University Chorus Accepting New Members
St. Lawrence’s University Chorus and the Potsdam Community Chorus will join forces this fall to present a concert in tribute to a great moving force in American choral music, Alice Parker. The new combined choir is seeking new singers from around the North Country. Community members as well as students from the four area colleges – St. Lawrence, SUNY Canton, Clarkson University and SUNY Potsdam – are welcome to join.
Rehearsals will be held Tuesday evenings from 6:45 to 9:15 p.m. Contact either Barry Torres (firstname.lastname@example.org or 315-229-5171) or Robin Duncan (email@example.com) for more membership information. Or just show up to the first rehearsal on Tuesday, Sept. 3, in Griffiths Arts Center, Room 15, on the St. Lawrence University campus.
Alice Parker began her long and illustrious career as the principle arranger for the world famous Robert Shaw Chorale and has gone on to arrange and compose over 500 works. The combined chorus will sing many of her well-loved Shaw arrangements of spirituals, folks songs, hymns and songs of the church.
The Alice Parker tribute concerts will take place on Saturday, Nov. 9 at 8 p.m. in Gunnison Memorial Chapel at St. Lawrence and Sunday, Nov. 10 at 3 p.m. at a location to be determined in Potsdam. The program will also include original compositions, including a scene from one of her operas, The Family Reunion.
University Chorus and the Potsdam Community Chorus will also sing at the annual Candlelight Services at St. Lawrence University on Wednesday, Dec.11.
