasize those aspects of German life and culture which are of universal value and which contribute to man's eternal search for peace and truth."
