Geology Student Wins National Poster Award

Geology major Lukas Harvey ’18 of Castleton, Vermont, was awarded the 2017 Austin A. Sartin Best Poster Award by the Sigma Gamma Epsilon National Honor Society.

Luke’s presentation was ranked out of 64 qualifying undergraduate posters by a panel of geology professors at the annual meeting of the Geological Society of America (GSA) held Oct. 22 to 25 in Seattle.

His study, titled “Facies, depositional environments and sea-level trends within the Upper Ordovician Stony Mountain Formation, Western North Dakota,” was conducted this summer and supported by the Dr. J. Mark Erickson Geology University Fellowship under the mentorship of Associate Professor of Geology Antun Husinec.

This year’s GSA meeting had 7,100 attendees from 54 countries, 2,600 of whom were graduate and undergraduate students. St. Lawrence University was represented by 60 poster or oral presentations by its alumni, faculty and six of its current students.
