In Memory: Carl Hull

Dear Laurentian community,

I write today with the sad news that Carl Emerson Hull died on March 9 at the age of 89. He was among our longest-serving employees, retiring in 2010 after 53 years of dedication to our community while taking pride in his work as a custodian.

Carl first joined the facilities operations team in 1957. He meticulously cared for the athletic complex, keeping track of all athletic events so that the venues were gleaming for game time. He seemed to never stop moving, working hard and taking great pride in everything he did. After his retirement, he was a regular at women’s basketball games, cheering on the team and catching up with many of the veteran coaches he got to know over so many years. Student-athletes, upon returning as alumni, sought Carl out just to say hello.

Carl was born on February 1, 1935, in Russell, New York to the late Kenneth and Jenny (Backus) Hull. He attended Knox Memorial School in Russell. He married Margaret Kirky in Russell on June 28, 1959.

Carl was a member and part of the original founding crew of the Russell Volunteer Fire Department, where he had served as past Chief.

He loved being outdoors, fishing, gardening, and doing yard work.

He is survived by his wife, Margaret; two sons, Paul and Neil Hull; two daughters, Sally (Mark Rice), and Sherry (Christopher Moore), two grandsons and their wives, two great-grandsons, and a sister.

As we grieve the loss of our friend and colleague, we are inspired by Carl’s steadfast dedication to making our community shine.

Please join us in celebrating Carl’s life by sharing your memories of him on the St. Lawrence University website. You can read the remembrances of others here.
