Global Studies Prof. To Deliver Lecture at Alma Mater
John Collins, professor of global studies, will deliver a public lecture at the University of Minnesota as part of its Alumni Lecture Series organized by the Interdisciplinary Center for the Study of Global Change (ICGC).
Collins will deliver his lecture, titled “Ideological Struggle and the News: Patterns, Palestine, Praxis,” which will draw on his work as a scholar of the Palestinian liberation struggle. His lecture will address the continuing relevance of critical frameworks that emphasize the ideological function of what has traditionally been called “mainstream” news coverage in the United States. Collins will use examples of current U.S. media coverage of global issues to reveal the limitations of the “fake news” discourse; the need for renewed efforts to build an anti-imperialist approach to critical media literacy; and, the continuing importance of supporting grassroots journalism projects that are responsive to the needs of the global majority.
Collins will also lead a graduate seminar on “Scholarship and Public Responsibility” for the ICGC’s graduate minor program in Development Studies and Social Change.
