Paul Meyers Trio to Perform

St. Lawrence University will welcome the Paul Meyers Trio at 8 p.m. on on Tuesday, Oct. 29, in Launders Underground, Noble Center, room 001. The event is free and open to the public.

For more than 10 years jazz, guitarist Paul Meyers has led the remarkable group World on a String, a Brazilian/Latin/Jazz project with a critically acclaimed CD on the Miles High label and numerous performances in New York City clubs and concert stages all over the Northeast.

“The repertoire is of my original compositions and arrangements, using a core of great players/improvisers to perform music that fuses the jazz tradition with Brazilian & Latin and beyond,” Meyers says. “It’s my own version of world music, but all with a swinging, grooving foundation.”

Meyers has performed and/or recorded with an ever-growing list of jazz greats such as Geri Allen, Kenny Barron, Ron Carter, Ray Drummond, Eliane Elias, Clare Fischer, Sonny Fortune, Eddie Gomez, Annie Ross, Marc Johnson, Wynton Marsalis, George Mraz, Rufus Reid, David Sanchez and Kenny Werner. He's also toured for years with two of the greatest jazz singers ever—Jon Hendricks since 1993, and Andy Bey from 1997 to 2008. "A virtuoso guitarist and improviser [who brings] his own voice to each and every melody and solo he performs...his lines are delivered with a hard driving sense of groove that only helps to accentuate his melodic and harmonic vocabulary” (Matthew Warnock, Just Jazz Guitar).

Leo Traversa (electric bass) is a highly proficient and versatile. The European press has called him “perfect in technique and brilliant in providing instrumental background” and a “master of the 5-string bass.” He has performed and recorded with a wide range of internationally known artists, including Tania Maria, Eliane Elias, both Randy and Michael Brecker, and Milton Nascimento.

Vanderlei Pereira (drums & percussion) is a master musician who combines a prodigious knowledge of Brazilian and Afro-Cuban rhythms with impeccable technique and a distinctive touch. He brings a unique palette to all the music he's involved in, keeping him in high demand. Pereira has appeared and recorded with Toots Thielemans, Airto Moreira, Flora Purim, Tito Puente, Claudio Roditi, and many more.
