Ilia Casanova

Dr. Ilia Casanova-Marengo earned her Ph.D. in Spanish-American literature from Rutgers University (New Brunswick, New Jersey) and came to St. Lawrence in 1998, where she has taught all levels of Spanish language and courses on Spanish American literature and culture. Her book El intersticio de la colonia: ruptura y mediación en la narrativa antiesclavista cubana published by Editorial Iberoamericana (Madrid 2002) studies the discursive ambiguities and fissures in several texts representative of nineteenth century Cuban anti-slavery narrative as the subversive strategies used by their authors to confront colonialism, narrate their ideologies as subaltern subjects and imagine a national identity beyond Spanish colonial rule. She has co-edited the anthology Abuelas hispanas: desde la memoria y el recuerdo published by Ediciones Torremozas (Madrid 2012). The book honors the figure of Hispanic grandmothers and explores through poems, short stories and essays the bonds between grandmothers and grandchildren. It also reflects on the importance of remembrance and memory.

Her latest work Historias para llenar un mundo. Autobiografía oral de Agustina González published by Paso de Barca (Barcelona 2014) is based on the personal experiences, stories, beliefs and sayings of her maternal grandmother. The book is also a journey into Puerto Rican history and culture and a reflection on the importance of oral biography and spirituality in the context of gerontology.
