Dear Laurentian Friends,
I write to share that Professor Emeritus of French Edward J. Pierce, formerly of Canton, died on September 22, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He was 82.
A member of the faculty from 1973 to 1998, when he retired, Ed taught on campus and led the University’s international program in Rouen in many years. Professor Steven White told us that “(I remember Ed) as an intellectual with a deep love of the French language and culture. He was instrumental in guiding our students as a director of SLU's program in France, an experience that transformed many lives.” His friend and neighbor Jenny Maine, principal clerk in Brewer Bookstore, remembers “Ed loved France and was at his happiest (when directing the program). He was a man of many interests and talents, including photography and gardening.” Jenny and Steve both remarked on Ed’s devotion to his dogs Chomsky and Boesky.
Relatives and friends may pay their respects to the family on Saturday at 9:30 AM, St. Cecilia Church, 535 Rhawn Street. Philadelphia, PA 19111, followed by a funeral mass at 10:30 AM
His family will appreciate that gifts in his memory be directed to St. Lawrence University and designated to support the general fund of the Owen D. Young Library.
