Campus Management

Facilities Operations strives to provide the University with safe, clean, attractive, well maintained, and sustainable facilities. Facilities Operations is home to the sustainability office, the heating plant, campus maintenance, and campus grounds.  We have incorporated aspects of both sustainability and the Climate Action Plan into our Facilities Master Plan and our operations.


  • Efficiency Upgrades - When replacing lighting, plumbing, and mechanical fixtures we identify and install more efficient equipment. Including LED lighting, low-flow plumbing fixtures, and high efficiency HVAC equipment. 
  • Appliances - When replacing old or broken appliances preference is given to Energy Star Appliances
  • Furniture - Furniture needing repair is refinished or reupholstered rather than landfilled
  • Floor Care - Floors are striped, sealed, and waxed with  environmentally friendly and waterless products
  • Recycling - Single stream (i.e. no-sort) recycling bins are located throughout campus
  • Composting - Composting is available at the Student Center, North Star Cafe, and in residential halls
  • Paperless Work Orders - Facilities uses a paperless work order system to streamline operational efficiency and to reduce paper waste
  • Electric Vehicles - Facilities Operations reduces scope 1 emissions by using a fleet of electric vehicles (e.g. golf carts) year-round to conduct operations


  • Low - Mow Zones - Over 80 acres on campus are designated to remain wild during the growing season ;  Many of these Low-Mow Zone locations also feature birdhouses and native wildflowers
  • Plant Selection - Grounds selects regionally appropriate and native plant species for campus
  • Nutrient Management - When necessary, organic fertilizers and soil amendments are used  we use organic fertilizers which help to build healthy soils and reduce water pollution
  • Composting - Organic waste, leaves and other yard debris are composted
  • Integrated Pest Management (IPM) - Our IPM outlines how the University, through a concentrated effort, reduces and minimizes the use of toxic/hazardous chemical herbicides/pesticides to a level considered to be absolutely minimal
  • Stormwater Management - Stormwater is conveyed through campus via an underground system to a constructed wetland. Where the stormwater undergoes natural processes involving wetland vegetation, soils, and their associated microbial assemblages to improve water quality before final discharge into the Grasse River

Heating Plant

  • Energy Management System (EMS) - Every building on campus is controlled by a computerized EMS that allows for constant monitoring and adjusts temperatures and turns off lights when buildings and rooms are unoccupied
  • Temperature Setbacks - Energy is conserved when buildings are unoccupied during nights, weekends, and breaks by using the EMS to control the building temperature
  • Lighting Sensors - Motion sensors, light sensors, and timers are used on lighting systems throughout campus to ensure that lights are only one when needed
  • Steam Line Upgrades- The campus steam lines are being upgraded to increase efficiency
  • Cogeneration - Cogeneration is a highly efficient form of energy conversion that can achieve primary energy savings of approximately 40% by compared to the separate purchase of electricity and a gas boiler for onsite heating
  • Building Envelop Upgrades - As we replace roofs, windows, doors, etc. we install products with higher insulation values and greater efficiency
