About Our Program

Creating your own major at St. Lawrence, known as our multi-field major, will give you the freedom to do that. Combining the best of what our liberal arts education has to offer, our multi-field major will teach you invaluable skills in critical thinking, communication, creative problem-solving, and self-reflection.
Learning Experiences to Prepare for Your Career
As you craft a major from courses in any department on campus, the learning experiences you have access to are as unique and diverse as your interests.St. Lawrence University Fellowship Program
Gain experience conducting hands-on, intensive research with a faculty mentor in a topic area of your choice. Research can take place on campus, across the country, and around the world. You’ll make unexpected connections and be equipped to make unprecedented discoveries.
First-Year Program (FYP)
Offering students a dynamic living and learning environment, First-Year Programs give smaller groups of students the chance to explore an intriguing topic with their professors. You’ll hone your critical thinking and research skills which will set you up for success as you pursue an interdisciplinary course of study.

In addition to being located in an area rich with environmental and cultural research opportunities, there are three additional colleges and universities within 10 miles of St. Lawrence that we often partner with one another to share unique resources. One opportunity that would help you explore your entrepreneurial potential and hone valuable skills for your professional path is our partnership with Clarkson University’s Shipley Center for Innovation. Together, we’ll provide you with the opportunities, resources, and mentorship you need to bring your ideas to life.

In addition to seven St. Lawrence-run programs found in places like France, Kenya, London, and Spain, you can choose from 30 affiliate programs in 20 countries to challenge your perspective and expand your worldview. Past majors have studied in Trinidad and Tobago, Costa Rica, Austria, New Zealand, and the United Kingdom.

Why Create Your Own Major at St. Lawrence
A St. Lawrence education is interdisciplinary by nature. Our goal is to encourage students to think critically and creatively, pursue their passions, and follow unexpected paths towards new discoveries. Sometimes, this can be done with double majors and minors. For other students, their academic passions are best pursued through creating their own major.

Program Requirements & Courses
The multi-field major will require you to submit a proposal of your plan of study, incorporating coursework from a minimum of two departments or fields. You’ll work closely with a faculty member from each discipline as you tackle the topics and issues that mean the most to you.

While you can select courses from any field of study offered on campus, students regularly incorporate classes from other programs.
