In Memory: Janet Flight | St. Lawrence University President's Office

In Memory: Janet Flight

Dear Laurentian Friends,

Our St. Lawrence colleague of 42 years, from 1957 through 1999, Retired Registrar Janet Flight died on November 22, 2019, at age 82.

Recipient of the Jack Taylor Distinguished Service Award in 1998, Janet was the Laurentian employee who quietly worked behind the scenes to improve the lives of students and faculty alike.  Modest, soft-spoken and intelligent, Janet helped the Registrar’s office evolve in her four decades to its first versions of digital recordkeeping.  She kept apprised of ever-changing state and federal regulations and assured the integrity of the St. Lawrence diploma.  She always made time to counsel those students who asked questions about their degree progress or faculty constructing new or changing majors, minors, and programs.

Janet’s colleague and dear friend Elaine White told me “Janet was one of the nicest people I knew.  When you went in to the Registrar’s office for any reason, she gave you her fullest attention; she was sympathetic to students’ requests and did her best to help each and every one that needed assistance. It was wonderful that she was able to do the traveling she loved for so  many years after her retirement. Janet was a gem and she made St. Lawrence a better place.”

Janet was a member of the DeKalb Junction United Methodist Church, the United Methodist Women, the DeKalb Hermon, Canton and Colton Senior Citizen’s Clubs, The Red Hat Society, and the DeKalb Historical Association. Janet loved to travel, knit, exercise three days a week at St. Lawrence University, and read. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the SPCA, Hospice and Palliative Care of St. Lawrence Valley, or the DeKalb Junction United Methodist Church.  Allen-Denesha Funeral Home is entrusted with arrangements. Calling hours will be Monday, November 25, 12 - 2 pm at the funeral home. Funeral service will follow at 2 pm at the same location.

Lynn and I send our sincere condolences to Janet’s family, her many friends among St. Lawrence employees and retirees, and the countless alumni who benefited from her attentive and patient care.  I invite you to offer your memories at our online tribute page.
