Family Weekend 2019 Schedule

SCHEDULE OF EVENTS

FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 27

8:30 a.m. – 4 p.m. Class Visits | Around campus  Parents are invited to visit classes to meet faculty or to meet administrators in their offices. Appointments in advance are encouraged and should be made through your student(s) or by calling the department directly. 

12 – 5 p.m. Brush Gallery Exhibitions | Griffiths Arts Center, Richard F. Brush Gallery  Brush Gallery will also be open 12-5 on Saturday.  

12 – 9:30 p.m. Family Weekend Check-In | Sullivan Student Center, 2nd Floor Main Entrance  Pre-registered families may pick up your schedules, name tags, and tote bags. Families who have not yet registered may do so at this time.

1 p.m.  Japanese Garden Tour | Japanese Garden (Meet at Sykes flagpole; Rain: cancelled)  Inspired by Zen gardens in Japan, the Japanese Garden was constructed in 2009 and serves as both a place of reflection and an outdoor classroom.

1 – 3:30 p.m. Graduate School Resource Room Open House | Madill Hall, Room 220  Stop by and meet students and staff representing the St. Lawrence University Collegiate Science & Technology Entry Program (CSTEP) and the McNair Scholars Program. These two initiatives are designed to assist students to prepare for graduate studies at the post-baccalaureate level. Learn about the resources available to assist students to pursue their educational plans vis-à-vis their career goals. Current students will share their strategies for successfully navigating the graduate and professional school application processes.

2:30 – 3:30 p.m. Internship Fellowship Poster Presentations | Sullivan Student Center, Winston Room (1st Floor) Meet the 2019 recipients of Career Services’ Internship Fellowship Awards and learn more about a variety of interesting internships completed by St. Lawrence students this summer.

3 – 4 p.m. Sociology Department Meet & Greet | Piskor Hall, Room 101  Sociology majors, minors, and their families are welcome to come meet with department faculty.

3 – 4 p.m. Psychology Department Family Reception | Flint Hall, Room 101  Join us for an informal reception for psychology students and their families. Any student taking a psychology course is welcome to attend with your family/friends! Light refreshments provided.  

4 p.m. Phi Beta Kappa Induction Ceremony | Herring-Cole Hall, Feinstone Room  All are welcome to join us as the first group of honorees from the Class of 2020 are inducted into this national academic honorary.

4:30 – 5:30 p.m. Honors Reception | Sullivan Student Center, Winston Room & Atrium (1st Floor)  Academic honorary organizations and departments will celebrate the accomplishments of their members. SLU Fellows, McNair Scholars, Center for International and Intercultural Studies Fellows and O’Brien First-Year Seminar Research Prize winners will have poster presentations on their summer research projects. 

4:30 – 8:30 p.m. Dana Dining Center Open for Dinner  Meals may be purchased with cash, credit card, or meal passes available during pre-registration. Students should use their meal plan.

5:30 p.m. Omicron Delta Kappa (ODK) Induction Ceremony | Sullivan Student Center, Hannon Room (Room 332)  Members “tapped” in the spring of 2019 will be inducted into this national leadership society. All are welcome!

6:30 – 7:30 p.m. Guest Lecture: Ascending Afghanistan’s Highest Peak | Newell Fitness Center Multipurpose Room  Join SLU alum Emily Drinkwater, a certified IMFGA Mountain Guide based in Salt Lake City, Utah, as she shares her experiences. Emily’s numerous accomplishments include guiding the first Afghan women to summit Afghanistan’s Highest Peak, Noshaq, in 2018.

7 p.m.  Women’s Volleyball vs. Bard | Ronald T. Burkman Gymnasium

7 p.m.  Scarlet & White Men's Lacrosse Intra-squad Scrimmage | Hall-Leet Stadium 

7 p.m.  Howl Story Slam | Pub 56 The Howl Story Slam, hosted by NCPR, is hosting its first event at SLU! Share your best "Hot Mess" story with a chance to win a trip to the Grand Slam contest in December. All stories must be true, and no longer than 5 minutes. This event will be hosted by Jessica Lawrence of NCPR (SLU class of '05) and former NCPR news intern, James Lehner, '20. 

7:30 p.m.  Laurentian Singers Concert | Griffiths Arts Center, Peterson-Kermani Performance Hall  The first of two opportunities to see the Laurentian Singers perform! A second performance is scheduled for Saturday evening at 7:30 p.m.

8:30 – 9:30 p.m.  Family Weekend Dessert Social, featuring a Celebration of SLU’s Diversity Milestones & Live Music by SLUFunk | Sullivan Student Center  A great chance to meet and mingle with your student’s friends and their families! Registered families are invited to visit Sullivan Student Center for delicious desserts and conversation. Please enter through the main doors and show your name badge. A Celebration of SLU’s Diversity Milestones & Artwork will be featured in the Alumni Living Room (3rd floor). SLUFunk, St. Lawrence’s hard-driving, horn-based funk band, will perform in the Winston Room (1st floor) beginning at 9 p.m.! Please note that while SLUFunk will play until 10 p.m., desserts and the exhibit will close at 9:30. The exhibit will also be available for viewing from 9 a.m. – 9 p.m. on Saturday.

9:30 p.m.  A Cappella Concert | Gunnison Memorial Chapel  Come watch St. Lawrence’s a cappella groups in a special Family Weekend performance! A second performance is scheduled for Saturday evening at 9:30 p.m.

 

SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 28

Beginning at 8:45 a.m., the North Star Café in the Sullivan Student Center will be open for made-to-order meals.

9 a.m. – 9 p.m.  A Celebration of St. Lawrence University’s Diversity Milestones & Artwork |Sullivan Student Center, Alumni Living Room (3rd Floor) Sponsored by the Office of Diversity & Inclusion and International Student Services, this exhibit will highlight the university’s diversity milestones and feature artwork created by our students.  

10 – 11 a.m.  Conversation & Continental Breakfast with President Fox and Members of the Senior Administration | Eben Holden Conference Center, Eben Main & Atrium (lower level) Registered families are invited to join President Fox for brief remarks on the University and complimentary continental breakfast. Please enter through the main doors and show your name badge.

10 a.m. – 1 p.m.  5th Annual Ski Swap Sale | Leithead Fieldhouse  Sponsored by the Alpine Ski Team.

10:30 a.m. – 2 p.m.  Dana Brunch | Dana Dining Center  Meals may be purchased with cash, or credit card, or meal passes available during pre-registration. Students should use their meal plan.

11 a.m. – Noon  Math, Computer Science, and Statistics Family Reception | Valentine Hall, PQRC Lobby (1st Floor)  Join us for an informal reception outside the Peterson Quantitative Resource Center (PQRC) to include coffee, donuts, muffins, and other snacks.

11 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.  All About Off-Campus Study | Hepburn Hall, Room 218  The Center for International and Intercultural Studies (CIIS) staff will share everything you need to know in preparation for off-campus study, including answering questions about health and safety, academic credit, cost of participation, and the application process. This will be followed by an overview of specific programs and break-out sessions, during which students who have studied in each program will answer questions about their experiences.

11 a.m. – 1 p.m.  Academic Advising & First-Year Program Open House | Madill Hall, Center for Student Achievement  Drop by the Madill Multipurpose Room with questions about the First Year Program or academic resources; members of offices of the First Year Program, Academic Advising, and Student Accessibility Services will be on hand.

11:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.  Supporting Your Student in the College-to-Career Journey | Sullivan Student Center, Hannon Room (Room 332)  Alumni Executive Council and Career Services regularly connect students to Laurentians for them to gain insight on how to network and explore careers, position themselves for internships/jobs, and make the most of their time at St. Lawrence. Now we would like to connect family members to the alumni network to glean advice. In this session alumni, who are also SLU parents like you, will facilitate a conversation about how to best support your student in the college-to-career (or graduate/professional school) journey. This event is sponsored by the Alumni Executive Council and the office of Career Services.

1 – 1:45 p.m. Conversation with the Chaplain and Stained Glass Window Tour | Gunnison Memorial Chapel  Join the Rev. Kathleen Buckley, University Chaplain, as she shares an emerging vision for religion and spirituality on college campuses, specifically at St. Lawrence. Then enjoy a guided tour of the stained glass windows of the chapel as you learn about the historical significance of this treasured St. Lawrence place as well as the meaning behind the messages interwoven through each window.

Organ Recital | Gunnison Memorial Chapel  Come listen to the Charles A. Coffin Estey Organ built in 1925-26 for Gunnison Memorial Chapel as organist Sondra Goldsmith Proctor explores the pipes with music by John Philip Sousa, Dietrich Buxtehude, Louis-Claude Daquin and more! 

2 p.m.  Women’s Volleyball vs. Vassar | Ronald T. Burkman Gymnasium

2 p.m.  Women’s Field Hockey vs. Skidmore | Hall/Leet Stadium

2 p.m.  Men’s Soccer vs. Rensselaer | MacAllaster Field

2 p.m.  Bob Ross Paint-Along Party | Gulick Theatre  Sponsored by University Theatre/the Performance & Communication Arts Department.

2 p.m. Guided Waterfall Hike to Lampson Falls | Meet at Brewer Bookstore parking lot  Join Nature Up North, an environmental education organization based at St. Lawrence, for a guided hike through scenic Lampson Falls. This is an easy hike that leads to spectacular views of local falls. Please wear good walking shoes and clothing appropriate for the day’s weather. Water, a snack, and a camera are also recommended. The trip will depart from Brewer Bookstore at 2 p.m. and will take approximately 3 hours. Transportation is provided but space is limited to families who signed up in advance. Please note that we will have North Country waterfall and hiking guides available at Family Weekend information tables for those who wish to explore on your own.

3 p.m.  Movie Matinee: Toy Story 4 | Sullivan Student Center, Winston Room Rated G. Sponsored by the Association for Campus Entertainment. Free popcorn! 

3 p.m. Sustainability Program Tour | Sustainability House, 1894 State Highway 68  Stop by the Sustainability House (located just 4 miles from campus) to tour the site of the University’s Sustainability Program. Sustainability Program staff and alumni will be on site to answer your questions and show visitors the gardens, farm animals and farmhouse. The tour will take place outside; please dress accordingly. Directions: Turn right out of Romoda Drive onto East Main Street. At the first set of lights take a right on Route 68 (by the golf course sign). Follow Route 68 for approximately 3 miles; the Sustainability House will be on the left, approximately ½ mile after the yellow blinking light.

3:30-4:30 p.m. Modern Languages & Literature Department Meet & Greet | Carnegie Hall, Room 212  For Modern Languages & Literature majors, minors, and their families.

4 – 5:30 p.m. Alumni Parents & Parents Committee Reception | Eben Holden  The Alumni Executive Council and the Parents Committee Leadership invite all Alumni Parents, Parents Committee members, and their families to this inaugural joint reception. It’s so exciting and rewarding to watch families build their own St. Lawrence legacies! This reception offers a fun opportunity for Laurentian Leadership to thank you for entrusting St. Lawrence in the continued education and development of your children. Please join us to connect and celebrate the Scarlet & Brown! 

4:30 – 8:30 p.m. Dana Dining Center Open for Dinner  Meals may be purchased with cash, credit card, or meal passes available during pre-registration. Students should use their meal plan. The North Star Café in the Sullivan Student Center is also open for made-to-order meals. 

5 – 10:30 p.m. MelonFest | Java Barn  Join the Java House and Artist Guild for a festival featuring both student acts and touring bands, student art, games, snacks, and more! If you feel like dancing, you can stick around for the regular Saturday night Java Show, starting at 10:30 p.m.

7:30 p.m. Laurentian Singers Concert | Griffiths Arts Center, Peterson-Kermani Performance Hall  Join the Laurentian Singers for their traditional Family Weekend concert.

9 p.m.  Night at the Movies: Toy Story 4 | Sullivan Student Center, Winston Room Rated G. Sponsored by the Association for Campus Entertainment. Free popcorn! 

9:30 p.m. A Cappella Concert | Gunnison Memorial Chapel  Come watch St. Lawrence’s a cappella groups in a special Family Weekend performance!  

 

SUNDAY, September 29

7:30 – 10:30 a.m. Dana Dining Center Open for Hot Breakfast  Meals may be purchased with cash, credit card, or meal passes available during pre-registration. Students should use their meal plan.     

9 a.m. – Noon  Coffee & Snacks To Go  Sun Coffee Roasters and Jack’s Corner (convenience store) at the Northstar Café will be open for families who wish to purchase to-go coffee and/or snacks and bottled beverages for the road before departing campus.

10 a.m. Worship Service | Gunnison Memorial Chapel  Family Weekend is an ideal time to honor and celebrate the diversity of the human family. This service will celebrate the three Abrahamic faith traditions. Prayers, music and readings from the Christian, Jewish and Muslim traditions will be offered with a focus on mutual respect and healing. Everyone is welcome to come, learn and celebrate.

10:30 a.m. – 2 p.m. Dana Brunch | Dana Dining Center  Meals may be purchased with cash, or credit card, or meal passes available during pre-registration. Students should use their meal plan.

11 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. Bagel Brunch | Sykes Hall, Formal Lounge  Registered families may enjoy a bagel brunch sponsored by the Jewish Student Union and the Chaplain’s Office. All are welcome!

12 p.m.  Women’s Tennis vs. Oneonta | Sammis Courts   

3 p.m.  Movie Matinee: Toy Story 4 | Sullivan Student Center, Winston Room Rated G. Sponsored by the Association for Campus Entertainment. Free popcorn!                                                  

4 p.m. Gospel Service | Gunnison Memorial Chapel  “Whoever you are and wherever you find yourself on life’s journey, you are welcome here.” Music led by the Community Gospel Choir.                                                           

 

OTHER INFORMATION  

Alcohol Policy: The Family Weekend Committee reminds parents that St. Lawrence is governed by New York State alcohol consumption laws. The state legal drinking age is 21. The University alcohol policy applies to students, faculty, staff and guests of the University. It prohibits consumption of alcoholic beverages at public events including, but not limited to, films, lectures, athletic contests, and performances.

Meal Passes:  Registered guests will be provided with a name badge to use for entry to the following events: Friday Dessert Reception, Saturday Continental Breakfast with President Fox, and Sunday Bagel Brunch. Families who pre-registered online and purchased discounted meal passes to Dana Dining Center may use those passes for meals at Dana. All others must use cash or credit. St. Lawrence students should use their meal card for meals at Dana Dining Center.

Parking: Families are invited to park in any of the available University parking lots. Should you drive a self-contained trailer or motor home, parking is available in the upper section of J-Parking Lot closest to Park Street. However, there are no facilities or hookups. We ask that you park in this area only.

Pet Policy: University policy prohibits pets, with the exception of service animals, from being brought inside University buildings.
