Techniques of Songwriting
Professor of English Sarah Gates and composer Paul Siskind will offer a course on songwriting for spring 2020!
MUS 3019. Techniques of Songwriting. This course introduces the basics of writing songs. We will listen to and analyze a variety of songs, with an ear toward becoming better songwriters ourselves. Students will be assigned exercises that address both musical and verbal dimensions of song, including melody, harmony, rhythm, lyrics, and form. Students will share their songs in class (in live performance and/or in recordings) for group discussion, with the goal of revising and developing them for a collection of polished work. No experience in songwriting is necessary; however, having some ability to sing or play an instrument will be helpful. Fulfills ARTS Distribution (2013 curriculum). Also offered as ENG 3051.
