Sociology Professor Featured on 'Academic Minute'

Stephen Barnard, assistant professor of sociology, who is studying the way journalists use social media, was featured on WAMC's Academic Minute.

His research and teaching interests focus on the sociology of new media, culture, and communication. Barnard began research the use of Twitter by journalists in 2009 and found that journalists were disproportionately represented on the social media platform. He identified in his research eight journalistic practices on Twitter and something he calls the "elements of practice," or using Twitter like a modern day Rolodex.

Barnard earned his Ph.D. in sociology at the University of Missouri in 2012. Before joining the faculty at St. Lawrence, he held two interdisciplinary postdoctoral positions, one with the University of Denver’s Department of Media, Film, and Journalism Studies from 2013-14 and another with the School of Journalism and Peace Studies Program at the University of Missouri from 2012-13.
