Energy and sustainability are a significant focus of St. Lawrence’s 20-year Facilities Master Plan, which will guide, protect, develop and enrich our learning and living environment while supporting the University’s vision. The first step: a new residence hall, projected to open for fall 2014.

1857
First building on campus, College Hall, now Richardson Hall, opens.
1861
Theological School has its first graduating class.
1863
Olympia Brown is the first woman graduate of the Theology School.
1869
Herring Library, the campus’s second building, is erected.
1873
Absalom Graves Gaines begins the second longest presidency at St. Lawrence.
1874
Kappa Kappa Gamma, the first sorority, starts as the Browning Society.
1876
Scarlet and brown are named the official St. Lawrence colors.
1879
Isaac M. Atwood begins 20-year presidency of the Theological School.
1897
Intercollegiate basketball begins.
1899
The New York Lambda chapter of Phi Beta Kappa is installed on campus.
1900
Theological School and College of Letters and Science united.
1901
Irving Bacheller, class of 1882, publishes Eben Holden.
1905
Carnegie Hall of Science is a gift of Andrew Carnegie.
1911
Students start producing The Hill News student newspaper.
1912
Ice hockey makes first appearance.
1921
The first Holiday Candlelight Service is held.
1926
Gunnison Memorial Chapel built.
1926
First intercollegiate ice hockey game is a 1-0 loss to archrival Clarkson.
1929
Marie Curie comes to campus to dedicate Hepburn Hall.
1931
Albert Crary, future explorer of both the North and South Poles, graduates.
1933
Hal Schumacher ’33, future star pitcher of the New York Giants, graduates.
1937
The Outing Club, second oldest in the country, is founded.
1939
Kirk Douglas is elected student government president, graduates.
1950
Appleton Arena is dedicated.
1956
St. Lawrence celebrates its centennial.
1959
The Owen D. Young Library is dedicated.
1964
St. Lawrence’s first international study program is inaugurated in France.
1970
Augsbury Physical Education Center and Leithead Field house built.
1970
University shut down for two days to protest the Vietnam War.
1974
St. Lawrence becomes first college in America with study program in Kenya.
1975
Richard F. Brush Art Gallery dedicated.
1980
Viggo Mortensen graduates.
1989
For the first time, all first-year students complete First-Year Program.
2001
Newell Field House opens.
2002
Campaign St. Lawrence raises $132,175,669.
2004
Sullivan Student Center opens.
2006
The Diana B. Torrey '82 Health and Counseling Center opens.
2007
Johnson Hall of Science opens, awarded LEED Gold certification.
2008
William L. Fox '75 elected 18th president of St. Lawrence.

Reading and writing do not take a vacation during the summer months at St.
Six outstanding St. Lawrence students have been selected as Summer Admissions Interns for 2013, with several opportunities to participate in the recruitment process for future students. The students will intern for 10 weeks this summer, leading tours for prospective students and their families and working on administrative projects for Admissions.
