History Prof. Quoted as U.S. Weighs Sanctions on Turkey
Howard Eissenstat, associate professor of history and Turkish affairs expert, was interviewed by Al-Monitor as Congress and the U.S. State Department discuss imposing sanctions on Turkey after the detention of US consular staff and US citizens.
Eissenstat told Al-Monitor, “At the core, (Turkey's President) Erdogan believes the US wants to overturn him, which means he is likely to see sanctions in that light. Moreover, Turkey is far less dependent on the US than it is on Germany and the European Union.”
Eissenstat is a nonresident senior nonresident fellow with the Project on Middle East Democracy think tank, or POMED.
He was also featured prominently in recent episode of the PBS series Great Decisions, titled "Turkey: A Partner in Crisis."
