Dean's Op-Ed Featured in 'University Business'
Karl Schonberg, vice president of the University and dean for academic affairs, wrote an opinion article that was featured in the March edition of University Business magazine.
His article, titled "Liberal Education Offers Antidote to Divisiveness," discusses the idea that open-mindedness has steered American history through previous crises, including the American Civil War.
Schonberg, a professor of government with Ph.D. in international relations, argues that a liberal arts education was meant to benefit not just the individual, but also the whole of society by teaching the methods of evidence-based inquiry and argumentation.
"By providing a model for the rigorous exchange of ideas," he writes, "liberal arts colleges were created to be what they remain today—the incubators of democratic citizenship and the training grounds for civic discourse."
