    Laurentians Inspire: Alaska Boat Captain Casts a Net on Sustainability

    This summer Jessica Normandeau ’15 set sail on her newest business venture: captain of a 32-foot vessel in Bristol Bay, Alaska. With grueling 18-hour workdays and a lot of creative problem solving, she’s part of a small percentage of women sustainably harvesting fish from the world’s largest, completely wild, sockeye salmon run.

    The summer after graduating in 2020, Lucy Hochschartner was driving home from her part-time job at Chipotle when she first got the idea for On the Level, a website and nonprofit organization using technology to help people join the climate movement—empowering them to take actions that align with their interests, skills, and location.

    Laurentians Inspire: Michael Petroni '12

    Michael Petroni '12, a Ph.D. candidate at the SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry (ESF), lead a team of researchers on a study that links levels of Hazardous Air Pollutants to COVID-19 mortality rates. It has the potential to inform pollution standards and protect vulnerable populations across the country.
