Arabic Studies Students Video Conference with Film Director

Students currently enrolled in Arabic 104, intermediate Arabic with Director of the Language Resource Center Gisele El Khoury, took part in a video conference with documentary film director Julia Meltzer.

Meltzer directed “The Light of Her Eyes.” It’s a film about Houda al-Habash, a conservative Muslim preacher, who founded a Qur’an school for girls in Damascus, Syria, 30 years ago. Each summer, her female students immerse themselves in a rigorous study of Islam, which is a surprising cultural as women claim their space within the mosque.

Shot right before the uprising in Syria erupted, the film offers an extraordinary portrait of a leader who challenges the women of her community to live according to Islam, without giving up their dreams.

Meltzer answered questions for nearly an hour by St. Lawrence students who are focusing on the idea behind the documentary, the problems that she faced while shooting it, and her upcoming projects.
