In Memory: Dining Services Production Manager Doug Mattice
I write to share the sad news that Doug Mattice, a St. Lawrence employee for nearly 20 years, has died. Doug had recently been on disability from the University.
Doug began work at St. Lawrence in 1996 as a cook; in 2003, he was promoted to production manager. His co-workers speak of him as very dedicated to both work and family, expecting others to maintain his own high standards. Those who knew him best say that while it was common to experience Doug's "tough as nails" demeanor, he also expressed a warm and genuine smile, particularly when talking about his family and beloved grandchildren.
One colleague remarked, "He was proud of this staff and the hard work they did, and he was especially proud of the teams we sent to the Culinary Challenge," a competition for dining service workers.
Lynn and I send our heartfelt condolences to Doug’s family and to his colleagues in Dining Services, who supported Doug in his recent illness. When his family has determined its plans for services and remembrances, we will share that information with the St. Lawrence community. Until then, we invite you to honor Doug with your reflections on our Memorial Web site.
