Dr Brezault co-organized and presented a panel at the Modern Language Association
Dr Brezault co-organized and presented a panel at the Modern Language Association on January 6th with scholars Marianne Hirsch (Columbia University), Erica Johnson (Pace University) and Charles Forsdick (University of Liverpool) entitled: “Mobilizing Memory”
Dr Brezault talked about issues of memorialization in Rwanda in two recent artistic projects: a play by Senegalese writer Felwine Sarr Sur la barrière (On the Road blocks - 2015) and the mural project by South African artist, Bruce Clarke, “Upright Men” (2014). Both projects question the government’s narrative and build an immaterial “lieu de memoire” (Nora) that cannot be censored. This paper questions the importance of transcultural contact zones and postmemory work.
