Wednesday, August 18, 2021 to Thursday, October 7, 2021

Published as a limited edition by the CODEX Foundation in broadside format as part of the global Extraction intervention, the prints in the portfolio feature twenty-six poems and lyrical texts addressing themes of nature and its irresponsible destruction. Writers and artists include Margaret Atwood, Rick Bass, Wendell Berry, Joy Harjo, Kazuaki Tanahashi, and Jan Zwicky, among others. “By Extraction, the organizers refer to the industrial procedure of opening up the earth to remove and make use of what minerals ancient geological activity left behind. The great gashes made by strip mining, by quarries, by all manner of digging, are never healed, and the damage to the planet is brutal. The burning of coal, the use of trace elements for our digital endeavors, the drilling for oil, the plastic industry: all these represent mankind as an inventive species, but which is also sawing off the limb upon which it stands” (Juan Pascoe, Words on the Edge: A Review).
