Biology Professor's Study Featured in Local Newspaper

Associate Professor of Biology Susan Willson's study into the use of colorful collars to prevent cats from sneaking up on songbirds received front-page treatment in the Watertown Daily Times.

Willson is looking for 50 outdoor cats to participate in an eight-week study aimed at saving backyard birds from household cats. Her study involves having cats wear brightly-colored collar covers that have been shown to help keep feathered friends away from felines. The fabric collars are placed over breakaway collars.

A similar study by Willson was published in the January 2015 edition of Global Ecology and Conservation, which received widespread national attention from MTV News to The Atlantic.

She is running a concurrent study with the Florida Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit of the U.S. Geological Survey on new study of the collar's effectiveness.
